Best Crypto Tax Software (2026): 10 Tools Compared

The best crypto tax software is the one that can import every wallet and exchange you've used and produce the reports your tax return needs. Many let you preview gains free before you buy a report. This page lists ten tools in no particular order, then shows how to choose one. It isn't tax advice.

The hard part of crypto tax isn't the maths. It's finding every transaction: the exchange you used once years ago, the wallet you bridged from, the staking rewards that dripped in every week. Software can only report what it can see, so coverage of your wallets and exchanges matters more than anything else on the feature list.

Below are ten crypto tax tools in no particular order, listed alphabetically: free trackers that let you preview gains, report-based tools you buy per tax year, and services with accountants who'll file for you. Each description comes from the tool's own website, re-checked today. I'm not a tax adviser, so treat this as a guide to what to check, and take the final questions to an accountant who knows crypto.

Ten crypto tax tools compared

Yes in the free plan column means the tool's own site describes a free plan or free tier, usually tracking or a gains preview, with full tax reports often on a fuller plan. No means you'll choose a plan from the start.

The yes or no question on every US tax return

For US taxpayers, the IRS digital assets page says you must answer Yes or No to the digital assets question on federal income tax returns, including Form 1040. If you had digital asset transactions, you must report them whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss, and you need to keep records of them.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Two things follow. First, a small loss or a little-used exchange still belongs in your records, so don't skip the account you barely touched. Second, the records matter as much as the report: pick software that lets you export the full transaction history, not just the final summary. Outside the US, your own tax authority's rules apply, which is why country-specific reports are worth checking. Your accountant can tell you exactly what your return needs.

Getting your crypto tax report right in six steps

  1. List every exchange, wallet and app you've used, including closed accounts.
  2. Connect each one by read-only API key or public wallet address, or download a CSV where that's the only option.
  3. Look for missing transactions: transfers that show up as sells, or coins with no purchase history.
  4. Label staking, airdrops and transfers between your own wallets correctly.
  5. Preview your gains and losses before buying any report, so you know the tool sees everything.
  6. Export the reports and the full transaction history, and share both with your accountant.

Free preview, report or full filing service?

  • Free tracking and previews: good for checking the tool reads your wallets before you commit.
  • Report-based tools: you buy a report for the tax year, usually sized by how many transactions you made.
  • Filing services: an in-house team prepares and files the return, which helps active traders with messy histories.
  • Country-specific reports: if you're outside the US, check the tool produces a report for your own tax authority.

Keeping your wallets safe while you connect them

Crypto tax tools only ever need read-only access. You connect an exchange with a read-only API key, or a wallet by its public address. If any tool, email or so-called support agent asks for your seed phrase or private key, stop: no legitimate tax software needs it. My explainer on why you never share your recovery words covers this, and if you're unsure how yield or swaps fit in, decentralised finance explained simply is a good grounding before you talk to an accountant.

If you're weighing up whether to file yourself at all, here's when it makes sense to hire a CPA.

My plain advice on crypto tax software

Use the free tracking or preview stage as your test. Connect everything, and only buy a report once the tool shows every wallet and exchange you've used with no obvious gaps. If you've got a handful of trades on one exchange, a simple tool with a free tier may be all you need. If you've been active in DeFi, staking or NFTs, put coverage of those first.

And don't treat the software's output as the final word. Export the full history, keep it with your records, and have an accountant who understands crypto review it before you file. That's the safest way to answer that yes or no question with confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need crypto tax software?

Not always. A few trades on one exchange may be manageable by hand, but once you've used several wallets, exchanges or DeFi apps, software saves hours and reduces missed transactions.

Do I need to report crypto if I made a loss?

The IRS says digital asset transactions must be reported whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss. Ask your accountant how this applies to you.

Is there free crypto tax software?

Several tools offer free portfolio tracking or a free gains preview, and one or two offer free reports up to a small trade limit.

Is it safe to connect my exchange to crypto tax software?

Use read-only API keys and public wallet addresses only. Never share a seed phrase or private key with any tax tool.

Can crypto tax software file my return?

Some services include a team of CPAs who'll file for you. Most tools produce reports that you or your accountant import into tax software.

What if a transaction is missing?

Check whether the exchange or wallet is connected, import a CSV if needed, and fix transfers between your own wallets so they aren't treated as sales.
