How to Find Archived Chats in ChatGPT (and Unarchive Them)

To find archived chats in ChatGPT, open Settings, choose Data controls and select Archived chats (View archived chats on some devices). From there you can open a chat, unarchive it back into your sidebar or delete it. Archived chats also still show up when you search your chat history.

The usual panic goes like this: a conversation you were sure you saved has vanished from the sidebar. Nine times out of ten it was archived, not deleted, and it's sitting exactly where OpenAI says it should be. Here's where to look on each device, how to put a chat back, and how to tell an archived chat from one that's gone for good.

Steps to open your archived chats

  1. Open Settings from your account menu.
  2. Select Data controls.
  3. Select Archived chats or View archived chats, depending on your device. If you see Manage, select it.
  4. Find the conversation you want and open it.
  5. Select Unarchive to return it to your regular history, or Delete if you want it gone.

You don't have to dig through settings at all. OpenAI says archived chats remain searchable, so open Search from the sidebar, or press Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on a Mac, and type a word you remember from the conversation. Archived and regular chats both appear in the results. Deleted chats don't, which makes search a quick test of whether a chat still exists.

Archived, deleted or just hidden?

You deleted itNowhere you can reachNo. OpenAI says deleted chats can't be restored, even by support

That third row catches a lot of people. If you use ChatGPT with a personal login and a work workspace, each keeps its own history, so check which one you're signed in to before assuming the worst.

How a chat gets archived without you noticing

Archiving is quick by design. You open the three-dot menu next to a chat in your history and select Archive, and OpenAI says no confirmation is required. It's easy to tap by accident when you meant Rename or Share, and the chat simply disappears from the sidebar.

There's also a bulk option. Under Settings then Data controls you'll find Archive all chats. If someone tidied up your account, or you hit it while looking for something else, every conversation moves into the archive in one go, including chats inside projects.

Unarchiving a chat

Once you've found the chat in Archived chats, select Unarchive and it goes back into your regular history in the sidebar. Nothing about the conversation changes: the messages, any files and its retention period stay exactly as they were. OpenAI says archiving doesn't change how long a chat is kept, so an archived chat is stored for as long as a normal one.

Be careful with Delete all chats

Right next to Archive all chats sits Delete all chats, and OpenAI is clear that it can't be undone. Deleted chats vanish from your view immediately and are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. If you're trying to clean up, archive first. You can always delete later; you can't un-delete.

Finding archived chats on your phone

The same controls live in the iPhone and Android apps. Open the menu, go to your settings, then Data controls, and look for Archived chats. OpenAI notes the label can differ slightly by device, which is why you'll sometimes see View archived chats or a Manage button instead. Whatever it's called, it's always under Data controls.

Archive on one device and the chat is archived everywhere, because it's your account that changes, not the app. So if a chat disappeared from your laptop after you tidied up on your phone, that's why.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Archive or delete: which should you use?

I'd archive almost every time. An archived chat keeps its messages, files and retention period, stays searchable and can come back with one click. Deleting is for conversations you're sure you never want again, or ones containing something you'd rather not keep. If you use ChatGPT for work, archiving old client chats keeps the sidebar tidy without losing the history you might need later. My guide to ChatGPT custom instructions is a good next step if you're organising how you use it.

One quirk with scheduled tasks

If you use ChatGPT's scheduled tasks, be careful archiving the chat where a task posts its results. OpenAI warns that archiving that chat can cause the task to pause on a later run. If a scheduled task has gone quiet, check whether its chat ended up in the archive. My guide to how private ChatGPT is covers the other data controls on the same settings screen.

My verdict

Before you assume a chat is lost, search for it, then check Settings, Data controls, Archived chats. If it isn't in either place and you're definitely in the right account, it was deleted, and no one can bring it back. That's the whole reason I'd archive rather than delete whenever you're tidying up.

Frequently asked questions

Where are archived chats in ChatGPT?

In Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats or View archived chats, depending on your device.

How do I unarchive a chat in ChatGPT?

Open Archived chats in Data controls, find the conversation and select Unarchive to return it to your sidebar.

Do archived chats show up in ChatGPT search?

Yes. OpenAI says archived chats remain searchable, while deleted chats don't appear in search results.

Does archiving delete a ChatGPT chat?

No. Archiving only removes the chat from the sidebar. It keeps the same retention period as any other saved chat.

Can I recover a deleted ChatGPT chat?

No. OpenAI says deleted chats can't be restored in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support.
