The short version: GIPHY, Tenor, the GIF buttons built into Instagram Stories, WhatsApp, iMessage and keyboard apps, plus Wikimedia Commons, are where you get free GIFs in 2026. They're free to share in chats and Stories, but a GIF cut from a film or TV show isn't cleared for your ads or your website just because it was free to find.
Most people looking for free GIFs want one of two things: the perfect reaction for a chat, or a little movement for a social post or email. The first is easy. The second needs a bit more thought, because what's fine in a group chat can be a problem on a brand account.
Six places people find GIFs
In no particular order:
- GIPHY: best for the biggest searchable library, with apps for iMessage and sharing to other platforms.
- Tenor: best for GIFs inside many phone keyboards and messaging apps.
- Instagram Stories GIF button: best for adding animated stickers to a Story without leaving the app.
- WhatsApp GIF search: best for reactions in chats, fed by more than one GIF provider.
- iMessage: best for iPhone users who want GIFs straight from the message bar.
- Wikimedia Commons: best for animated diagrams and educational GIFs with a clear licence on each file.
GIF libraries and buttons side by side
| Source | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| GIPHY | Biggest library | Many GIFs are clips of films and shows |
| Tenor | Keyboard GIFs | Same reuse question as any reaction GIF |
| Instagram Stories | Story stickers | Only inside Stories |
| Chat reactions | Results come from several providers | |
| iMessage | iPhone chats | Needs the GIPHY app added for its library |
| Wikimedia Commons | Educational animations | Each file has its own licence |
Features move around in these apps, so check them before you rely on a workflow.
Getting GIFs into iMessage and Instagram Stories
GIPHY's help centre covers the common routes. In iMessage, open a text, tap the App Store icon below the text bar, search for GIPHY and open or download the app, then toggle between GIFs, Stickers and Text and tap to share. GIPHY notes this works on devices running iOS 10 or higher. Stickers can be dropped on top of images and texts, and you can use two fingers to resize them before you let go.
For Instagram, GIPHY's guide is short: from your Story, tap Create, scroll to the GIF button and search. If you want to keep favourites, GIPHY lets you heart a GIF, but you need to be signed in to your GIPHY account for Favorites to work.
If you want GIFs straight from a chat, my guides on sending a GIF on WhatsApp and posting a GIF on Instagram walk through every tap.
WhatsApp shows different GIFs, and reaction GIFs aren't ad-safe
Here's the WhatsApp quirk nobody mentions. GIPHY's own help page says WhatsApp uses multiple GIF providers, so not every user sees the same results, and only GIFs from approved upgraded GIPHY channels can appear in WhatsApp at all. If a brand GIF you made on GIPHY isn't showing up in WhatsApp, that's why.
The bigger catch is reuse. A huge share of reaction GIFs are moments from films, TV shows and sports. Finding them free in a search bar doesn't mean the studio has licensed them for your ad, your sales page or a product. For anything commercial, make your own GIF or use a file whose licence you can read, like a public domain or Creative Commons GIF on Wikimedia Commons, where the information page lists the licence and any credit it needs.
Using GIFs on a brand account
- Use the built-in GIF buttons for Stories and chats, where sharing is what the feature is for.
- For posts, emails and ads, make your own GIF from your own footage or graphics.
- If you use a found GIF, open its source page and check who owns it.
- Prefer files with a stated licence, and add credit if the licence asks for it.
- Keep GIFs short and light so they load quickly in email and on mobile.
Getting your own GIFs into the search results
The free libraries are also a distribution channel. GIPHY's help centre says anyone creating original, non-commercial content can apply to become a GIPHY Creator, and a channel needs at least five original uploads before you apply, with no explicit content. Brands go a different way: GIPHY points them to its upgraded channel application, which is also the only route for GIFs to appear inside WhatsApp. Once your GIFs are searchable, people can drop them into their own chats and Stories, which is reach you'd never get from a static post.
Keep the files short, give them clear tags people would search for, and make each one useful on its own: a thank you, a we're open, a new drop. Those everyday moments are what people reach for in a chat.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Borrow for chats, make your own for marketing
Free reaction GIFs are perfect for conversation. They're the wrong tool for brand content, where you want something that's yours. Making one is easier than it sounds: my guide on making a GIF in Canva takes a few minutes, and if you'd rather generate one, see where to make AI GIFs for free.
My rule of thumb: borrow GIFs for chats, make your own for marketing. It keeps the fun and loses the risk.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I get free GIFs?
GIPHY and Tenor have the largest free libraries, and the GIF buttons inside Instagram Stories, WhatsApp, iMessage and phone keyboards let you search and share them without leaving the app.
How do I get GIPHY in iMessage?
Open a text message, tap the App Store icon below the text bar, search for GIPHY and open or download the app. GIPHY says this works on iOS 10 or higher.
Why can't I find a GIPHY GIF in WhatsApp?
GIPHY says WhatsApp uses multiple GIF providers, so not every user sees the same results, and only GIFs from approved upgraded GIPHY channels can appear in WhatsApp.
Can I use free GIFs in ads?
Be careful. Many reaction GIFs are clips from films and TV shows that haven't been licensed for advertising. For ads, make your own GIF or use a file with a stated licence.
Do I need a GIPHY account?
Not to search and share. You do need to be signed in to use GIPHY Favorites.
