How to Change Your ChatGPT Password (or Reset It)

To change your ChatGPT password, sign in, open Settings, choose Account and update the password there. If you've forgotten it, log out, click Log in, enter your email and use the Forgot password link in the reset flow. If you sign in with Google, Microsoft or Apple, there's no ChatGPT password, so change it with that provider.

There are two different jobs hiding behind this search: changing a password you know, and resetting one you've forgotten. ChatGPT handles them in different places, and if you signed up with Google, Microsoft or Apple, neither applies. Here's the route for each, plus the one fact about OpenAI passwords that surprises developers.

Change your password while signed in

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Open your account menu and go to Settings.
  3. Select Account.
  4. Add or update your password and save it.

OpenAI notes a handy side effect: once a password is set, you can change the email address on your account from the same settings page. If you signed up without a password and want to switch emails, this is the step that unlocks it.

Reset a password you've forgotten

  1. Log out of ChatGPT, or open a private or incognito browser window.
  2. Go to the ChatGPT home page and click Log in.
  3. Enter your email address or phone number and click Continue.
  4. On the password screen, select Forgot password?
  5. Open the reset email and follow its instructions.

Which route applies to you?

How you sign inWhat to do
Email and password, and you know itSettings, then Account, then update the password
Email and password, but you've forgotten itLog in, then Forgot password?, then follow the reset email
Continue with Google, Microsoft or AppleThere's no ChatGPT password. Change your password on that provider's own site

That last row is behind most 'I never got the reset email' messages. If you originally clicked Continue with Google, ChatGPT never had a password for you, so there's nothing to reset. Log in with the same button you used to sign up.

It changes more than ChatGPT

Here's the bit people don't expect. OpenAI says your ChatGPT password is the password for your whole OpenAI account, so changing it also changes how you sign in to the API Platform. If you share a login across a team's developer tools, or you've saved the old password in a script or a password manager entry labelled 'API', update those too.

If the reset email doesn't arrive

  • Check your spam or junk folder.
  • Make sure you're looking in the inbox you used to sign up, not your newer address.
  • Check the email address you typed for typos.
  • If you signed up with Google, Microsoft or Apple, stop looking: there's no email coming, because there's no password.

Still stuck after all of that? OpenAI says to contact its support team through the help centre.

If you think someone else is using your account

Change the password straight away. OpenAI says that once you do, every current session is logged out within 30 minutes, so anyone else signed in will need your new password to get back in. If you think an API key was exposed as well, OpenAI's help centre has an Unauthorized Activity form where you choose to report unauthorised activity on your account.

While you're in there, look at what you've shared with ChatGPT over time. My guide to whether ChatGPT is private explains the data controls worth checking after a scare.

Adding a password when you never had one

Plenty of people signed up with a one-time code or a social login and only later want a password, usually so they can change the email address on the account. OpenAI's help article covers this: sign in, go to Settings then Account, and add a password there. Once it's set, the option to change your email appears on the same page.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you use ChatGPT on more than one device, expect to sign in again on each after a change. That's normal, and it's a good moment to check you recognise every device. After a suspected break-in, it's also worth checking nothing inside the account was changed. Look at your custom instructions and memory settings, because an intruder could have left instructions there that quietly shape every answer you get afterwards. If anything looks unfamiliar, remove it.

A few habits worth keeping

  • Use a password you don't use anywhere else, because one leak elsewhere shouldn't open your ChatGPT history.
  • Store it in a password manager rather than your browser notes.
  • If several people need ChatGPT, give each their own account rather than sharing one login.
  • Change it after any staff member or freelancer who knew it moves on.
  • Keep the email account linked to ChatGPT secure as well, because whoever controls that inbox can reset your ChatGPT password.

My verdict

Knowing your password, change it under Settings and Account. Forgotten it, use Forgot password? from the login screen. And if you joined with Google, Microsoft or Apple, the password you need to change belongs to them, not to OpenAI. Whichever applies, remember the change also applies to the API Platform.
