There are two official ways to get Canva Pro features for free: Canva Education, for eligible K-12 teachers and their students, and Canva for Nonprofits, for registered charities, which covers a team of up to 50 people. Everyone else uses Canva's free plan or pays, and so-called free Pro accounts shared online break Canva's rules.
Canva is the design tool a lot of small businesses, charities and teachers live in. The Pro features, like brand kits, premium images and transparent backgrounds, are where it really earns its keep. Here's who can get those free, straight from Canva's eligibility rules, and who can't.
Who can get Canva Pro features free
| Route | Who qualifies | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Canva Education | Certified K-12 teachers currently teaching, support staff, curriculum specialists, and their invited students | Free premium features for education |
| Canva for Nonprofits | Officially registered charitable nonprofits, independent of government | All Canva Pro premium features plus team tools for up to 50 members |
| Everyone else | Not eligible for either | Canva's free plan, or a paid plan |
Canva Education: the teacher route
Canva says Canva Education is free for eligible teachers and students, worldwide. It's for K-12, meaning primary and secondary education. Eligible roles include certified K-12 teachers who are currently teaching, learning support assistants, curriculum specialists, and teachers at technical or vocational schools serving primary or secondary students. You re-verify every 3 years.
- Sign up for Canva Education with your school email; a verified education domain gives access right away.
- No school email? Upload an approved document, such as a teaching licence or proof of employment.
- Canva reviews uploaded documents within 48 hours.
- Teachers from Japan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, the US and South Korea only need a copy of their teaching licence.
The catch: who Canva Education excludes
This list is longer than people expect. Canva Education isn't available to colleges and universities, their lecturers or their students (Canva points them to Canva for Campus instead). It also excludes certified teachers not currently teaching, public librarians, homeschool educators who aren't licensed or employed by a K-12 school, extracurricular organisations, nonprofits that don't deliver teaching, and parents of school-age children. If you're one of these, the education route isn't for you.
Canva for Nonprofits: the charity route
If you run or work for a registered charity, this is the generous one. Canva says eligible nonprofits get all the premium features of Canva Pro plus team and collaboration tools, free, for one team of up to 50 members. Extra seats are 50% off on Canva Enterprise. It also includes access to Affinity.
- Check your organisation is officially registered as a charitable nonprofit, such as a 501(c)(3) in the US, and independent of government.
- Have a Canva account; sign up free if you don't.
- Read the program terms.
- Submit the application form, or use Upgrade to Canva for Nonprofits under Billing.
- Canva aims to reply within 72 hours.
If you chose 'Non-profit or charity' when you signed up, Canva shows a homepage alert for 30 days with a direct link to the application.
Who Canva for Nonprofits excludes
- Government agencies and bodies (Canva has a separate government offering)
- Political organisations and campaign groups
- Schools and universities (they use the education and campus products)
- 501(c) groups other than 501(c)(3)
- Membership organisations whose main purpose is benefits for members
- For-profit companies, including B-Corps and social enterprises
- Grant-making and private foundations
- Fraternities, sororities and social clubs
Canva also says meeting the criteria doesn't guarantee approval; every application is reviewed.
What the free access includes
For nonprofits, Canva lists the main premium features: premium images, videos, music and graphics; downloading designs with transparent backgrounds; an upgraded Brand Kit with more colour palettes and your own fonts and logos; publishing designs as brand templates; and sharing designs and folders with your team. Those are the features most charities and small teams use every week, which is why the program is so valuable.
For teachers, the point is the classroom: you can invite students and work on designs together. Students can't sign up for Canva Education on their own; access comes through an eligible teacher.
If your nonprofit application is refused
Canva says it emails the reason. The most common is missing or unclear documentation, so reapply with a document type Canva accepts for your organisation and country. Check the eligibility list first, though: if your organisation is a type Canva excludes, such as a membership body or a grant-making foundation, a new document won't change the outcome.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
What about 'free Canva Pro' links?
You'll find shared team invites and 'free Pro forever' links online. They usually rely on someone else's education or nonprofit account, which breaks Canva's eligibility rules and can be removed without warning, taking your designs' premium elements with it. I wouldn't build a business's brand on that.
My verdict
If you're a K-12 teacher or a registered charity, apply: the free access is excellent. If you're a small business owner, start on the free plan and pay when the Pro features save you time.
