When you restrict someone on Instagram, their new comments on your posts are visible only to them until you approve one, and their messages move to your message requests without a notification. They also can't see when you're online or whether you've read their messages, and Instagram doesn't tell them they've been restricted.
Instagram built Restrict as an anti-bullying tool and announced it in 2019. The thinking behind it was simple: you get some distance from someone without the drama of a block they might notice. It's the quiet option, and that's both its strength and its limit.
They can still, they can no longer
Here's what a restricted person can and can't do once you've switched it on.
| They can still | They can no longer |
|---|---|
| See your public posts, Reels and stories | Have their new comments seen by others, unless you approve them |
| Follow you, and keep following you | Land their messages in your main inbox |
| Comment on your posts (only they see the comment) | See when you're online |
| Send you messages, which go to your requests | See whether you've read their messages |
| Find your profile in search | Find out from Instagram that you restricted them |
When a restricted person comments on one of your posts, the comment looks normal to them. Everyone else sees nothing. You'll see it with a note that it's from a restricted account, and you can tap to approve it if you want others to see it, or leave it hidden.
Their messages work the same quiet way. They sit in your message requests, you aren't notified, and you can open them whenever you choose. Because read receipts are hidden from them, they won't know if you've looked.
What it looks like from their side
From the restricted person's point of view, very little seems to change. Your profile looks the same. Their comment posts as usual and they can see it under your photo. Their message sends as usual. What they don't get is the reaction: no reply under the comment from anyone else, no 'Seen' on the message, no green dot telling them you're online.
That's why Restrict works so well against someone who's fishing for a response. They can keep typing, but the audience they wanted, you and your followers, never sees it unless you choose to let it through.
Three ways to restrict someone
Pick the route that's closest to where you are. All three do the same thing.
From their profile
- Open their profile.
- Tap the three dots in the top right corner.
- Tap Restrict.
From one of their comments
- Open the post with their comment.
- On iPhone, swipe left on the comment. On Android, press and hold it.
- Choose Restrict from the options that appear.
This route is handy when the comment that's upset you is right there in front of you. You don't have to go looking for their profile.
From your Settings
- Go to your profile and open the menu.
- Open Settings and find Restricted accounts.
- Search for their username.
- Tap Restrict next to their name.
If a menu name looks different in your app, search Settings for the word 'Restricted'. Instagram moves things around now and then, but the search box always finds it.
The catch: Restrict isn't a privacy wall
This is the bit that trips people up. Restricting someone doesn't hide your account from them. If your account is public, they can still see every post, Reel and story you share, and they can keep following you.
Restrict controls how they can reach you, not what they can see. So if you'd like them out of your stories as well, add them to 'Hide story from' in your story settings. If you want them gone from your profile completely, block them instead.
It's also worth knowing that restricting doesn't delete anything they've already written. Comments they posted before you restricted them stay up until you remove them yourself.
When Restrict is the right tool, and when it isn't
Restrict fits when blocking would cause more trouble than it solves. Think of a classmate, a colleague or someone in a shared friend group who'd notice a block and make a scene about it. It also suits someone leaving snide comments you'd like to keep off your posts without a public row, or a person whose messages you'd rather read on your own schedule.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Block fits when someone threatens you, keeps coming back after you've ignored them, or makes you feel unsafe. Restrict is too gentle for that. A block stops them seeing your profile and messaging you at all.
Mute fits when there's no problem with the person, you just want less of their content. They keep seeing your posts, you stop seeing theirs, and nobody's the wiser. Here's how to mute someone on Instagram if that's closer to what you need.
You can also combine them. Plenty of people restrict someone and hide their story from them at the same time, which keeps the person out of both your comments and your stories without a block. On a private account you can go one step further and remove them as a follower too.
A simple rule of thumb: mute for your feed, restrict for your comments and messages, block for your safety.
How to undo it
Go to Settings, then Restricted accounts, and tap Unrestrict next to their name. You can also open their profile, tap the three dots and choose Unrestrict. Full steps are in my guide to how to unrestrict someone on Instagram. Once you do, their new comments show to everyone again and their messages go back to your main inbox.
My advice
If someone was being unpleasant and I'd rather not start a fight, I'd restrict them first and hide my stories from them. If it carried on, or ever felt unsafe, I'd screenshot what I needed and block. And if you block someone and later regret it, here's how to unblock someone on Instagram.
Frequently asked questions
Does the person know when you restrict them?
No. Instagram doesn't notify someone when you restrict them. They might notice their comments aren't getting replies, but they aren't told.
Can a restricted person see my stories?
Yes. Restrict doesn't hide your stories or posts. To keep your stories from them, use 'Hide story from' or block them.
Can I still read messages from someone I've restricted?
Yes. Their messages go to your message requests and you aren't notified. They can't see whether you've read them.
Is restricting the same as blocking?
No. A blocked person can't find your profile or message you. A restricted person can still see your public posts and stories, follow you and send messages, but their comments are hidden from others and their messages go to your requests.
What does it mean to restrict someone on Instagram?
It means you've limited how they can interact with you without blocking them. Their comments are hidden from others, their messages go to requests, and your online and read status is hidden from them.
