Free People Search (2026): 9 Sites to Look Someone Up

A free people search site lets you look up a name, phone number or address and see public record details such as past addresses and possible relatives. The basic search is usually free, while full reports often sit behind an upgrade. Use them to reconnect or check a caller, never to screen a tenant or a job applicant.

Most people land on a people search site for an ordinary reason. An old friend has dropped off the radar, a number keeps ringing and you want to know who's calling, or you're about to meet someone from an online listing and want a quick sense check.

Below are nine sites that offer a free search, listed in no particular order and sorted alphabetically. Some show a surprising amount on the first screen, while others show a teaser and ask you to upgrade for the full record.

They all pull from public records and other data sources, so the same person can look quite different from one site to the next. A name that turns up nothing on one site can show a full address history on another.

Before you start, read the section on what these sites can't be used for. It's the part most people skip, and it's the part that can get you into trouble.

Free people search sites at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the site's own pages describe free access, Trial only means a time-limited trial, and No means neither is stated there. Free access often comes with limits, so check what's included before you rely on it.

The rule most people search users don't know

Here's the part that catches people out. People search sites are fine for finding an old classmate, but using one to decide whether to rent to someone, hire them or lend them money is a different matter. Those decisions fall under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which has rules on accuracy and on telling the person when a report counts against them.

The Federal Trade Commission's own press release on the TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate case says the companies violated that law by operating as consumer reporting agencies while marketing reports for employee and tenant screening. So if you're a landlord or an employer, use a screening company that follows those rules, not a free lookup.

How to get better results from a free search

  • Add a location: a city or state cuts a common name from hundreds of results to a handful.
  • Search the phone number too: numbers change less often than addresses, so they're a good cross-check.
  • Check two sites: each one pulls from different sources, and gaps on one are often filled on another.
  • Watch the dates: an address with no recent date may be years out of date.
  • Ignore pressure to upgrade: if the free view answers your question, you don't need the full report.

Finding someone in five steps

  1. Write down everything you know: full name, rough age, any past towns.
  2. Run a free name search with a city or state added.
  3. Match the result against the age and relatives listed.
  4. Confirm with a reverse phone or address search on a second site.
  5. Reach out politely, and leave it if the person doesn't reply.

Taking your own details off these sites

Most people search sites have an opt-out page where you can ask for your own record to be removed. Removing yourself from one site doesn't remove you from the others, so it's a job you'll repeat site by site.

Do you make people search or public record tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

Start with the free view and see if it answers your question. Most of the time a name, a city and a phone number are all you need to reconnect or to decide whether to pick up a call.

Treat everything you find as a lead to confirm, not a fact. And keep these sites well away from any decision about renting, hiring or lending, because that's where the law steps in.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a completely free people search?

Several sites offer a free name or phone search. Full reports with every detail usually need an upgrade.

Where do people search sites get their information?

They gather public records and other data sources, which is why results differ from site to site.

Can I use a people search site to check a tenant?

No. Tenant and employee screening is covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, so use a screening service that follows it.

Is it legal to look someone up online?

Searching public records is generally legal. How you use the results is what matters.

Will the person know I searched for them?

These sites don't usually tell the person, but check each site's privacy terms before you search.

Why is the information out of date?

Records update at different speeds, so an old address can linger for years.

Can I find someone with just a phone number?

Yes. Reverse phone lookups often show a name and a rough location for a number.

How do I remove my own details?

Use each site's opt-out page. You'll need to repeat it on every site that lists you.

Do free searches show criminal records?

Some reports mention records, but they can be wrong or mismatched, so never rely on them alone.

What if two people share the same name?

Add an age, a city or a relative's name to separate them.

Is a people search safe to use?

Stick to well-known sites, don't share your own details, and be wary of pages pushing you to upgrade.

Can I search for someone in another country?

Most of these sites focus on US records, so results outside the US are thin.
