Does WhatsApp Mark as Unread Work?

The short version: yes, WhatsApp's mark as unread works exactly as the name suggests, it puts the green dot back on a chat so it nags you to reply, but it's a purely local, cosmetic change. It doesn't un-send a read receipt, doesn't hide the fact you've opened the chat, and doesn't touch the other person's screen at all. If you want to understand what it does and doesn't do before you rely on it for anything important, read on.

What mark as unread does

Mark as unread is a feature that lives entirely on your device. Long-press or swipe on a chat, tap the option, and that chat gets a bold green badge with a number or dot, exactly like a message you've never opened. That's it. It doesn't change anything on the sender's phone. It doesn't delete your read receipt. It doesn't tell WhatsApp's servers "pretend this didn't happen." It's a local flag, a bit of software telling your own app to display the chat differently.

I use it constantly, not as a trick, just as a to-do list. If someone sends me a long voice note at 11pm and I can't deal with it then, I mark it unread so it jumps back to the top of my chat list the next morning. It's the WhatsApp equivalent of leaving a letter propped against the kettle so you can't ignore it.

A worked example

Say you run a small consultancy and a client in the US messages you at 6pm UK time with a long brief about a campaign change. You open it on your phone during dinner, skim it, and think "I need to reply to this, with my laptop, not my thumbs." You mark it unread. Here is exactly what happens:

  • Your chat list shows the client's name in bold with a green unread marker.
  • Your unread message counter on the WhatsApp icon goes up by one, even though you've already read the message.
  • On the client's phone, nothing changes. If you'd already opened the message with read receipts turned on, they still see two blue ticks, timestamped from when you first opened it.
  • The notification doesn't resend. They don't get a second buzz on their phone.

The client cannot tell, from their end, that you marked anything as unread. The only thing that changes is your own view of your own phone.

The bit most people get wrong: read receipts don't reset

This is the uncomfortable truth that trips people up, and it's the main reason mark as unread gets misunderstood. People assume that if a chat looks unread on their end, it must look unread on the other end too, as if they've somehow rewound time. They haven't. If you opened a message and the blue ticks appeared, marking it unread afterwards does not remove those ticks or make them grey again. The read receipt is tied to the moment you opened the message, not to how your chat list looks now.

So if you're hoping to use mark as unread to dodge a difficult reply, pretending you never saw it, it won't work if read receipts are on. The other person already knows. The only genuine way to avoid triggering a read receipt is to not open the message in the first place, which means reading it from the notification banner or lock screen preview rather than tapping into the chat. If you want to go further and understand exactly what read receipts show and when, it's worth reading how to know if someone read your message on WhatsApp, because the two features get confused constantly and people make decisions based on a wrong assumption.

How to mark a chat as unread

On a phone, the steps are the same on Android and iPhone:

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to your chat list.
  2. Press and hold on the chat you want to flag (on iPhone, swipe left slightly instead).
  3. Tap the unread icon, a small envelope or speech bubble symbol, from the menu that appears.
  4. The chat jumps to bold with a green dot and your total unread count increases by one.

On WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, right-click the chat in the sidebar and choose "Mark as unread" from the dropdown. It syncs across your own devices within a second or two, since it's stored against your account settings, but again, only your devices see it.

Reversing it

Open the chat and it clears automatically, back to normal. Or long-press again and choose "Mark as read" if you've changed your mind without opening it.

Where it earns its place

I'd rank it as one of the most underused WhatsApp features for anyone juggling a busy inbox across time zones. If you work with people in the US, UK, and Australia, you're dealing with messages arriving at every hour, and mark as unread is a free, built-in triage tool. A few ways I'd use it:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Flagging anything that needs a considered reply rather than a quick thumbs-up.
  • Keeping client chats visible without pinning everything, since pinned chats clutter the top of the list fast.
  • Combining it with muting, so a busy group chat doesn't buzz constantly but still shows unread when something matters; see WhatsApp group notifications and how to mute, customise or fix them for the full setup.
  • Pairing it with muting a specific chat when one contact sends a lot of low-priority messages but occasionally sends something you must act on.

What it doesn't do, and what people assume it does

Three myths come up again and again:

  • It doesn't hide the chat. For that you need to archive it or use chat lock, covered in how to hide a WhatsApp chat using archive or chat lock. Marking something unread still leaves it sitting in plain view in your main list.
  • It doesn't resend a notification. Marking unread doesn't ping the other person or reactivate a notification banner on your own phone either. If you mark something unread and then forget to check your chat list, you'll still miss it.
  • It doesn't un-archive a chat automatically. If the chat is archived, marking it unread keeps it archived; it just shows the badge inside the archive folder. You'd need to pull it back manually, which is explained in how to unarchive a WhatsApp chat on Android and iPhone.

None of this makes the feature useless, it just means it's a visual reminder tool, not a privacy tool and not a notification tool. Treat it as a sticky note, not a rewind button.

A quick business reality check

If you manage client communication across WhatsApp as part of your work, and a lot of small businesses worldwide now do, mark as unread is handy but it's not a system. I'd never rely on it as my only method of tracking what needs a reply, because it's too easy to clear a badge by accidentally opening the chat while scrolling. If you're managing dozens of client conversations a week, pair it with a real task list or CRM note, and only use the WhatsApp badge as the first trigger, not the whole process. The same logic applies across other messaging platforms too; the mechanics differ (see how encrypted DMs work on Twitter, now X for a comparison) but the underlying lesson is identical: a visual flag on your own screen is never a substitute for an actual process.

If your business leans on WhatsApp heavily for client work and you're finding the whole set-up, read receipts, archiving, notifications, hard to manage at scale, that's usually a sign you need a wider look at your tools and workflow rather than another phone trick, and that's exactly the kind of gap an AI consultant for small business can help you close.

Frequently asked questions

Does marking a WhatsApp chat as unread notify the other person?

No. It's a local setting that only changes how the chat looks on your own device. The other person's phone, their notifications, and their view of the chat are completely unaffected.

Does mark as unread remove blue ticks or read receipts?

No. Once a message has been opened and the read receipt has been sent, marking the chat unread afterwards does not reverse it. The blue ticks stay exactly as they were.

Can I mark an archived WhatsApp chat as unread?

Yes, but it stays archived. The green unread badge appears inside the archive folder rather than pulling the chat back into your main list automatically.

Why does my unread count go up when I use mark as unread?

Because WhatsApp treats the flagged chat exactly like a unread message for counting purposes, even though you've already read it. That's the whole point of the feature, it's designed to nag you back into the chat.
