Google Meet Camera Not Working? Fix It in Minutes

If your camera isn't working in Google Meet, first check that the browser has permission: click the camera icon in the address bar and allow it. Then close other apps using the camera, make sure the right camera is selected, and check your computer's privacy settings and any physical privacy shutter. Google says a Camera failed error usually means the browser can't reach the camera.

Two minutes before a client call and Google Meet shows a black box where your face should be. It's stressful, but camera problems in Meet almost always come down to one of a few things: a permission that's switched off, another app holding the camera, or a little shutter you forgot about. Work through these checks in order and you'll usually be on screen before the meeting starts.

The quick checklist

  1. Allow Meet to use your camera from the icon in the address bar.
  2. Close other apps that might be using the camera, then reload Meet.
  3. Pick the right camera in Meet's settings.
  4. Check your computer's camera privacy settings.
  5. Look for a physical cover or privacy switch on the camera.
  6. Update your browser.

Step 1: Give Meet permission

Google says you must allow camera access the first time you join a meeting. If you clicked Block by mistake, Meet can't see your camera at all.

  1. Open meet.google.com and join the meeting.
  2. In the address bar, click the Camera icon.
  3. Turn on Camera.
  4. Choose Allow on every visit.

Step 2: Fix Chrome's camera settings

If you see a Camera failed message, Google says it often means the browser can't access the camera. In Chrome, type chrome://settings/content/camera into the address bar and make sure sites can ask to use your camera. If meet.google.com is listed under sites that were allowed before, delete that entry, then allow camera access again so Chrome starts fresh.

Step 3: Close other apps using the camera

Only one app can usually use a webcam at a time. If Zoom, Teams, FaceTime or your camera app is open, Meet may get a black screen. Google's advice is to close other apps that use the camera, then reload Meet. Don't forget apps running quietly in the background, such as a video tool you used earlier.

Step 4: Choose the right camera

If you've got a laptop camera and a plug-in webcam, or a monitor with its own camera, Meet might be using the wrong one. Google suggests making sure you choose the correct camera, not a screen or another device. In Meet, open the settings from the three-dot menu, go to Video and pick your camera from the list.

Step 5: Check your computer's privacy settings

Your deviceWhere to allow camera access
WindowsSettings, Privacy & security, Camera, then turn on camera access for apps
Mac (macOS Mojave or later)System Settings, Privacy & Security, Camera, then tick your browser
ChromebookSettings, Privacy and security, Privacy controls, Camera access

This is the one people miss. Even if Chrome allows the camera, your operating system can still block it. On a Mac, if your browser isn't ticked in the Camera list, Meet can't use the camera, however many times you allow it in Chrome.

Step 6: Look for a shutter or privacy switch

Here's the fix that makes people laugh with relief. Google suggests opening your computer's built-in camera app. If it doesn't show your image either, check for a physical camera cover or privacy switch. Many laptops have a small slider above the lens, and some have a switch on the side. Google notes some models show an orange, red or amber light when the privacy switch is on.

What a black screen tells you

What you seeLikely cause
Camera app works, Meet doesn'tMeet or browser permissions
Camera app shows nothing eitherShutter, privacy switch or hardware
Crossed-out camera icon in MeetCamera turned off or blocked
Video works but looks poorSlow internet connection

Step 7: Update and restart

Google recommends making sure your browser is up to date. An update plus a full restart of the browser clears up a surprising number of glitches. If you're still stuck on a Chromebook, Google mentions a hardware reset; on other devices, a full computer restart is the next sensible step.

Camera works but the picture is poor

If your camera works but the image is grainy, frozen or blurry, the camera probably isn't the problem. Google lists a slow internet connection as a cause of video quality problems. Move closer to your router, close other tabs streaming video, or switch off other devices hogging the connection during the call.

Have a plan B for important calls

  • Test your camera in Meet's preview screen a few minutes before a big call.
  • Keep the Meet app on your phone as a backup way to join.
  • If all else fails, join by audio and apologise for the camera; most people understand.

My verdict

Allow the camera from the address bar, close other apps using it, pick the right camera, then check your computer's privacy settings and any physical shutter. If the built-in camera app shows nothing either, it's the hardware or a privacy switch, not Meet. Test a few minutes before important calls and keep your phone ready as a backup.
