YouTube Not Working on Xbox? Error, Sign-In and Quality Fixes

If YouTube isn't working on Xbox, and you see YouTube isn't available right now, YouTube says a slow internet connection is the likely cause. Restart the console, check the network, update the YouTube app and the Xbox, and if sign-in fails, reset the YouTube app from its settings and sign in again at youtube.com/activate.

The YouTube app on Xbox usually fails in one of three ways: the "YouTube isn't available right now" message, a sign-in loop, or videos that buffer or look worse than they should. Each has a different fix, and YouTube's own help for Xbox points at a cause most people overlook first: connection speed. Here's how to work through each one.

"YouTube isn't available right now" on Xbox

YouTube's Xbox help page says this error may be because your internet connection is slow. Try these in order:

  1. Run the network test in your Xbox settings and check the connection is stable.
  2. Restart your router and the Xbox.
  3. Use a wired connection if the console is far from the router.
  4. Quit and reopen the YouTube app.

Can't sign in to YouTube on Xbox

Signing in uses a code rather than typing your password on the controller:

  1. In the YouTube app, go to Sign in & Settings and select Sign in. An activation code appears.
  2. On a phone or computer, go to youtube.com/activate and enter the code.
  3. Select Allow Access.

If that keeps failing, YouTube's sign-in troubleshooting suggests making sure you have the latest YouTube app, signing in with a Google Account, and resetting the YouTube app in its Settings. Resetting signs you out, so you'll need the activation code again afterwards. YouTube also says to check your console is supported.

Video quality lower than expected

This often isn't a fault. YouTube says the original Xbox One tops out at 1080p, while the Xbox One S, One X, Series S and Series X can play 4K, and HDR is supported on those newer models. On a Series X or S, YouTube says videos can play up to 4K at 60 frames per second. If you're on the original Xbox One, 1080p is the ceiling no matter what your TV supports.

ConsoleMaximum YouTube qualityHDR
Xbox One (original)1080pNo
Xbox One S / One X4KYes
Xbox Series S / Series X4KYes

A slow connection also drops quality automatically, so a blurry picture on a 4K console usually points back to the network.

Using your phone as a remote

If the controller is fiddly, YouTube lets you pair your phone with the Xbox app and use it as a remote. Search on your phone, then send the video to the console. It's also a good test: if casting from your phone works but browsing on the Xbox doesn't, the app on the console needs a reset or update.

When reinstalling the app helps

If resetting the app and signing in again doesn't fix it, uninstall the YouTube app from the Xbox and install it again from the Microsoft Store. YouTube's help says the app is available on most game consoles, and if it's missing, the console's store is where to get it. Reinstalling clears any corrupted app data, and because your playlists and channels you follow live in your Google Account, you won't lose anything once you sign back in.

Kids and YouTube on Xbox

If a child's account is signed in, some videos may not appear or may refuse to play because of the account's settings rather than a fault. Check which account is signed in on the YouTube app before troubleshooting, especially on a family console where several people use it. Switching to the right account often fixes missing videos and recommendations straight away.

Voice control

YouTube says you can control the app with your voice on Xbox Series X|S by saying "Xbox Select," then saying any highlighted word or phrase on screen. If voice control isn't responding, check your headset or microphone is connected.

My verdict

On Xbox, treat "YouTube isn't available right now" as a connection problem first: restart the router and console, and use a cable if you can. For sign-in loops, reset the YouTube app and use the youtube.com/activate code. And if your picture won't go above 1080p, check which Xbox you have before you chase a fault that isn't there.
