To rename a Slack channel, open it, click the channel name at the top, click Edit next to Channel name, type the new name and click Save Changes. By default, owners, admins and the channel's Channel Managers can do this. If the channel is archived, you'll need to unarchive it first.
Channels outgrow their names. A project ends, a team merges, or someone called a channel 'misc-stuff' two years ago and now it's where the important decisions happen. Renaming takes seconds if you have permission. Here's how, who's allowed, and how to pick a name that still makes sense in a year's time.
Steps on desktop
- Open the channel you want to rename.
- Click the channel name in the conversation header.
- Next to Channel name, click Edit.
- Type the new name and click Save Changes.
Steps on your phone
- Open the channel.
- Tap the channel name in the header.
- Tap Edit, then tap the channel name.
- Type the new name and tap Done or Save.
Who's allowed to rename a channel
| Role | Can rename |
|---|---|
| Workspace Owners and Admins | Any public channel, including the general one, plus private channels they've joined |
| Channel Managers | Channels they manage |
| Other members | Only if your workspace allows it |
| Org Owners and Admins (Enterprise) | Multi-workspace channels too |
If the Edit option is missing, you don't have permission. Ask a Channel Manager, an admin or an owner. On Business+ and Enterprise plans, admins can also rename channels in bulk using Slack's channel management tools.
Renaming an archived channel
Slack won't let you rename an archived channel directly. Unarchive it first, rename it, then archive it again if it's still finished. That's worth doing when you want old project channels to follow a new naming system, so they're easy to find in search later.
Pick a name using prefixes
Slack's own naming guidelines recommend starting channel names with a standard prefix, so related channels sit together and people can guess what's inside:
- help- for questions to another team, such as #help-it.
- team- for a team's own work, such as #team-design.
- proj- for cross-team projects, such as #proj-redesign.
- announce- for announcements, such as #announce-sales.
- triage- for handling incoming issues, such as #triage-website.
- event- for planning events, such as #event-company-picnic.
Slack notes prefixes are especially useful if your sidebar sorts channels alphabetically, because all the proj- channels line up together. Owners and admins can set workspace prefixes too: Slack provides #help, #proj and #team by default, with up to six prefixes on the free plan and up to 99 on Pro and Business+.
Setting up prefixes for everyone (admins)
- On your desktop, click Admin in the sidebar.
- Hover over Edit workspace and click Channel prefixes.
- Click Add Prefix.
- Type the prefix and a short description of when to use it.
- Click Save.
From then on, members can pick from your list when they create a channel on desktop, though they can still type their own names. The descriptions matter: 'proj- for any piece of work with an end date' stops people guessing.
When you change your prefixes
If an admin replaces an old prefix with a new one, Slack says existing channels won't update automatically. Someone has to rename them by hand, which is where this guide comes in. Make a list, share it in your announcements channel and rename them all on the same day to avoid a confusing half-and-half sidebar.
Tell people after you rename
A renamed channel can throw people for a moment. Post a quick message in the channel explaining the new name and why, and update the channel topic and description, which Slack suggests using so everyone knows what the channel is for. If you link to channels in documents or bookmarks, update those references too.
Rename, or start a fresh channel?
Rename when the conversation is continuing but its purpose has shifted, for example a project moving from planning to delivery, or a team changing its name. The history stays in one place, and people don't have to join anything new. Start a fresh channel when the old one has become a dumping ground: a new name on a messy channel doesn't fix the mess. In that case, create the new channel, post a link to it in the old one, and archive the old channel once people have moved over.

Private channels and renaming
Private channels follow the same steps. Slack says owners and admins can rename private channels they've joined, and members can rename channels they manage. If you're not in a private channel, you won't see it to rename it, which is by design.
Good names, bad names
- Good: #proj-website-2026, #client-acme, #team-support.
- Bad: #general2, #new-channel, #stuff, #temp.
- Keep names short, lowercase and descriptive of the work, not the people.
If a channel's work is done rather than changed, renaming isn't the answer: archive the Slack channel instead. And if it's simply not relevant to you any more, leave it.
My verdict
Rename from the channel name, Edit, Save Changes, if you're an owner, admin or the channel's manager. Use Slack's prefix system so names stay predictable, unarchive before renaming old channels, and tell the channel what changed. A tidy naming scheme saves everyone hours of searching.
