Where Is WhatsApp Backup Stored? Android and iPhone

WhatsApp backups are stored in your own cloud account: on Android in your Google Account's storage, and on iPhone in your iCloud account. WhatsApp doesn't keep a copy of your chats for you. Each new backup replaces the last, and Google may delete Android backups that haven't been updated in five months.

If you're changing phones, running out of storage, or worried about losing your chats, it helps to know exactly where your WhatsApp backup lives. The short answer is that it isn't on WhatsApp's servers. It sits in the cloud account linked to your phone, which means Google or Apple's storage rules apply, not WhatsApp's. Here's where to find it on each phone, and the limits that quietly break backups.

Android: your Google Account

On Android, WhatsApp backs up to the cloud storage in your Google Account. WhatsApp's help stresses that this storage is provided and managed by Google, so it counts against your Google storage, alongside Gmail and Google Photos. Two rules from WhatsApp's help page matter most:

  • Each backup replaces the last. You don't get a history of old backups to go back to.
  • Old backups can vanish. Google may automatically delete backups that haven't been updated in five months. If you stop backing up, for example on an old phone in a drawer, the backup may not be there when you need it.

If your Google storage is full, WhatsApp says further backups are blocked until you free up space. That's the most common reason a backup silently stops working.

iPhone: your iCloud account

On iPhone, WhatsApp backs up to iCloud. WhatsApp recommends having at least 2.05 times the size of your backup free, both in iCloud and on your phone, because the phone needs room to build the backup before uploading it. iCloud only stores one WhatsApp backup per account, so, as on Android, a new one replaces the old.

How to check your backup

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Chats, then Chat backup.
  3. Look at the date and size of the last backup, and which account it's going to.
  4. Tap Back up to run one now.

If the date is weeks old, something has stopped it. Check your cloud storage space and that you're signed in to the right Google Account or Apple ID on the phone.

Why you can't open the backup file

People often look for their WhatsApp backup in Google Drive or iCloud expecting to open it like a document. You can't read your chats that way. The backup is there so WhatsApp can restore it onto a phone, not for browsing. If you want a readable copy of one conversation, export that chat from inside WhatsApp instead.

What isn't in your backup

  • Opened view once photos, videos and voice messages. WhatsApp says only unopened view once media can be restored; once opened, it isn't included.
  • Anything after the last backup. Messages since your last backup are only on your phone.
  • A backup after account deletion. Deleting your WhatsApp account deletes your Google Account backup too.

WhatsApp's own backup storage option

WhatsApp now offers a third choice alongside Google and iCloud: its own end-to-end encrypted backup storage. WhatsApp says no one, not even WhatsApp or Meta, can access it, and it comes with 2 GB of free space. That changes the answer to where your backup is stored: if you've picked this option, it's held by WhatsApp in encrypted form rather than in your Google or Apple account. If you aren't sure which you're using, the Chat backup screen shows where your last backup went.

A quick checklist when backups keep failing

  1. Check free space in your Google Account or iCloud, and on the phone itself.
  2. Make sure the phone is signed in to the account you expect.
  3. Try backing up on Wi-Fi rather than mobile data.
  4. Exclude videos from the backup if it's huge, so the rest can finish.
  5. Update WhatsApp and restart the phone, then run the backup again.

Moving to a new phone

Before you switch, run a fresh backup and check the date. On the new phone, sign in to the same Google Account or Apple ID before installing WhatsApp, then verify your number and choose restore. Moving between Android and iPhone is different, because a Google backup can't restore onto an iPhone or the reverse; WhatsApp has a separate chat transfer process for that.

My verdict

Your WhatsApp backup lives in your Google Account on Android or iCloud on iPhone, never with WhatsApp itself. Keep it working by leaving enough cloud space free, backing up regularly so Google doesn't clear an old one, and checking the backup date before you change phones. That one habit prevents most lost-chat stories.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my WhatsApp backup stored on Android?

In the cloud storage of your Google Account, which is provided and managed by Google.

Where is my WhatsApp backup stored on iPhone?

In your iCloud account. iCloud keeps one WhatsApp backup per account.

Does WhatsApp keep a copy of my chats?

Not in your normal backup. Backups sit in your own Google or iCloud account, unless you choose WhatsApp's own encrypted backup storage.

Why did my WhatsApp backup disappear?

Google may delete Android backups that haven't been updated in five months, and each new backup replaces the last.

Can I open my WhatsApp backup in Google Drive?

No. The backup is for restoring WhatsApp on a phone. Export a chat from WhatsApp if you want a readable copy.
