To use Magic Eraser in Canva, click the photo in your design, select Edit on the editor toolbar, then choose Magic Eraser under Tools. Brush over the object, click it, or pick Foreground, then select Erase and wait for Canva to fill the gap.
Magic Eraser is Canva's tool for wiping a stray coffee cup, a photobombing stranger or a distracting sign out of a photo, and filling the space so it looks like it was never there. It's AI-powered, so it's quick, but it works best when you understand the four ways of selecting what to remove. Here's how to use it from inside a design and from your Projects tab.
Erase an object inside a design
- Click the photo you want to clean up. This works on photos inside grids and frames too.
- Select Edit on the editor toolbar.
- Under Tools, select Magic Eraser.
- Choose how to select the object: Brush, Click, Foreground or Text.
- Select Erase and wait while Canva processes the photo.
- Not happy? Select Reset Edits. Happy? Use the back arrow beside Magic Eraser to return to your design.
The four selection modes compared
| Mode | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Brush | Paint over the object, with a size slider | Odd shapes, cables, small marks |
| Click | Select whole objects, several at once | A bin, a sign, a person in the background |
| Foreground | Selects the main subject | Removing the subject to leave the scene |
| Text | Selects text in the image | Shop signs, logos, number plates |
One quirk with Brush: Canva says that while you're in this mode, zooming in and undoing or redoing brush strokes won't work. So set the brush size before you start, paint carefully, and use Deselect to clear everything and start again if you overshoot.
Editing from Projects without opening a design
If you just want a clean photo to use later, you don't need a design open at all:
- From the homepage, go to Projects, then All projects, then Images.
- Hover over the photo, select More (the three dots), then Edit image.
- Under Tools, select Magic Eraser and erase as above.
- Select Save. Canva keeps the edited photo as a separate file in your Images tab and Uploads folder, so your original stays safe.
- Select Download if you want a copy on your device, or Create design to drop it into something new.
Before you save, press and hold Compare to flick between the edited and original versions. It's the quickest way to spot a smudge you'd otherwise miss.
When the object won't disappear
Sometimes you erase, wait, and the thing is still there, or a ghostly outline is left behind. Canva's tip is simple: erase a slightly larger area around the object. The AI needs a bit of surrounding background to work out what should fill the space, so brushing tight to the edge of a lamppost often leaves a shadow. Give it a margin.
Busy backgrounds are harder than plain ones. Removing a person from a beach usually works beautifully; removing them from a crowded market may leave the fill looking smeared. If that happens, try removing the object in two or three smaller passes rather than one big one.
Magic Eraser, Pixel Eraser or BG Remover?
Canva has three erasing tools that people mix up, and they do different jobs:
- Magic Eraser removes an object and fills the gap so the photo looks natural.
- Pixel Eraser (select the image, then Eraser, then Pixel Eraser) rubs out pixels by hand and can make areas transparent, with a Restore brush to undo bits.
- BG Remover cuts the whole background away and leaves the subject. Canva says it's included with its premium plans.
If you want a product on a transparent background for a sticker or a website, BG Remover is the right one. If you want the same photo minus one distraction, it's Magic Eraser.
Wiping text out of a photo
The Text option is the newest of the four and it's easy to overlook, because Canva only lists it when you use Magic Eraser from inside the editor, not from the Projects tab. It picks out lettering in the image itself, which is brilliant for a stock-style shot of your shop where an old opening hours sign or a supplier's logo is in view. Select it, check which words Canva has highlighted, and erase. If it misses a word, switch to Brush and paint over what's left. Then add your own text box on top if you want new wording in its place.

Using it honestly
A quick word, because Magic Eraser is so easy. Tidying up a cluttered background on your own product or team photo is fine. Removing things from a photo in a way that changes what it shows, such as a property listing, a before and after, or a review image, can mislead people. Keep edits to clean-ups, not changes to the facts. Magic Eraser is an AI feature too, so it counts towards your AI usage in Canva.
My verdict on Magic Eraser
For small businesses, it's one of Canva's most useful time savers. I'd use Click mode first, as it's fastest, switch to Brush for awkward shapes, and always erase a little wider than you think. Save edits as separate files so the original's always there. My Canva review goes through the other features worth knowing. And if you want the whole background gone rather than one object, here's my guide to removing a background in Canva.
