Sims 4 Offline: How to Play The Sims 4 Without Internet

Yes, The Sims 4 is a single-player game you can play without internet, but you have to switch the EA app into offline mode while you're still connected. EA's community team says to open the EA app, click the three-line menu at the top left and choose Go offline, then disconnect.

The Sims 4 is one of those games that feels like it should work anywhere, and mostly it does. The trouble is the launcher. On PC, The Sims 4 runs through the EA app, and that app is the part that gets fussy when the internet disappears. Get the order right and you can build, live and drama-queen your Sims on a train or a dodgy hotel connection.

How to put The Sims 4 into offline mode

  1. Make sure you're connected to the internet first. This is the step people miss.
  2. Open the EA app and let it finish any updates for The Sims 4.
  3. Click the menu at the top left of the EA app, the icon with three horizontal lines.
  4. Choose Go offline. EA's community manager gives exactly these steps on EA's own forums.
  5. Launch The Sims 4 and load your save to check it opens.
  6. Now disconnect. Keep the EA app running rather than closing it, so you don't have to sign in again with no connection.

Why the first step matters: in the same EA forum thread, players point out that you have to be online to switch into offline mode, and that the EA app's settings can't be reached when the internet is already down. So if you know you're heading somewhere without broadband, switch over before you leave.

Playing The Sims 4 offline through Steam

If you got the game through Steam, it's listed there by Maxis as free to download, Single-player and Windows only, with a minimum of 26 GB of storage. If anything asks you to sign in when you launch it from Steam, treat it the same way: connect, follow the EA app steps above, then disconnect. Test the whole routine once at home, because a launcher that wants a password in a field with no signal is a miserable way to start a holiday.

Common problems with The Sims 4 offline

  • The EA app asks you to sign in with no internet. This usually means it was closed after you went offline. Reconnect briefly, even with a phone hotspot, sign in, choose Go offline again, then disconnect.
  • The game wants an update. Updates can't download offline. Do them at home before you travel.
  • Mods stop working after an update. That's an update problem rather than an offline one, but it often shows up at the same time. Keep a backup of your Mods folder.
  • The Gallery is greyed out. Normal when offline. It returns when you're back online.

Getting your Sims ready for a trip with no wifi

A little prep goes a long way. Update the game and all your packs at home, open your save once, then set the EA app to offline mode before you pack the laptop. Charge it fully, because The Sims 4 isn't a light game on a battery, and keep the 26 GB storage minimum in mind if you're also downloading films for the journey. If you share the laptop with children, it's worth checking the content in the build before you go.

Backing up your Sims 4 saves before you disconnect

Offline play is safe for saves, but a laptop that dies mid-trip isn't. Before you go, copy the saves folder from The Sims 4 folder in your Documents to a USB stick or another drive. It takes a minute and protects years of family trees. While you're there, back up the Mods and Tray folders too if you use custom content. Then, if an update or a crash ever goes wrong, you can put your world back exactly as it was without needing the internet at all.

If you want a life sim that needs no launcher

Some people simply want a cosy game that opens with no account check at all. On consoles, my list of life simulation games on the Switch covers several. On a PC, offline city builders for Windows 10 are another way to scratch the building itch with no launcher fuss. And if what you really want is privacy rather than a disconnected game, here's how appearing offline on Epic Games works for a different launcher.

My take on playing Sims 4 offline

The Sims 4 itself is happy offline. It's the EA app that needs handling. Follow EA's own route, the three-line menu and Go offline, while you're still connected, and leave the app running. If you only remember one thing, remember that offline mode is something you switch on before the internet disappears, not after.
