To make a banner in Canva, search the Create tab for the banner type you need, such as a LinkedIn or YouTube banner, or set a Custom size in pixels or inches. Add your text and images, keep key words away from the edges, then download a PNG for the web or a print file for a vinyl banner.
Banner means two very different things, and Canva handles both. There's the digital kind: the wide strip across the top of your LinkedIn profile, YouTube channel, Facebook page or email newsletter. And there's the printed kind: a long vinyl sign for a market stall, shop front or event. The design steps overlap, but the sizes and the files you download are completely different, so start by deciding which one you're making.
Banner types and how to start each
| Banner | How to start it in Canva | Download as |
|---|---|---|
| Social profile or channel header | Search the Create tab for the platform's banner type | PNG |
| Website or email header | Custom size in px | PNG, or JPG if it's mainly a photo |
| Small printed banner | Custom size using inches, mm or cm | PDF Print |
| Large printed banner | Supported size, then scaled up (see below) | PNG at a larger scale, or as your printer advises |
Make a social media banner
- On the homepage, open the Create tab and search for the banner you need, such as LinkedIn banner or YouTube banner.
- Select the result and a blank design opens at that size.
- Add a background colour or photo, your logo, and one short line saying what you do.
- Keep your text towards the middle. Profile photos and buttons can cover the corners, and the visible area changes between phone and desktop.
- Select Share, then Download, and choose PNG for crisp text.
If you need the same banner across several platforms, Magic Resize can turn one design into multiple formats at once, using bundles. Canva lists it for Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education, Higher education, Nonprofits and Teams plans. Expect to tidy each version by hand, because a very wide banner and a squarer one rarely share a layout perfectly.
Set a custom banner size
For a website header, newsletter strip or anything without a preset, select Custom size on the homepage banner, choose your units, and enter the width and height. Canva's limits are a minimum of 40 x 40 px and a maximum of 8000 x 3125 px. If the boxes turn red, you've gone outside them.
The size limit catch with big printed banners
This is where printed banners get awkward. A long vinyl banner can easily be larger than Canva's maximum canvas, and Canva's own help page uses a large banner as its example of this problem. Its workaround keeps the shape right even though the canvas is smaller:
- In the Custom size fields, enter your target dimensions. They'll turn red if they're too big.
- Select the lock icon to lock the aspect ratio.
- Reduce the field that's over the limit, such as the width. Because the ratio is locked, the height changes in proportion.
- Design at that smaller size. The proportions match your real banner.
- When you download, choose PNG and use the size slider. Canva says you can download PNGs from 0.5 up to 3.125 times the design's size.
Talk to your printer before you start and ask exactly what file, size and resolution they want for a banner of your size. Canva notes that if you print outside Canva Print, you should check your provider's bleed requirements, as they may trim differently.
Designing for a long, thin shape
Wide banners punish clutter. People see them from the side of a road, across a hall or in a quick scroll, so I'd stick to three things: your name or logo, one line about what you offer, and one way to find you, like a web address. Put the most important words in the middle third, not at the ends, especially for printed banners with eyelets or ties at the corners. Use high-contrast colours, too. Dark text on a pale background, or white on a strong brand colour, reads from much further away than pastel on pastel.
Bleed and safe areas for print
For a printed banner that's trimmed, Canva adds 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) of bleed on every side and shows it when you turn on File, then Settings, then Show print bleed. Extend backgrounds to the dashed line and keep text inside the margins. Canva says bleed doesn't apply to products where the ink doesn't reach the edge, so ask your printer whether your banner needs it.
File sizes for web banners
A huge PNG header can slow your website or email down. When you download a PNG or JPG for a single page, Canva's Limit size option lets you set a maximum file size in KB. Canva lists file size limits, scale and quality options among the features on Canva Pro, Teams, Education and Nonprofits plans. On other plans, a JPG is usually smaller for photo-heavy banners, while PNG keeps text sharper.

What I'd do
For social banners, I'd use Canva's preset sizes and keep everything important in the centre. For printed ones, I'd ask the printer for their exact size and file requirements before designing a thing, then use the locked aspect ratio trick if it's bigger than Canva allows. See my review of Canva for the wider picture. If you're doing a YouTube banner, you'll probably want matching thumbnails too, so here's what size YouTube thumbnails should be.
