How to Hide Your Instagram Story From Everyone (What Works and What Doesn't)

Instagram has no single "hide from everyone" switch for stories. The closest options are sharing to a Close Friends list with only one trusted person on it, selecting everyone under Hide story and live from, archiving the story straight after you post it, or deleting it. Making your account private hides stories from non-followers, but not from your followers.

Which one you need depends on why you're hiding it. If you want to keep a story for yourself, archive it. If you want a few people to see it, use Close Friends. If you want nobody to see it ever again, delete it.

The detail people miss: Instagram's Help Centre says stories you share publicly, including ones sitting in your archive, are used to improve AI at Meta unless you delete them from your archive or switch your account to private. Hiding a story from people doesn't change that. Deleting it or going private does.

The five options compared

OptionWho can still see your storyBest for
Close Friends with one personOnly the people on your listSharing with a tiny circle
Hide story and live from (select everyone)Anyone you didn't select, including new followersBlocking out your current audience
Archive straight after postingOnly you, in your archiveKeeping a story as a private memory
Delete the storyNo oneRemoving it for good
Private accountYour approved followersHiding from strangers, not followers

Option 1: Close Friends with only one person

This is the nearest thing to a private story. When you share to Close Friends, only the people on that list see it. Add one person you trust, such as your partner or a second account of your own, and your story is effectively hidden from everyone else.

  1. Tap Create at the top of Feed, or swipe right anywhere in Feed.
  2. Tap Story at the bottom and take or choose your photo or video.
  3. When you're ready, tap Close friends at the bottom instead of Your story.
  4. If you haven't set up a list yet, add just that one person to it first.

Two things to know. People on your Close Friends list know they're on it, because they see a green ring and a Close friends label. And no one can ask to be added, so nobody gets a notification that they've been left out.

Option 2: Hide story and live from, with everyone selected

Instagram lets you hide your story from specific people, and nothing stops you selecting every follower. It's slow if you have a lot of followers, but it works for the people you pick.

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu in the top right.
  2. Under Who can see your content, tap Story, live and location.
  3. Tap Hide story and live from.
  4. Select the people you want to hide your story from, then tap Back.

The weak spot: anyone who follows you after you do this isn't hidden until you add them. Hiding also isn't blocking. Instagram says hidden people can still see your profile and posts. If you only want to keep a few people out, my guide on how to hide your Instagram story from specific people walks through it in more detail.

If a menu name looks different on your phone, open your settings and search for the word "story"; Instagram renames these screens now and then.

Option 3: Archive the story the moment you post it

Archived stories can't be seen on Instagram unless you choose to share them again. Instagram lets you archive a story before its normal 24 hours are up, which takes it out of view right away.

  1. Share your story as normal.
  2. Open it and tap Options (the three dots).
  3. Tap Archive.

Make sure Save story to archive is switched on first, or there's nowhere for the story to go. You'll find it under your profile menu, then Your activity, then Archived, then Options and Settings. Bear in mind your story was live for the seconds before you archived it, so anyone quick may have caught it.

Option 4: Delete it

If you don't want the story anywhere, delete it. Open your story, tap Options (on iPhone, More), tap Delete, then confirm. If you shared it to Facebook too, you'll be asked whether to delete it from both. To remove a story already in your archive, open Your activity, then Archived, tap the story, then Options and Delete. Instagram notes that deleting from the archive also removes it from any highlights.

Option 5: Make your account private

A private account hides your stories from people who don't follow you, and Instagram says public stories can also turn up in Search, Explore and on the Instagram map. Going private stops that. It doesn't hide anything from your existing followers, though, so pair it with Close Friends if you want both.

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu in the top right.
  2. Under Who can see your content, tap Account privacy.
  3. Switch on Private account and confirm.

Business profiles can't go private. You'd need to switch back to a personal account first, and my guide on making a business account private on Instagram explains what you lose when you do. Accounts for people under 18 are private by default.

What doesn't work

  • Muting your followers. Muting stops you seeing their stories; it does nothing to who sees yours.
  • Posting late at night. Your story still sits there for 24 hours unless you archive or delete it.
  • Apps that promise invisible stories. Don't give any outside app your Instagram password. It's a fast way to lose your account.

My verdict

If you want a story nobody else sees, use Close Friends with one person you trust, or archive it as soon as it's up. If you want it gone for good, delete it, including from your archive. And if what's bothering you is a handful of people, hiding from those few is far simpler than hiding from everyone. Instagram keeps adding privacy controls, but for now these five are the ones that hold up.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a setting to hide my Instagram story from everyone?

No. Instagram doesn't have one switch for that. Use Close Friends with one person, hide it from everyone you select, archive it straight away or delete it.

Can I share an Instagram story with no one?

The closest you can get is a Close Friends list with only one trusted person, or archiving the story straight after posting so only you can see it.

Do people know when I hide my story from them?

Instagram's help page on hiding stories doesn't mention any alert being sent. The person simply stops seeing your stories.

Does a private account hide my story from followers?

No. A private account hides stories from people who don't follow you. Your approved followers can still see them.

Does hiding my story block someone?

No. Instagram says hiding your story is different from blocking. The person can still see your profile and posts.
