If a Snapchat friend has disappeared from your chat list, the usual reasons in Snapchat's help pages are that you blocked them, you or they removed the friend, you cleared the conversation, or the list was reordered. Snapchat says blocking removes their name from your Friends Feed. Chat order also changes with who you talk to most.
You open Snapchat to message someone and they're not where they were. It's a horrible little moment, especially if the person is a client, a collaborator or someone you've been chatting to for months.
Snapchat doesn't have one help article called 'my friend disappeared', so I've pulled together what its help pages say about each way a name can leave your list. Work through them in order, because the first few are quick to check.
Checking whether Snapchat just reordered your chat list
Start with the simplest explanation. Snapchat's help centre says the order your friends show up on the Chat screen is based on who you keep in touch with the most and who has reached out to you most recently. So a friend you haven't talked to in a while can slide down the list, and a long list can push them out of sight.
- Swipe right from the Camera to open the Chat screen.
- Scroll right down the list rather than looking only at the top.
- Use the search bar at the top of the app and type their name.
If their name appears in search, they're still your friend and it's just ordering.
If you blocked the Snapchat friend, or they blocked you
Snapchat's help article on blocking says that when you block a friend, their name disappears from your Friends Feed and any active one-on-one conversations are no longer visible to you. They also can't send you Snaps or Chats, and you won't see them in your Search results or Best Friends list.
Snapchat adds that the person you've blocked doesn't get a notification, but they might realise if they can no longer view your profile or contact you. The article describes what happens from your side. I couldn't find a Snapchat page that says what you would see if someone blocked you, so I won't guess.
If you or your friend removed the Snapchat friendship
Removing a friend takes them off your friends list. Snapchat says there isn't a way to remove multiple friends at once, so it's always a one-at-a-time action. Snapchat also says that if you want to add them again, you'll have to search for them.
Snapchat's help centre says removing, blocking or muting a friend should also take them off your Stories screen, which is another clue if you notice them missing from there too.
- Search for their username in the search bar at the top.
- Open their profile if it appears.
- Send a friend request again if you're no longer friends.
- Once you're friends again, you can tag them in a Story, and my guide to mentioning someone in a Snapchat Story shows how.
If you cleared the Snapchat conversation
Clearing a conversation takes it off your Chat feed without deleting the friendship. Snapchat's help centre gives these steps for iOS:
- Tap the gear button on your Profile screen to open Settings.
- Scroll to App and Privacy and tap My Privacy and Data.
- Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Data.
- Scroll down and tap Clear Conversations, where a cross next to a name clears that conversation.
On Android, Snapchat says to go to the same My Privacy and Data area and tap Clear Conversation. Snapchat says clearing a conversation will not delete any saved or sent content, so it's a tidy-up rather than a loss.

If Snapchat deleted the messages, not the friend
Sometimes the person is still on your list but the conversation looks empty. That's down to the deletion rules. Snapchat says Chats are deleted by default 24 hours after everyone in the conversation has viewed them, or 31 days after being sent, whichever is sooner. It also says you can keep a message longer if someone saves, replies or reacts to it.
Anyone in the conversation can change the Delete Chats setting, and everyone sees a status message when it changes. To check, press and hold the friend's name on the Chat screen, tap Chat and Notification Settings, then Delete Chats. If you want to take back something you sent, my guide to deleting messages on Snapchat explains how.
If you unblocked the Snapchat friend and your history is missing
Snapchat's blocking article says that if you unblock someone you may not see all of your previous Chat history with them. It also says saved messages may be removed when you and that person are no longer friends, including when you have blocked each other. That's a Snapchat rule, not a fault on your phone, and Snapchat's help pages don't describe a way to bring those messages back.
Quick checks if the Snapchat friend is still missing
- Update Snapchat to the newest version and reopen it.
- Search for the exact username, since display names can change.
- Check your blocked list in Settings.
- Look in Stories and Spotlight to see if they still post publicly.
If you've done all of that and you're sure nothing was blocked or removed, contact Snapchat Support through the help centre in the app and explain what you see. If a contact is making you uncomfortable, block and report the account, and contact the police if you feel in danger.
