TikTok Monetization Requirements in Kenya

Straight answer: TikTok's own Creator Rewards Program is not available to accounts based in Kenya, so chasing "official" TikTok monetization requirements there is largely pointless right now. The real money for Kenyan creators comes from TikTok Shop affiliate commissions, brand deals, and the Live Gifts system, and each of those has its own separate set of rules you need to meet.

Why "TikTok monetization requirements in Kenya" is the wrong search

I'll be blunt because nobody else writing about this seems to be: TikTok's Creator Rewards Program, the thing that replaced the old Creator Fund, is restricted to a specific list of countries. The US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea and a handful of others are on that list. Kenya is not. I've seen dozens of blog posts list "10,000 followers, 100,000 views in 30 days, be 18+" as if Kenyan creators can just sign up and start earning from views like a creator in London. They can't. That program simply doesn't pay out to Kenyan accounts.

This matters because if you're a creator in Nairobi building a strategy around "hit the view threshold and TikTok pays me," you're building on sand. The uncomfortable bit that most creator advice skips is that TikTok has never promised equal monetization access worldwide, and it has no public timeline for adding Kenya. So the question isn't "what are the requirements," it's "what routes exist for me right now."

The three routes that do work in Kenya

There are three realistic ways Kenyan TikTok creators earn money today, and none of them are the Creator Rewards Program.

  • TikTok Shop affiliate commissions - you tag products in your videos and earn a commission (typically 5 to 20 percent depending on the seller) when someone buys through your link. TikTok Shop has been expanding across Africa and Kenya is one of the markets it has been testing and rolling out in, though availability can shift, so check your app's Shop tab directly rather than trusting a date I give you.
  • Live Gifts - viewers send virtual gifts during a livestream which convert to Diamonds, and Diamonds convert to real currency through TikTok's payout system. You need to be 18+, hit a minimum follower count (TikTok currently sets this around 1,000 followers in many regions, though it varies and changes), and go live regularly enough that people show up.
  • Brand partnerships - direct deals with Kenyan or international brands, paid in a flat fee or product plus fee. No TikTok approval needed at all. This is where most working Kenyan creators make their money.

A worked example: what this looks like for a real-sized account

Say you run a TikTok account focused on Nairobi street food and budget cooking, and you've built it to 18,000 followers with videos regularly pulling 40,000 to 60,000 views. Here's what your monetization picture would realistically look like:

  • Creator Rewards Program: 0 shillings, because Kenya isn't eligible no matter how good your numbers are.
  • TikTok Shop affiliate: if you tag three kitchen gadgets a week at an average sale price of 1,500 KES and a 10 percent commission, with a modest 2 percent click-to-purchase conversion from your views, that's roughly 1,200 purchases a month at the high end of a viral video, realistically closer to 40 to 80 sales a month for a mid-sized account, putting you at 6,000 to 12,000 KES monthly from affiliate alone.
  • Live Gifts: going live twice a week for an hour, with a loyal audience sending small gifts, could realistically bring in 3,000 to 10,000 KES a month once you've built a regular live habit, though this swings wildly and most creators underestimate how long it takes to build a live audience that tips.
  • One small brand deal a month with a local food delivery app or kitchenware brand, paid at 5,000 to 15,000 KES for a dedicated video, is often worth more than the other two combined.

Add it up and a active 18,000-follower Kenyan food account could land somewhere between 14,000 and 37,000 KES a month across all three routes. That's not life-changing money yet, but it's a real, repeatable income stream built on things TikTok allows in Kenya, rather than a program the platform hasn't switched on.

Step by step: setting yourself up

  1. Switch your account to a Business or Creator account in Settings so you can access analytics and the Creator tools that are available in your region.
  2. Check the TikTok Shop tab in your app directly; if it's live in Kenya for your account, apply to become an affiliate for categories you already post about.
  3. Hit and maintain the follower minimum for Live (check your own app, as thresholds vary and TikTok changes them without much warning) and go live on a consistent schedule, same two or three days a week, same time, every week.
  4. Build a one-page media kit with your follower count, average views, audience age range and top content themes, and start pitching Kenyan SMEs and East African brands directly via email or Instagram DM rather than waiting to be discovered.
  5. Track every shilling earned across the three routes in a simple spreadsheet so you know which one is worth your time after three months, because for most creators it's brand deals, not the platform-native tools.

Why TikTok hasn't switched Kenya on yet, and what to do about it

Platforms roll out payout infrastructure where banking rails, tax reporting and fraud risk are easiest to manage, and that usually means markets with mature digital payment systems and clear regulatory frameworks first. Kenya has M-Pesa and strong mobile money adoption, which should make this easier than it sounds, so there's a reasonable chance TikTok Shop and wider monetization tools expand there faster than in some other African markets. But "should" isn't "will," and I wouldn't build a content calendar around a feature that doesn't exist yet.

The more useful mindset, and the one almost nobody says plainly, is to treat TikTok as a traffic and audience-building tool first and a direct payment platform second, wherever you're based. Creators in countries where the Rewards Program does exist, like South Africa's neighbours in some monetization schemes, still often make more from brand deals and cross-platform traffic than from the fund itself. If you want a sense of how this plays out on another platform in the region, it's worth reading how YouTube monetization works for South African creators, because the pattern of "platform-native tools arrive late, creators monetize around them anyway" shows up there too.

What I'd prioritise if I were building a Kenyan TikTok account today

Stop refreshing the Creator Rewards Program eligibility page. Spend that time instead building an email list or WhatsApp community from your TikTok following, because that's an asset no platform policy change can take away from you. Pitch three brands a week even when you think your numbers are too small, because Kenyan SMEs are often more willing to work with a 5,000-follower creator at a fair rate than you'd expect, especially if you can show real engagement rather than just a big number. And get good at Live, because it's the one monetization route that's fully in your control and doesn't depend on TikTok deciding Kenya is ready yet.

Frequently asked questions

Can TikTok creators in Kenya join the Creator Rewards Program?

No, not currently. The Creator Rewards Program is limited to a specific list of eligible countries and Kenya is not one of them, so views alone will not generate payouts through that program.

How many followers do you need to monetize TikTok in Kenya?

There's no fixed follower count for overall monetization because it depends on which route you use; Live Gifts typically require a minimum around 1,000 followers (check your app, as it varies), while brand deals and TikTok Shop affiliate work have no official minimum at all.

Is TikTok Shop available in Kenya?

TikTok Shop has been expanding into African markets and availability can change, so the most reliable way to check is to look directly in the Shop tab of your own TikTok app rather than relying on a fixed date.

What's the most reliable way for Kenyan creators to earn from TikTok?

Brand partnerships and TikTok Shop affiliate commissions are currently the most reliable income sources for Kenyan creators, since they don't depend on TikTok's Creator Rewards Program being available in the country.
