Best Screenwriting Software (2026): 10 Tools Compared

The best screenwriting software formats your pages to industry standard automatically, exports a clean PDF and works on the devices you write on. Choose by how you work: offline on a desktop, in the cloud with co-writers, or in plain text on Apple devices. Many have a free plan or demo with limits. Here are ten in no particular order.

A script gets judged in its first few pages, and a reader will notice wonky margins before they notice your dialogue. That's the whole job of screenwriting software: keep the formatting invisible so the story is all anyone sees.

Below you'll find ten screenwriting apps, alphabetical and in no particular order, from long-established names to small independent tools. Each description comes from the maker's own site, re-checked today. Where an app has a free option, I've said what the limit is, because a watermark on your PDF or a cap of a few pages changes how useful it'll be.

Screenwriting apps compared at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the maker describes a way to keep writing without buying, but the limits vary a lot: a capped number of scripts or projects, a watermark on printed and PDF pages, or only the first six pages free. Trial only means a time-limited trial.

How long a registered script stays registered

If you register scripts before sending them out, here's a date to put in your diary. The WGAW Registry, run by the Writers Guild of America West, says a registration is valid for five years and can be renewed for another five. Renewals are accepted up to three months before the term ends, with a three-month grace period afterwards, and when you register or renew you authorise the Guild to destroy the material once a term expires.

So a registration isn't for ever, and it won't renew itself. Keep a note of the date you registered each draft, set a reminder a few months before the five years are up, and keep your own dated copies of every version as well. Your software's version history and exports are your working record; the registry is the formal one.

Desktop, cloud or plain text

  • Desktop apps keep files on your computer and work without a connection, which suits writers who travel or like owning their files.
  • Cloud apps make co-writing and producer notes easy, because everyone's opening the same draft.
  • Plain-text Fountain apps store the script as simple text, so you can open it in almost any editor years from now.
  • All-in-one writing apps suit people who research, outline or write prose alongside their scripts.

Six checks before your first full draft

  1. Write a test scene with dialogue, action and a transition, then export it as a PDF.
  2. Look for a watermark or page limit on that PDF before you send it to anyone.
  3. Make sure you can export to the formats your co-writers or producers use.
  4. Try it on every device you write on, including your phone if you make notes on the go.
  5. Turn on backups or version history and find out where the files are stored.
  6. Bring one older script in, so you know your past work comes across cleanly.

Habits that slow scripts down

  • Fiddling with formatting by hand. Let the software handle margins and scene headings.
  • Rewriting page one for ever. Finish a rough draft before you polish.
  • Keeping every draft in one file. Save numbered versions so you can go back.
  • Sending a watermarked PDF. Check exports before a script leaves your hands.

Stuck for a starting point? These craft-based writing prompts make a handy warm-up, and if your scripts are for video or webinars rather than the screen, I've rounded up AI help for video and webinar scripts too.

Do you make screenwriting software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing where to write your script

If you write alone and mostly at a desk, start with a desktop or plain-text app and get used to exporting clean PDFs. If you co-write or take notes from producers, start in a cloud app with a free plan and only move up when you hit the project cap.

Whatever you pick, check the exported PDF before a script goes anywhere. A watermark or a missing page is the kind of small thing that makes a reader stop. And once you've got a finished short, my guide to the routes for selling a short film looks at what comes next.

Frequently asked questions

What software do screenwriters use?

Screenwriters use a mix of desktop, cloud and plain-text apps. What matters is clean industry formatting, reliable PDF export and a file format your collaborators can open.

Is there free screenwriting software?

Yes, with limits. Some apps have free plans capped by scripts or projects, some free demos watermark your pages, and one open source app is a free download on Mac.

Can I write a screenplay in a normal word processor?

You can, but you'll spend time fixing margins and scene headings by hand. Dedicated software does that formatting for you.

What is Fountain format?

Fountain is a plain-text way of writing scripts, so your screenplay stays readable in any text editor and still turns into a formatted script.

How long does a WGAW Registry registration last?

Five years, and it can be renewed for another five. Renewals open three months before expiry, with a three-month grace period.

Can two people write the same script at once?

Cloud screenwriting apps are built for that. Check whether the free plan lets collaborators edit or only read.
