There's no single Remove button for a Facebook profile picture. To remove one, you delete that photo from your Profile pictures album: open your profile, go to Photos, then Albums, open Profile pictures, open the photo, choose Delete photo and confirm. Do that with your current picture and your profile shows a blank default image until you add a new one.
The same steps work for old profile pictures, which is where most people's worries sit. Every picture you've ever used is kept in that album, including temporary ones that have already expired, so it's worth a look even if you're happy with the photo you use today.
The detail that changes the plan: Facebook's Help Centre says your current profile picture is always public. You can't hide it while it's in use, you can only delete it or replace it. Old profile pictures are different: you can keep them but change who sees each one.
Delete or hide? Pick the right fix
| What you want | What to do | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| No profile picture at all | Delete your current picture from the Profile pictures album | Your profile shows a blank default image until you add one |
| A different picture | Upload a new one with the camera icon | The old one moves into the album and stays there |
| Old pictures gone for good | Delete each one from the album | That photo is removed from Facebook |
| Old pictures kept but hidden | Change each photo's audience to Only me or Friends | You still have it, fewer people see it |
If you only want a fresh look, replacing is quicker than deleting. If you want something off the internet, delete it.
Steps on a computer
These come straight from Facebook's Help Centre:
- Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook, then click your name to go to your profile.
- Click Photos, then click Albums.
- Select the Profile pictures album.
- Click Edit in the top right of the photo you want to delete and select Delete photo.
- Click Delete to confirm.
Steps in the Facebook app
- Open your profile and tap Photos.
- Tap Albums, then open Profile pictures.
- Open the photo you want to remove.
- Tap the three dots in the corner of the photo.
- Tap the delete option and confirm.
App menus change from version to version. If a label looks different on your phone, search Facebook's settings or the help menu for the words profile pictures.
Clearing out old profile pictures
Scroll through the Profile pictures album from the oldest photo up. For each one, decide: keep it public, keep it private, or delete it. Changing the audience is the gentle option. Facebook lets you adjust the privacy setting for any photo you've used as a profile picture in the past, so a holiday snap from years ago can be set to Only me without losing it.
Temporary profile pictures need a mention here. Facebook says that when a temporary picture expires, it stays visible in your Profile pictures album. People often think it vanished when it switched back. It didn't, so give those a check too.
Before you press Delete
Deleting is final, so save anything you might want later. Open the photo and use the download option in its menu to keep a copy on your phone or computer. It takes seconds and it's the only way back if you change your mind.
It's also worth thinking about the comments and reactions on old profile pictures. Friends' kind words from a decade ago disappear along with the photo. If those matter to you, changing the audience to Only me keeps everything and still hides it from everyone else.
If the delete option isn't there
You can only delete photos you uploaded yourself. If the picture was posted by a friend and you're tagged in it, you won't see Delete photo. Instead you can remove the tag so it no longer links to your profile, and ask your friend to take the photo down. If it breaks Facebook's rules, report it from the photo's menu.
Using a work or family account someone else set up? The person who uploaded the photo is the one who can delete it, so ask them directly.

What deleting won't reach
Deleting a photo from the album removes that copy, but it can't touch copies that live somewhere else. Watch out for:
- The same photo posted separately. If you also shared it as a normal post or in another album, delete that copy as well.
- Stories. A photo shared to your Story is separate from your album. Here's how to delete a Facebook Story if it's still up.
- Cover photos. Those live in a separate Cover photos album with their own delete option.
- Other people's screenshots or downloads. Nothing on Facebook can pull back a copy someone saved before you deleted it.
- Search engines. A cached thumbnail can take a little while to drop out of search results after you delete the original.
If you need to change your header too, my guide on changing your Facebook cover photo covers the steps.
When someone else is using your photo
If you're removing your picture because someone copied it to a fake profile, deleting yours won't fix that. Report the fake account to Facebook from its profile using the three dots menu and the option to report it. Ask friends to report it too. Don't message the person behind it, and never pay anyone who offers to take it down for you.
My take
I'd rather see a clear, friendly photo than a blank circle, because a missing picture can make your account look fake to people you want to connect with. If privacy is what's bothering you, a better route is often a photo that's recognisable but not personal, such as you from a distance, in profile, or with your face partly turned.
Then lock down the rest. My step by step guide to making your Facebook profile picture private covers the audience settings for old photos and profile lock where it's offered.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove my profile picture on Facebook?
Go to your profile, open Photos, then Albums, then Profile pictures. Open the photo, choose Delete photo and confirm.
What shows on my profile after I delete my profile picture?
Your profile shows a blank default image until you upload a new picture.
Can I hide my current Facebook profile picture instead of deleting it?
No. Facebook says your current profile picture is always public. You can only replace it, delete it, or hide older ones.
Do expired temporary profile pictures get deleted?
No. Facebook says an expired temporary picture stays visible in your Profile pictures album, so delete it there if you want it gone.

No. Deleting only removes the copy on your account. Screenshots or downloads made earlier can't be recalled.
