How to Fix Twitch Stream Delay (Low Latency and OBS Settings)

To fix Twitch stream delay, switch on Low latency mode: in your Twitch dashboard open Preferences, then Stream, and choose Low latency, then restart your stream. Viewers can check their own delay under Video Stats in the player. If you added a delay on purpose in OBS or Streamlabs, turn it off in Advanced settings.

Stream delay is the gap between what you do on camera and when viewers see it. A few seconds is normal. Much more than that and chat answers feel strangely late, jokes land out of time and your community stops feeling live. I hear this one from streamers and from small brands who go live to launch a product.

I've read Twitch's own help pages on latency and delay. They separate two very different things: the natural lag of your stream, and a delay you or your software added on purpose. Knowing which one you've got is the whole fix.

Is your Twitch stream delay normal, or one you added?

Twitch explains that stream delay is a time buffer between your broadcast and viewers. People add it deliberately for competitive games, to stop stream sniping, or when they want a gap between something happening and viewers seeing it. If you or a previous setup switched that on, the lag you're seeing is a setting, not a fault.

  • Natural lag: Twitch has a Low latency mode to reduce it.
  • Added delay: a setting in your broadcast software, or in Stream Manager for Partners.
  • A slow connection: this shows up as buffering rather than a steady delay, and Twitch's stream health tools help here.

Turning on Twitch Low latency mode for your channel

Twitch says Low latency mode lets a broadcaster reduce the delay between their broadcast and their viewers so they can respond to chat more quickly. It says low latency is now on by default for most channels, but you can still switch it on or off.

  1. Go to your Twitch dashboard.
  2. Click the menu icon, then open the Preferences drop-down and choose Stream.
  3. Under Stream Key and Preferences at the top of the page, find the latency setting.
  4. Choose Low latency, not Normal latency.
  5. Restart your stream. Twitch says the change only takes effect after a restart.

If you recently turned low latency on and your broadcast has got worse, Twitch suggests switching it back off to see if that fixes the problem. Low latency isn't right for every setup.

Removing a stream delay you added in OBS Studio or Streamlabs

If your stream is delayed by a minute or so, check your broadcast software first. Twitch's stream delay guide lists where the setting sits.

OBS Studio

  1. Open OBS Studio and go to Settings.
  2. Select Advanced.
  3. Find the Stream Delay section.
  4. Untick Enable, or lower the number of seconds.
  5. Click Apply, then OK.

Streamlabs Desktop

  1. Open Streamlabs Desktop and visit Settings.
  2. Select the Advanced tab.
  3. Find the Stream Delay section.
  4. Turn it off or reduce the seconds.
  5. Click Done.

Twitch also mentions XSplit, where the delay sits under Tools, then Settings, then Outputs, on your active output. When stream delay is on, Twitch says your stream won't end immediately. It carries on for the length of the delay, so don't panic when the stream keeps running after you press stop.

Checking Twitch Partner stream delay in Stream Manager

Twitch says Partners can add up to 15 minutes of delay natively in Stream Manager, with no broadcast software setting needed. The steps are to visit Stream Manager, add the Stream Delay Quick-Action and set the delay. If your channel is a Partner channel and the delay seems stuck, check there as well as in your software.

Twitch says delay set through Stream Manager doesn't use memory on your machine, whereas delay in broadcast software buffers video and increases memory use. If your computer is struggling, that's a reason to keep any delay short.

How to check your Twitch stream delay as a viewer

If you're the one watching and the stream feels behind, Twitch gives you ways to check and change things from your side.

  1. Click the settings icon on the bottom right of the video player.
  2. Open Advanced.
  3. Turn on Video Stats. It shows Latency to Broadcaster and Latency Mode along with other stats.
  4. If the picture is choppy in low latency, toggle low latency off here to test it.

Twitch says low latency is supported on desktop Chrome, Firefox and Edge, the Twitch desktop app, the Android app, Android TV, Xbox One and PS4. On other devices you may see more lag, which is simply down to the platform.

Using Twitch Inspector to find the cause of stream lag

When the delay is caused by trouble sending your video, Twitch Inspector is the tool to try. Twitch says it lists your streams from the last 7 days and shows details such as bitrate, frame rate and unstable events. You sign in with your Twitch account and authorise it.

  • A high number of unstable events can mean your connection or settings are struggling.
  • Bitrate that jumps up and down is worth a look. Twitch says settings that don't match its recommendations can cause playback problems.
  • If your computer can't keep up with a high frame rate, Twitch suggests trying a lower one.

I'd keep the Inspector open in a second window the next time you go live, and compare it with Twitch's recommended settings.

Choosing the right Twitch stream delay for your channel

Twitch notes that for most competitive games a delay of 30 to 60 seconds is common, and that you should balance it against wanting to talk to chat in real time. For IRL streams, a delay can help keep your exact location private, though many IRL streamers skip it because live interaction matters to them.

If you're building a community, chat tools matter as much as delay. My guides to adding a mod on Twitch and banning someone on Twitch are worth a read, because a delayed stream makes moderation harder.

If your Twitch stream delay still won't improve

  1. Confirm the latency mode in your dashboard and restart the stream.
  2. Check OBS, Streamlabs or XSplit for a delay setting.
  3. Check Stream Manager if you're a Partner.
  4. Look at Video Stats to see the latency you're getting.
  5. Review Twitch Inspector for unstable events.
  6. Contact Twitch Support if it's still wrong, with details of what you've tried.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix Twitch stream delay?

Turn on Low latency in your dashboard under Preferences, then Stream, and restart your stream. Also check your broadcast software for a delay you added on purpose.

How do I check my delay on Twitch?

In the video player, open Settings, then Advanced, and turn on Video Stats to see Latency to Broadcaster and Latency Mode.

Why does my stream keep running after I stop?

Twitch says when stream delay is on, your stream continues for the length of the delay before it ends.

How much delay can I add on Twitch?

Twitch says Partners can add up to 15 minutes in Stream Manager. Other streamers set a delay in seconds in software such as OBS Studio.

Does low latency work on every device?

No. Twitch lists desktop Chrome, Firefox, Edge, the desktop app, Android, Android TV, Xbox One and PS4 as supported.

Does stream delay lower video quality?

Twitch says adding delay doesn't directly affect video or audio quality, but it does increase memory use in broadcast software.
