To delete a UPI ID in Google Pay, tap your photo, then Bank account, choose the account, open Manage UPI IDs, tap the three dots next to the ID and select Delete. If you have live AutoPay mandates on it, cancel those first or the delete will fail.
Deleting a UPI ID doesn't close your bank account. It only removes that payment address. You can keep other IDs on the same account, or create a new one later.
Delete a UPI ID in Google Pay
- Open Google Pay.
- Tap your profile photo at the top right.
- Under Payment methods, tap Bank account.
- Tap the bank account the ID belongs to.
- Select Manage UPI IDs.
- Tap the three dots next to the UPI ID you want to remove.
- Select Delete.
Google's help page describes these steps. In PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and bank apps, the option sits in the same kind of place: your profile, then the UPI ID or bank account settings. If the wording differs, search the app's settings for UPI ID.
Why the delete keeps failing
This is the step everyone misses. Google's help pages say you need to revoke any live mandates before you delete a UPI ID or close your Google Pay account. A gym membership, an OTT subscription or a mutual fund SIP set up on UPI AutoPay all count.
- Open your profile and tap AutoPay.
- In the Live tab, open each mandate.
- Tap Cancel autopay and enter your UPI PIN.
- Go back to Manage UPI IDs and delete the ID.
Loan mandates can't be cancelled in Google Pay, so you'll need the lender for those. If you also use UPI Lite, Google says you have to unlink it, along with any autopay, before you can remove the bank account itself.
Delete the ID, remove the account, or block UPI?
| You want to | Do this | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stop using one payment address | Delete the UPI ID | Other IDs and the account still work |
| Stop using a bank account in the app | Remove the bank account | All IDs on it stop working in that app |
| Stop all UPI on the account | Ask your bank to block UPI | No UPI app can use the account |
| Stop using the app entirely | Revoke mandates, then close the account in the app | Your bank account stays open |
To remove a bank account from Google Pay
Google's steps are: open Google Pay, tap your photo, then Bank account, tap the account, then More and Remove account. Clear any active AutoPay and UPI Lite on it first. Removing the account takes every UPI ID on it out of that app.
Lost phone? Don't fiddle with IDs, block UPI
If your phone is lost or stolen, deleting IDs isn't the priority. Call your bank straight away and ask them to block UPI on your account, and ask your mobile operator to block the SIM. Your bank can stop UPI on the account no matter which apps are on the missing phone. Once you've got a new SIM with the same number, you can set UPI up again.
Can you get a deleted UPI ID back?
Sometimes. Google says that to restore an old UPI ID on Google Pay, you need the same phone number, device, bank account and Google Account. If any of those changed, you can't retrieve the same ID and you'll get a new one instead. So if people pay you on a particular ID, think twice before deleting it.
Too many UPI IDs: is it a problem?
Not really. Having a few IDs on one account isn't a security risk in itself, because they all need your UPI PIN to send anything. Google even creates extra IDs on purpose so payments can take another route when one partner bank's server is down. The reason to delete one is usually tidiness: an old ID you gave to a business you no longer use, or an ID from an app you've uninstalled.
What does deserve attention is an app you no longer use that still has your bank account linked. If you've stopped using a UPI app, go into it once, revoke any mandates, remove the bank account, and only then uninstall it. Uninstalling the app alone may leave the account registered, so it's cleaner to remove it from inside the app first.

Deleting UPI from an app you've stopped using
- Open the old app and sign in.
- Check AutoPay or Mandates and cancel anything still live.
- If it has a UPI Lite balance, delete UPI Lite so the balance goes back to your bank.
- Remove the bank account, or use the app's option to deregister or close the account.
- Uninstall the app.
Before you delete: a quick checklist
- Tell anyone who pays you regularly which ID to use instead.
- Update the UPI ID in any earning app or freelance platform that pays you.
- Cancel or move live AutoPay mandates.
- Replace any printed QR code linked to the old ID.
That second point catches people out. If a payout app still has the old ID saved, the next withdrawal can fail or get stuck. My guide to safe Paytm cash-out apps covers updating payout details.
Keep a short note of which UPI IDs you've kept and which apps they live in. It sounds fussy, but when a client or an earning app asks for your UPI ID a year from now, you'll know exactly which one to give and where its payment alerts will appear.
My take
Deleting a spare UPI ID is a sensible tidy-up, especially if you've collected a few from different apps over the years. Do the AutoPay clean-up first and it takes a minute. And if you're deleting because you think someone else has access, go further: reset your UPI PIN, check your recent payments, and call your bank. My earning app safety checklist lists the other warning signs worth checking.
Frequently asked questions
Will deleting my UPI ID close my bank account?
No. Only that payment address stops working. Your bank account stays open.
Why can't I delete my UPI ID?
You probably have a live AutoPay mandate on it. Google Pay says you must revoke live mandates before deleting a UPI ID.
Can I restore a deleted UPI ID?
On Google Pay, only with the same phone number, device, bank account and Google Account.
How do I block UPI if my phone is stolen?
Call your bank and ask them to block UPI on the account, and ask your mobile operator to block the SIM.
