You can follow up to 7,500 accounts on Instagram. Instagram set the cap to reduce spam, and it applies to everyone, however many followers you have.
If Instagram suddenly won't let you follow anyone else, the 7,500 cap is the first thing to check. Here's what Instagram's help centre says about it, and the quirk that makes it look inconsistent.
The rule
Instagram says that to help reduce spam, it doesn't allow anyone to follow more than 7,500 people. Try to go past it and you'll see an error message. The cap is about how many accounts you follow, not how many follow you. Your follower count can keep growing without any limit from this rule.
The quirk: some accounts follow more than 7,500
You may spot accounts following far more than 7,500 people and wonder how. Instagram's answer is simple: anyone currently following more than 7,500 did so before the change was made. Those older follows weren't removed, but those accounts can't add more until they're under the cap. So seeing a bigger number elsewhere doesn't mean the rule doesn't apply to you, and it's not a sign of a special account type either. It's simply history: the follows were made before the ceiling existed.
What applies to who
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Following under 7,500 | You can keep following accounts |
| Following 7,500 | You'll see an error when you try to follow more |
| Following more than 7,500 from before the change | Existing follows stay; you can't add new ones |
| Big follower count | Makes no difference; the cap applies regardless of your followers |
How to make room
The only way to follow someone new at the cap is to unfollow someone else. A sensible order:
- Go to your profile and open your Following list.
- Sort or scroll to the accounts you followed longest ago; they're often the least relevant now.
- Unfollow inactive accounts, brands you no longer use and pages you followed for a one-off giveaway.
- Then follow the new account you wanted.
I'd do it in small batches rather than hundreds at once. The cap exists to stop spammy behaviour, so don't give Instagram a reason to think that's what you're doing.
Why Instagram caps following at all
Instagram's own reason is spam. Accounts that follow thousands of people in the hope of a follow back are the classic pattern of bots and follow-for-follow schemes, and a hard ceiling stops that from scaling. For a normal person or business it rarely bites. If it does bite you, in my experience it's often because the account was used for follow-back growth at some point, and the follows from that era are the first ones to clear out.
If you can't follow anyone and you're nowhere near 7,500
Then the cap isn't your problem. Instagram's help article also covers why you might not be able to follow more people, and if you're well under the cap the cause is something else, such as a temporary restriction on your account. The related guide below walks through those. If the person you're trying to follow has a Teen Account, it may be private by default, and teens have to accept new followers, so your request can sit waiting.

My verdict
If you're anywhere near 7,500, your feed is probably too noisy to be useful anyway. Treat the cap as a nudge to tidy up: unfollow what you don't read, and your feed gets better too. If you're tidying up anyway, it's a good moment to check on any old account you deactivated, and if you suspect someone else has been following accounts from your login, here's how to recover a hacked Instagram account.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Instagram follow limit?
7,500 accounts. Instagram says it doesn't allow anyone to follow more than 7,500 people, to help reduce spam.
Why do some people follow more than 7,500 on Instagram?
They followed those accounts before Instagram introduced the cap. Their existing follows stayed, but they can't add more.
Is there a limit on Instagram followers?
Not from this rule. The 7,500 cap is on how many accounts you follow, not how many follow you.
Does the Instagram follow limit apply to business accounts?
Yes. Instagram says the 7,500 limit applies to anyone, regardless of how many followers they have.
How do I fix 'You can't follow any more people' on Instagram?
If you're at 7,500, unfollow some accounts to make room. If you're well below it, the cap isn't the cause, so look at other restrictions on your account.
