How to See Who Clicked on Your Instagram Link, and What Shows Instead

You can't see who clicked your Instagram link. Instagram never shows the names of people who tapped it. What you can see is how many taps it got, and only on a professional (business or creator) account, in Insights for your bio link and in each story's insights for a link sticker.

If you're on a personal account, you won't see any link numbers at all. Switching to a professional account is free and takes a minute in Settings, under Account type and tools. You keep your posts and followers, and the counts start from the day you switch, so it's worth doing before you share a link you care about.

Link typeWhere the count showsWhat it tells you
Link in your bioProfessional dashboard or Insights, under profile activity, as external link tapsHow many times people tapped your bio link over the period you pick
Link sticker on a storyThat story's own insights, as link tapsHow many taps that one story's link got
Link in an ad or boosted postThe ad's results in your professional dashboard or in Ads ManagerTaps and other results for that ad only
Link typed in a caption or commentNowhereNothing, because these links aren't clickable on Instagram

For your bio link:

  1. Go to your profile and tap Professional dashboard (or Insights).
  2. Open the overview of your account's activity.
  3. Choose the date range you want to look at.
  4. Look under profile activity for external link taps. That's your bio link count.

For a story with a link sticker:

  1. Open the story while it's live, or find it in your archive or highlights afterwards.
  2. Swipe up on the story, or tap the Activity or insights option at the bottom.
  3. Look for link taps in that story's insights.

If a label looks different in your version of the app, look for the word 'Insights' on your profile or in Settings.

The catch: a tap isn't a visit

Instagram counts taps, and a tap isn't the same as someone landing on your page. Some people tap and close the page before it finishes loading, or lose signal halfway. So your website analytics will usually show fewer visits than Instagram shows taps. That gap is normal, and it doesn't mean either number is wrong.

The fix is a tracking tag. Add a UTM tag to the end of your link (a short label that tells your analytics where the visit came from, such as 'source: instagram, campaign: bio'). Then your website analytics can show which visits came from Instagram, which pages they read, and whether they signed up or bought something. That's the number that tells you if the link is working.

Setting one up is simpler than it sounds:

  1. Open a free UTM link builder, such as the campaign URL builder Google offers for Google Analytics.
  2. Paste the page address you want people to land on.
  3. Fill in the source (instagram), the medium (social or bio) and a campaign name you'll recognise later.
  4. Copy the long link it creates. If it looks messy, a link-in-bio tool or a link shortener can tidy it.
  5. Paste it into your bio or story link sticker, then tap it once yourself to check it opens the right page.

Getting more detail without naming anyone

You can't learn who clicked, but you can learn a lot about what's working:

  • Tracking tags on every link. Use a different tag for your bio, each story and each campaign, so you can compare them in your analytics.
  • A link-in-bio tool. Most show clicks for each button on the page, so you can see which of your links people pick. Compare the options in this link-in-bio tools comparison.
  • Story link stickers for specific offers. Each story gets its own tap count, which makes it easy to test one message against another.
  • Ask. A question sticker or a 'reply with the word GUIDE' call to action tells you who's interested, because people choose to tell you.

If you don't have the link sticker yet or aren't sure how it works, see how to add a link to your Instagram story.

Why Instagram won't show names

Tapping a link is a private action. People don't expect the account owner to get a list of their names when they open a web page, the same way you don't get a list of everyone who looked at your shop window. Instagram keeps it that way for everyone, including big brands and creators.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

That's also why any app or website that claims to show who clicked your link, or who viewed your profile, is either guessing or a scam. Many ask for your Instagram login, and once they have it they can take over your account, post spam or sell access to it. Don't give your password to a third-party app that promises this. The same goes for 'profile viewer' apps, covered in can you see who viewed your Instagram profile.

The names you can see are the ones Instagram already shows: who viewed your story, who liked or commented, and who sent you a message. Those people chose to interact with you in a way Instagram makes visible. Link taps aren't one of them.

Making the numbers useful

A tap count on its own doesn't tell you much. Here's how I'd read it:

  • Compare weeks, not days. One busy day can make a link look better than it really performs.
  • Check what you posted when taps went up. A story that mentions the link usually beats a bio link left on its own.
  • Match taps against visits in your analytics, using the tracking tag, to see how many arrive.
  • Watch what happens after the visit. Sign-ups or sales matter more than taps.

My verdict

If it were my account, I'd switch to a professional account, put a tracking tag on every link, and judge each link on what people do after they land, not on who tapped it. Names were never on offer, and you don't need them to know what's working.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see who clicked the link in my Instagram bio?

No. Instagram only shows how many taps your bio link got, and only on professional accounts. It never shows names.

Where do I find link taps on Instagram?

On a professional account, open your Professional dashboard or Insights and look under profile activity for external link taps. Each story with a link sticker shows its own link taps.

Why are my website visits lower than my Instagram link taps?

Some people tap and leave before the page loads, so not every tap becomes a visit. Add a tracking tag to your link to see the real visits in your analytics.

Do apps that show who clicked my link work?

No. They're guessing or they're scams after your login. Don't give your Instagram password to any app that promises this.
