To connect AirPods to an iPhone, go to the iPhone's Home Screen, open the AirPods case next to it and tap Connect when the setup card appears. If nothing appears, hold the case's setup button (or double-tap the front on newer models) and pick the AirPods in Settings, Bluetooth.
Pairing AirPods with an iPhone is meant to take seconds, and usually does: open the case, tap Connect, done. When it doesn't work, it's almost always one of three things: the iPhone isn't on the Home Screen, the iPhone's software is too old for that model of AirPods, or the AirPods still belong to someone else's Apple Account. Here's the normal route, the manual route and the fixes.
Connect AirPods to an iPhone
- Wake your iPhone, sign in with Face ID or your passcode and go to the Home Screen.
- With both AirPods in the charging case, open the lid and hold the case next to the iPhone.
- A setup animation appears. Tap Connect.
- Follow any extra steps for your model, such as setting up Siri or checking ear tip fit on AirPods Pro.
- Tap Done.
That one pairing does more than connect the phone. If you're signed in to iCloud, Apple sets the AirPods up automatically on your other devices signed in with the same Apple Account, such as your iPad and Mac, so you don't have to pair them again on each.
If the setup card doesn't appear
Connect them by hand instead:
- Put both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
- On AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 or AirPods 5, double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white. On every other model, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the light flashes white.
- On the iPhone, open Settings, then Bluetooth.
- Tap your AirPods when they appear in the list.
Check your iPhone is new enough
Every AirPods model needs a minimum version of iOS, and an out-of-date iPhone is a common reason pairing fails without explanation. Apple's list includes:
| AirPods model | Needs at least |
|---|---|
| AirPods 2 | iOS 12.2 |
| AirPods 3 | iOS 15.1 |
| AirPods 4 | iOS 18.0 |
| AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C) | iOS 17.0 |
| AirPods Pro 3 | iOS 26 |
To check, open Settings, General, About. To update, open Settings, General, Software Update. Apple also recommends the latest iOS for full functionality, so newer features such as head tracking or hearing settings may need an update even when basic pairing works.
Secondhand AirPods won't connect?
This is the catch most people don't expect. Apple ties AirPods to one Apple Account so that Find My and automatic switching work. If you bought or were given AirPods someone else used, they may need to remove them from their Apple Account before you can use them fully. Ask the previous owner to remove them in Find My, then reset the AirPods as below.
Reset and try again
If the AirPods connected before but won't now, a reset clears the old pairing. Put them in the case, close the lid and wait 30 seconds. On the iPhone, go to Settings, Bluetooth, tap the info button next to the AirPods and choose Forget This Device. Then open the lid and hold the setup button for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white. (AirPods 4, AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro 3 use a triple double-tap on the front of the case instead.) Then pair them again from the Home Screen.
Other quick fixes
- Charge the case for a while. A flat case can't pair.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on in Control Centre.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Clean the case contacts if one AirPod won't charge or connect.
Once they're connected
Open Settings and tap your AirPods' name near the top to change what a tap or squeeze does, switch noise control modes and rename them. Your iPhone and AirPods also work with handy features like Live Translation on AirPods. If you're choosing between AirPods and other headphones for travel or calls, my round-up of noise cancelling headphones compares the options.
Connect AirPods to two iPhones
AirPods follow your Apple Account, not a single phone. If you have a work iPhone and a personal one on different accounts, you'll need to pair them on each by hand, and only one can play audio at a time. To share music with a friend who has their own AirPods, use audio sharing from the AirPlay button in Control Centre instead; you don't need to pair their AirPods to your phone.

Check the battery after pairing
Once connected, open the case lid near your iPhone and a card shows the charge for each AirPod and the case. You can also add the Batteries widget to your Home Screen to see it at a glance. If one AirPod always drains faster, it's often doing the microphone work on calls, which is normal.
If the widget shows the case but not the AirPods, take them out and put them back in so the case can read them again.
My verdict
Open the case next to your iPhone on the Home Screen and tap Connect; that works nine times out of ten. If it doesn't, check the iPhone's iOS version first, then reset the AirPods, and with secondhand AirPods, make sure the old owner has removed them from their account.
