To make a pet portrait in ChatGPT, upload a clear photo of your dog or cat and ask for the style you want, such as an oil painting or watercolour, while keeping your pet's markings, eye colour and ear shape exactly the same. Image creation and editing work on every ChatGPT plan. Ask for one change at a time until it looks like your pet.
A pet portrait only works if it looks like your pet, not just a dog of the same breed. That's the part AI gets wrong when the prompt is vague. The prompts below all start by telling ChatGPT what must stay the same, then what style to add.
The line that keeps it looking like your pet
Copy this prompt
Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's exact markings, fur colours, eye colour, ear shape and face shape. Don't change the breed or add markings that aren't there.
Add that to the start of every portrait prompt below. If you skip it, ChatGPT tends to tidy up your pet into a 'perfect' version of the breed, and the scruffy ear or odd patch you love disappears.
Pick the right photo first
- Daylight, no flash, so the fur colours are true.
- Your pet's face sharp and roughly facing the camera.
- Eyes visible, ideally with a little light in them.
- Nothing covering the face, such as a toy or a hand.
One good photo beats five blurry ones. ChatGPT can also take a sketch on the phone app (type @ and choose Sketch) if you want to suggest a pose.

Holiday card

Use my uploaded photo. Keep my pet's face and markings exactly the same. Put my pet in a cosy winter scene by a fireplace wearing a knitted scarf, warm light, room at the top for the words "Season's Greetings".
Memorial portraits
If you're making a portrait of a pet who's died, keep it simple and gentle. A soft, recognisable portrait usually means more than a dramatic scene.

Sizes for printing and sharing
| Use | Ask for |
|---|---|
| Framed print | Portrait shape |
| Phone wallpaper | 9:16 |
| Instagram post | 4:5 |
| Mug or square frame | Square |
OpenAI says you can pick any aspect ratio with the picker or by writing it in the prompt. For a print, open the finished image, choose Save, and check it's sharp at the size you want before you order.
Which style suits which pet
| Your pet | Styles that tend to work |
|---|---|
| Strong markings, like a tabby or a spotted dog | Oil painting or watercolour, where the pattern carries the picture |
| Fluffy, long fur | Charcoal or oil, which show texture well |
| Plain single colour coat | Cartoon or royal portrait, where the character does the work |
| Older pet with a grey muzzle | Soft watercolour, and ask ChatGPT to keep the grey |
These are my own rules of thumb from the way these styles treat fur and colour, not a rule from OpenAI, so try two styles and compare.
Fixing a portrait that doesn't look right
| Problem | What to type |
|---|---|
| Wrong markings | Put the white patch back on the left side of the face, exactly as in the photo |
| Eyes wrong colour | Make the eyes the same amber colour as in my photo |
| Looks like a different dog | Keep the face shape and ear shape exactly as in my photo |
| Too smooth | Keep the fur texture scruffy and natural |
OpenAI's help page notes that when you use the editor's Select tool, highlights aren't always precise and edits may spread past the area, so describe the fix in words as well.

My advice
Make three versions from the same photo, one painted, one playful, one simple, and see which one makes you smile. That's the one to print. And keep the original photo next to it while you edit; comparing them side by side is the fastest way to spot what's drifted.
