Share an Instagram Story to WhatsApp Status: 3 Routes Compared (2026)

Instagram has no button that posts a Story straight to WhatsApp Status. Save your story to your phone from the three dots (More) menu, then open WhatsApp, go to Updates, add a status and pick the saved file from your gallery.

That save-then-post route is the only one that puts the story itself on your status. Instagram's share button can send a link into a WhatsApp chat, but never onto Status, and the cross-posting setting in Meta's Accounts Center runs the other way, from WhatsApp to Instagram.

Save it, then post it: step by step

  1. Open Instagram and tap your own story, either from your profile picture at the top of the feed or on your profile.
  2. Tap the three dots (More) on the story.
  3. Tap Save. The photo or video goes into your phone's gallery or camera roll.
  4. Open WhatsApp and go to the Updates tab.
  5. Tap the option to add a status (usually a camera or plus icon).
  6. Pick the saved story from your gallery.
  7. Add text or an emoji if you like, check who it's going to, and send it to your status.

If your story has several slides, save and post each one in turn; they'll show in the same order on your status if you add them in that order. If a menu name looks different in your version of either app, search the app's settings for the word Status or Save.

For how a status behaves once it's up, including taking one down if you post the wrong slide, see how to delete a WhatsApp status.

The three routes side by side

RouteWhat it doesWhat you get
Save and post as a statusPuts the story on your WhatsApp StatusThe full image or video, seen by the contacts your status privacy allows
Share the story link in a chatSends a link through WhatsApp to a person or groupA link they open in Instagram; public accounts only; never on Status
Accounts Center cross-postingLinks your WhatsApp to your InstagramWhatsApp status updates can also go to Instagram or Facebook stories, the opposite direction; depends on your app version

Route two, the link

Tap the share (paper plane) icon on a story and you'll see WhatsApp among the options. That sends a link to a chat, not a picture to your status. The person taps it and the story opens in Instagram. It only works for stories from public accounts, so if your account is private, the people you send it to won't be able to see it unless they already follow you.

Route three, the cross-posting setting

This trips people up. Meta's Accounts Center can connect WhatsApp to your Instagram and Facebook so that when you post a WhatsApp status, you can share it to your stories too. It's handy if WhatsApp is where you create first. It doesn't send Instagram stories to WhatsApp, and whether you see the option depends on your app versions and your account, so don't worry if it isn't there yet.

If what you're really after is more people seeing your story, WhatsApp is only one channel. There are better levers inside Instagram itself, covered in how to share an Instagram story to reach more people.

When the saved file isn't what you expected

The catch: licensed music in a story may not save with it. You can end up with a silent video, or a story that saved without the track you chose. If the sound matters, play the saved file in your gallery before you post it as a status, not after.

Here's how I'd handle the usual problems:

  • No music. Add a track on the WhatsApp side instead. My guide on how to add music to a WhatsApp status walks through it.
  • Softer quality. WhatsApp compresses photos and videos, so a saved story can look less crisp on Status than it did on Instagram. Bold text and simple backgrounds hold up best.
  • Text near the edges cut off. Keep important words towards the middle of the frame so they survive the move between apps.
  • Stickers that don't do anything. Polls, question boxes, links and mentions are Instagram features. On WhatsApp they're just part of the picture, so don't ask people to tap them.
  • Someone else's story. The Save option is for your own stories. Don't screen-record someone else's story and post it as your status without asking them first. If they say yes, credit them.

Timing works in your favour here. A WhatsApp status lasts 24 hours, the same as an Instagram story, so if you post both on the same day they disappear at roughly the same time and your two audiences see the same thing.

Making one story that works in both apps

If you know a story is heading to WhatsApp as well, it's worth building it with both places in mind from the start. Both apps show stories full screen and upright, so the shape carries over without any cropping work. The differences are in what people can do with it.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Say it in the picture. Put the key message, the date or the offer in big text on the story itself, so it still makes sense when the stickers stop being tappable.
  • Give a next step that works anywhere. "Reply to this to book" works on both apps, because both let people reply to a story or status with a message.
  • Skip the Instagram-only extras. A poll or a quiz looks odd on WhatsApp where nobody can vote. Save those for stories that stay on Instagram.
  • Use your own audio. A voiceover or the sound you recorded yourself is far more likely to come through the save than a licensed track.

None of this takes longer than making a normal story. It just means the second post looks deliberate rather than like a leftover.

Who this suits

This is a good habit for small businesses whose customers live on WhatsApp more than Instagram. A café, a salon or a tutor often has a WhatsApp contact list full of regulars who never open Instagram. One story, saved once and posted twice, reaches both groups for no extra work. Just remember your status is seen by your contacts, so check your status privacy settings in WhatsApp if your list mixes customers and family.

If it were my story

I'd save it as soon as it's up, play it back to check the sound, and post it to WhatsApp the same day. A few minutes, two audiences, and nobody misses the news.

Frequently asked questions

Can I share an Instagram story directly to WhatsApp Status?

No. There's no direct button. Save the story to your phone from the three dots menu, then add it as a status in WhatsApp's Updates tab.

Why is there no sound on my saved Instagram story?

Licensed music may not save with the story. Check the saved file before posting, and add music on the WhatsApp side if you need it.

Can I share someone else's Instagram story to WhatsApp?

You can send a link to a public account's story into a WhatsApp chat. Don't repost it as your status without asking the person first.

How long does a WhatsApp status stay up?

A WhatsApp status lasts 24 hours, the same as an Instagram story, so posting both on the same day keeps them in step.
