Wise in Bangladesh: bKash, Banks and Incentive (2026)

Wise's help pages say a sender can pay taka into any Bangladeshi bank account, or to bKash and Nagad wallets, with business transfers excluded. Banks take up to 995,000 BDT per transfer. The catch is that Wise says you can't top up taka from a bank, and the page I read about holding money doesn't list Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi freelancers have been through a lot of back and forth about which payment tools work, so I'd rather quote Wise than rumours. I've read its guide to taka transfers, its currency list and its page on where you can hold money. The guide has one section I haven't seen on any other country's page, and it matters if your family sends money home.

Three ways taka can reach you

According to Wise's BDT guide, a sender can pay taka to any bank account, any bKash account and any Nagad account in Bangladesh. For a bank, the sender needs your full name, bank and branch details and account number, which Wise says should be a maximum of 17 digits. For bKash or Nagad, they need your mobile number in international format starting with 880.

Wise gives an example: if the mobile number is 01234567890, the sender enters 8801234567890. That is the single most common slip I'd expect, because people paste the local number straight in. Send your client the international version so they don't have to guess.

Bank limit versus wallet limit

What I checkedWhat Wise says for Bangladesh
Bank account transferUp to 995,000 BDT per transfer
Repeat payments to one bank accountMultiple transfers allowed
bKash and Nagad per day250,000 BDT
bKash and Nagad per month450,000 BDT
Business transfers to BDTNot possible
Bank arrival timeUp to 3 working days after conversion

The wallet figures are the ones to watch. A monthly cap of 450,000 BDT is plenty for small invoices and tight for a studio billing a few clients. If you expect larger sums, a bank account is the route that Wise gives the higher single-transfer figure for.

Timing is slower than in some other countries

Wise says that once it has received and converted your money, it can take up to 3 working days to arrive in the recipient's bank account. Conversion itself can take up to 2 working days, so a payment could take several working days from the sender pressing pay. Wise says it always shows an estimate when the sender sets up the transfer, and I'd ask clients to screenshot it.

The cash incentive for inward remittances

This is the part that's unique to Bangladesh. Wise's guide describes a government programme called the Cash Incentive for Inward Wage Remittances. It says that if you're a Bangladesh national working abroad, you can get a 2.5% cash incentive on money sent back to Bangladesh. Wise says it sends the incentive to the recipient, not the sender.

On the paperwork, Wise says that if you're sending up to 500,000 BDT you don't need to provide documents. Above that, the recipient's bank asks the recipient to send documents about the sender, such as a passport, an appointment letter, a certificate from the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training, or a trade licence copy where the money comes from a business. Wise says recipients should send these to their bank within 5 working days.

I'd treat this as a family-remittance matter, not a freelancer one. Whether a particular payment qualifies is for the bank and the programme to say, so please ask your bank rather than assuming.

Why a Wise balance isn't the plan here

Wise's list of currencies puts BDT in the group you can only send to, by local transfer within Bangladesh. The page I read about where you need to live to hold money doesn't list Bangladesh. And the BDT guide says you can send money from BDT only if you already hold BDT in a Wise account, which you can add to by converting another currency you hold with Wise. It also says you can't add BDT, or send BDT into your account, from a bank account or another outside payment method.

Put together, that suggests Wise is a delivery route for foreign money arriving in Bangladesh, not somewhere you'd keep a balance. Check the app for what's open to you, because Wise changes things from time to time.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

One more point on the business rule. If a client is a company and wants to pay you through its business account, Wise's guide says that route isn't available for taka, so the client would need to use a personal route or another tool. It's worth raising this early in a project, not on the day the invoice is due.

Practical steps for a Bangladeshi freelancer

  1. Choose whether payments go to a bank account, bKash or Nagad, based on the size of the invoice.
  2. Give your client the account details, or the 880 version of your mobile number.
  3. Keep wallet payments inside the daily and monthly caps.
  4. Ask clients to pay as an individual, since Wise says business transfers to BDT aren't possible.
  5. Allow up to 3 working days after conversion for bank payments.

Other ways Bangladeshis get paid from abroad

Wise is one of several tools, and every freelancer I know uses more than one. I've written about how Payoneer works in Bangladesh and what PayPal offers in Bangladesh, and each handles withdrawals in its own way. For a nearby example of a country with a very different Wise setup, Wise in Pakistan is worth a look.

Please check with your bank about anything it needs for incoming foreign payments, and ask a local accountant about tax. I can't advise on either.
