Amazon KDP in Kenya: Shillings, Tax and Timing (2026)

KDP's payment options page lists Kenya for direct deposit in KES, with no check or wire option, so royalties can go to a Kenyan bank account in shillings. The catch is tax: the IRS treaty table has no row for Kenya, and KDP's default withholding for non-US publishers is 30% on certain sales.

Kenyan writers ask me whether KDP is worth the paperwork, and the payout is usually the first worry. I've read KDP's own help pages on payments, bank accounts and tax, plus the IRS treaty table, to see what they say about Kenya in particular. The payment side looks friendlier than many people expect, and the tax side is where you'll want a local accountant. I'm not giving tax advice.

Kenyan shillings straight to your bank

On KDP's payment options page, Kenya is listed with direct deposit in KES, the Kenyan shilling. The check and wire columns for Kenya are marked not available, so direct deposit is the one method you'd set up.

KDP calls direct deposit the recommended option. It says it usually has no minimum payment threshold and is the fastest, secure way to receive royalty payments. The thresholds page says the same thing in plainer terms: EFT payments have no threshold.

Kenya is missing from the IRS treaty table

This is the part that surprises people. I checked the IRS treaty Table 1, the table KDP's tax help points to for reduced rates, and it has no row for Kenya. So it lists no treaty royalty rate for Kenya.

KDP says non-US publishers' royalties are subject to 30% US tax withholding for eBook sales on Amazon.com and print sales on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.com.au and Amazon.ca, unless a reduced treaty rate applies. I can't tell you whether a reduced rate will apply to you. Ask a Kenyan accountant, and complete the tax interview with accurate answers.

The taxpayer number question

KDP says that if you don't have a US TIN, you may enter the income tax identification number issued by the tax authority in your country of residence. It also says a reduced withholding rate won't apply until you provide a TIN. For Kenyan residents, the local number would be the one issued by the tax authority at home.

The tax interview can be completed without a number if you're still applying for one, according to KDP. You'd retake it after you receive the number.

Keeping your tax form alive

KDP says a W-8 expires on the last day of the third succeeding calendar year after you sign it, and that when it expires the rate reverts to 30%. Put a reminder in your calendar for the renewal. It's a small job that can save a nasty surprise on a royalty statement.

KDP also says the rate in your tax profile should match the IRS treaty rates if you're claiming treaty benefits, and that you may need to review your W-8 inputs if it doesn't. With no Kenya row in the IRS table, ask your accountant what to enter rather than guessing.

How soon the money lands

KDP says royalties are paid every month, approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which the sale was reported. After the payment date, direct deposit takes 1 to 5 business days to appear in your bank account. Wire is slower at 5 to 10 days, but that route isn't listed for Kenya.

Plan on a gap of about two months between a sale and cash. If you're relying on the first royalties for a bill, that gap is worth knowing about now.

Matching your name to your Kenyan bank record

KDP's bank page says the account holder name must match the information your bank has on file. It can't include initials at the beginning or end, and it needs at least two words. Check your bank's records first, since a mismatch is the quickest way to a failed deposit.

KDP says it checks the details to confirm it can make payments to the account within five business days, and emails you if validation fails. You'll also need two-step verification to add or delete an account.

What happens when a sale isn't priced in shillings

Most of your readers will pay in dollars, pounds or euros. KDP says where royalties are paid in a currency other than the sale currency, Amazon converts them at its own exchange rate, with conversion fees included. So the shilling figure in your bank can differ from the headline royalty in the report.

Other tools Kenyan freelancers compare

KDP itself only pays by the methods on its table and says PayPal and Amazon Payments are not available. If you earn from other places too, my guides to PayPal in Kenya and Payoneer in Kenya explain what those services say for Kenyan users. For a similar KDP route in the region, see how KDP pays in South Africa.

Scams to watch for

  • KDP doesn't charge a fee to release royalties.
  • Never share M-Pesa PINs, bank codes or one-time passwords with a so-called Amazon agent.
  • Add or change bank details only inside your own KDP account.
  • Avoid any course or service promising a fixed KDP income.

So, does Amazon KDP work in Kenya?

Yes, on KDP's own table it does, with direct deposit in shillings. The things to prepare for are the tax withholding question, the monthly lag and an exact bank name match. Your results depend on the book and on your readers, so keep expectations modest.
