How to See Your Views on Instagram (Posts, Reels, Stories)

To see your views on Instagram, open the photo, carousel or reel on your profile and tap View insights. Views is the first number, and for stories you open the story and swipe up. You need a public account, and posts and reels show counts, not the names of who viewed.

Instagram now reports Views on every type of content, from a single photo to a reel, which makes it easier to compare one with another. The number is there on your own posts in two taps. What trips people up is the difference between views and viewers, and the fact that a photo post never shows you names.

Check views on a photo or carousel post

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap the post you want to check.
  3. Tap View insights under the post.
  4. Read Views at the top, then scroll for interactions and profile activity.

Instagram's Help Centre defines post views as the number of times your content was displayed. Carousels use the same View insights button, so check them exactly the same way.

Check views on a reel

  1. Go to your profile and tap the Reels tab.
  2. Tap the reel.
  3. Tap View insights.

For reels, Instagram counts a view each time the reel starts to play or replay. You'll also see Watch time, Average watch time and Follows, which tell you far more about whether people stayed than the view count alone.

Check views on a story

Open your story while it's live and swipe up. You'll see the number of views and the usernames of the people who watched each photo or video. Instagram says only you can see this list, and you can still check it for up to 48 hours after posting by going to Menu, then Archive, opening the story and swiping up.

After that, the names go, but the numbers stay. Story insights remain available for up to two years even though the story itself expires after 24 hours. Find older ones by tapping View insights on your profile and scrolling to Top content based on engagement. If your story numbers look wrong, why your story views can show zero covers the usual causes.

Views across your whole account

  1. Go to your profile.
  2. Tap Professional dashboard on a professional account, or Your dashboard on a personal one. If it isn't there, tap More to open Settings and activity.
  3. Tap Views to open the detail.
  4. Use the dropdown to pick Last 7 days, Last 14 days, Last 30 days, Previous month or Last 90 days, or set your own dates.

By default you'll see the past 30 days. Instagram lets you look back across any range within the past 90 days for account-wide insights, while individual posts, reels and stories keep their own insights for up to two years.

Views, viewers and reach: what's the difference

MetricWhat Instagram countsUse it to
ViewsEvery time the content was shown or played, including repeats by the same personSee how much attention a post got in total
ViewersUnique accounts that saw it on screen at least onceSee how many different people you reached
InteractionsLikes, comments, saves and sharesSee whether people did something
Profile activityVisits, follows and taps on your profile after seeing itSee whether the post sent people to you

Here's the detail that explains odd-looking numbers. Instagram says views may include multiple views by the same accounts, while viewers counts each account once. So a reel with three times as many views as viewers isn't a glitch: some people looked more than once, which is usually a good sign. If you were used to Accounts reached, Viewers is the number to compare it with.

Who can see your view counts

Insights are private to you. Other people can't open your insights, and they can't see your story viewer list. What they might see is the public count on a post or reel, and you control that. Before sharing a post, tap Advanced settings and turn on Hide like and view counts on this post. You'll still see the numbers yourself.

You can also hide counts on other people's posts from your own feed, under Settings, then Like and share counts below What you see. That changes what you see, not what anyone else sees.

Can you see who viewed your post?

No, not for photo posts, carousels or reels. Instagram's insights for those give you totals for views and viewers, not a list of names. The only place Instagram shows the usernames of people who watched your content is your story viewer list, and only for up to 48 hours. Any app claiming to show who viewed your posts isn't using anything Instagram provides.

When you can't find View insights

What's happeningWhyWhat to do
No View insights button at allYour account is privateSwitch to public; Instagram says you need a public personal or professional account
Older numbers missing after going publicInsights may not cover the time the account was privateWait for new posts to build data
Lost insights after going privateA private account loses accessSwitch back to public within 90 days to regain past data
No audience breakdownToo few accounts reachedChoose a longer timeframe; demographics need over 100 accounts

Instagram also notes that Views is being introduced gradually, so labels can differ slightly between accounts for a while.

My plain advice on reading your views

Look at views, then look at what happened next. A photo with modest views but strong saves and profile activity is doing more for you than a reel with big views and nothing else. Compare posts of the same type over the same timeframe, rather than your best reel against your quietest photo.

And if a sudden drop has you worried, check one thing at a time before changing everything. why story views drop suddenly is a good place to start.
