Ghana isn't named on KDP's payment options page, so it falls under the Other section, where KDP says it likely can't send direct deposit or wire to your bank and lists a cheque. The IRS treaty table has no entry for Ghana, and KDP names 30% US withholding as the default, so the tax profile matters.
Ghanaian authors tend to ask me two things at once about Amazon KDP: will it pay me at all, and will half of it disappear in tax. I've read KDP's help pages on payments, bank details and tax, and checked the IRS treaty table for Ghana. The honest answer to both is 'it depends on paperwork', and it's worth knowing why. I'm not giving tax or legal advice, so ask a local accountant about specifics.
Start with the withholding default KDP names
KDP's tax page says eBook sales, and print sales on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.com.au and Amazon.ca, are subject to 30% US tax withholding. That's the starting point, before any reduced rate is claimed.
The IRS treaty Table 1 has no entry for Ghana. I checked the PDF and there's no Ghana row, so I can't point you to a treaty figure. Don't borrow a rate from a Nigerian or Kenyan guide. Each country's row stands alone.
Using a Ghanaian tax number in the profile
KDP says that if you don't have a US taxpayer number, you may enter the income tax identification number issued to you by the tax authority in your country of residence. For a Ghanaian author, that means the number from home, entered exactly as issued.
Take the form slowly. Names and numbers that don't match your other documents are a common reason an application stalls, and it's easier to fix before you submit than after.
Where Ghana sits on the payment table
KDP's payment options page lists countries against direct deposit, check and wire. Ghana isn't named. For anywhere unlisted, the page's fallback is that KDP probably can't pay by direct deposit or wire to a bank in your location.
What it does list in that fallback is check, mostly in US dollars, with pounds for the UK store and Canadian dollars for the Canadian one. KDP also notes that checks have minimum payment thresholds and are slower than electronic methods.
Getting the cheque address right
KDP says it can take up to 30 days after the payment date for a check to reach the address in your KDP account. If it's a business or family address, make sure someone can sign for or collect post there. A missed delivery adds weeks.
KDP says that if earnings are below a threshold, it keeps a running total and pays once the threshold is met. So a slow first few months isn't a sign anything is broken.
| What I checked | What the official pages say for Ghana |
|---|---|
| On KDP's payment table | Not named |
| Listed fallback method | Paper cheque |
| IRS Table 1 | No entry for Ghana |
| Default US withholding named by KDP | 30% |
| Tax number if no US one | The one your Ghanaian tax authority issued |
Exchange rates and monthly timing
KDP says royalties are paid every month, approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which the sale was reported, and 90 days for Expanded Distribution. Where a payment is made in a different currency, Amazon converts at an exchange rate determined by Amazon, and the converted amount is inclusive of all fees associated with the conversion.

A short checklist before you publish from Ghana
- Read the payment options page and see for yourself whether Ghana has been added since I looked.
- Gather your tax number from the Ghanaian authority and a postal address where cheques can safely arrive.
- Complete the tax profile in one sitting and save a copy of every answer you gave.
- Check the first royalty report against what arrives, and keep both records.
None of that costs money, and it saves arguments later. If something on KDP's pages has changed, trust the pages over this one, because they're the source for every payment fact here.
Bank details, if KDP asks for them
KDP says that after you add a bank account it checks the details within five business days, and if it can't validate them it emails you more information. Even if you don't expect a deposit, don't ignore that email.
Scams using the Amazon name in Ghana
- KDP doesn't ask you to pay to release royalties.
- Don't share mobile money PINs or bank codes with anyone claiming to be Amazon.
- Be careful with people who offer to cash cheques or manage a KDP account for a cut.
- Be careful with courses promising a fixed monthly income from publishing.
Other tools for receiving foreign money
KDP pays only by the methods on its own page, so other tools sit alongside it. I'm not ranking them. You can read what Wise says for Ghana, how Payoneer works for Ghanaian users and what PayPal allows in Ghana, then decide what suits your other income.
So, does Amazon KDP work in Ghana?
You can publish, and royalties can be earned, but on KDP's own pages the listed route is a cheque and the tax default is high until your profile says otherwise. Be patient, keep copies of everything, and treat the first royalty report as the real test.
