To make a collage in Canva, open a design, go to Elements, select Grids under Browse categories and add a grid. Drag photos from Uploads or Photos onto each grid space until they snap in, double-click to reposition them, then use Spacing on the toolbar to set the gaps.
A collage is the quickest way to show a lot in one image: a week of behind-the-scenes shots, the before and after of a client project, or a product range in one square post. Canva builds collages with two elements, grids and frames. Grids give you neat, ready-made layouts. Frames let you build freer, more playful arrangements with circles, arches and other shapes.
Make a photo collage with a grid
- Create a design at the size you need, such as an Instagram post or an A4 page.
- In the editor side panel, select Elements.
- Under Browse categories, select Grids and choose a layout with the right number of spaces.
- Click a grid space, then open Uploads for your own photos or Photos for Canva's library. If you can't see them, select Apps first.
- Drag each photo over a grid space until it snaps inside.
- Double-click a photo to resize it with the white corner handles or drag it to reposition, then select Done.
- Select the grid and choose Spacing on the toolbar to widen or close the gaps.
Grids versus frames for collage layouts
| Element | What it gives you | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Grids | Fixed, evenly arranged spaces | Tidy photo walls, before and after pairs, product sets |
| Frames | Single shapes you place anywhere | Scrapbook styles, overlapping shapes, mixed sizes |
| Grid plus frames | A structured base with a few accent shapes | Event recaps and mood boards |
Building a freer collage with frames
A frame is a placeholder that crops an image or video into a shape. To add one, go to Elements, select Frames under Browse categories, search for a shape such as circle or polaroid, and select it. Drag a photo over it until it snaps in. Repeat with different shapes and sizes, overlap them slightly, and you've got a scrapbook-style collage.
To swap a photo without dragging, right-click the frame and choose Replace (if it's empty) or Replace image (if it's full), then pick the new image from the side panel. Canva also mentions Smart Crop as a time saver for fitting photos inside a frame, and says some shapes you've already placed can be converted into frames.
Spacing, colour and gaps
Spacing is what makes a grid collage look designed rather than dumped. Select the grid, choose Spacing on the toolbar and drag the slider. No spacing gives an edge-to-edge photo wall; a little spacing on a coloured background feels more like a magazine page.
You don't have to fill every space with a photo. Select an empty grid space and use the colour tile on the editor toolbar to fill it with a brand colour, then put a short headline or your logo on top. A collage with one coloured block for text is far easier to read in a social feed than one crammed with nine photos.
The cropping catch in collage grids
Every grid crops your photos to fit each space, and they won't always crop where you want. A tall portrait in a wide grid space will lose the top of someone's head unless you fix it. That's why the double-click step matters: double-click each photo, drag it until the important part sits in the visible area, and resize with the corner handles if you need more of it. Check every space before you download.
Also note that Canva says only images and videos can go into frames. If you try to drop text or a graphic into one, it won't snap in. Place text on top as a separate element instead.
Video collages and clean-ups
Grids and frames take videos as well as photos, so you can make a moving collage for Reels or Stories. Drag a video from Videos or Uploads onto a grid space just as you would a photo, and download the finished design as an MP4.
If one photo in your collage has something distracting in the background, you don't need to leave Canva. Canva says Magic Eraser works on photos added to grids and frames: click the photo, select Edit, then Magic Eraser under Tools.

Sizing and downloading your collage
Pick the design size before you build, because a collage made for a square post won't crop neatly into a vertical story later. If you plan to post it in several places, build the square version first and copy it for the taller formats, then rearrange the grid by hand. For social media, download as a PNG for the sharpest result, or a JPG if file size matters. If the collage contains video, it goes out as an MP4.
Collage ideas for a small business
- Before and after in a two-space grid, with a small label on each side.
- Meet the team using circle frames on a brand-colour background.
- Customer photos in a four-space grid, with permission, as social proof.
- Event recap mixing one large photo with several smaller frames.
The short version from me
Start with a grid, keep it to four or six photos, and give it a little spacing. Fix every crop by hand and leave one space for a message. That's it. If you're also turning photos into video, my guide on making a slideshow on your iPhone is the next step, and my Canva review covers whether Canva's worth it for your business.
