Amazon KDP in India: Can You Get Paid in Rupees? (2026)

Yes, Amazon KDP pays authors with Indian bank accounts. According to KDP's payment options page, direct deposit arrives in rupees for Amazon.in and most other Amazon stores. The catch is slower timing, and Amazon.in royalties are subject to ten percent Singaporean tax withholding, so read the tax pages before you plan your income.

Amazon KDP India is a search I see a lot from people who want to publish a book and be paid in rupees without a fuss. I've read KDP's own help pages and the IRS treaty table so you don't have to piece it together. I'm not a tax adviser, so use this as a map and check the details with a local accountant.

Getting paid in rupees: the route KDP gives Indian bank accounts

KDP's payment options page lists India as a bank location with direct deposit, also called electronic funds transfer. The currency shown is INR, which means rupees, for Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.in and most of the other Amazon stores. The one exception on that table is Amazon.com.br, where royalties are paid by wire in US dollars.

KDP says direct deposit is its recommended method because it usually has no minimum payment threshold. It also warns that some local banks need extra documents before they accept international electronic payments, and some apply their own thresholds, so ask your bank what it expects before your first royalty lands.

The slower clock for Indian banks

Here's the detail that surprises people. KDP's "When will I get paid?" page says royalties are paid every month, roughly 60 days after the end of the month in which the sale was reported. Then it adds a separate line: if your bank is located in India, direct deposit can take 7-10 business days past the payment date to show up, compared with 1-5 business days for other locations.

So a sale can feel like it takes a long time to reach you. Plan your cash flow around that, and don't treat a missing deposit as a problem until the payment date plus the full 7-10 business days has passed.

Amazon.in royalties and the Singaporean withholding

This is the India-specific catch. KDP's tax withholding page says royalty payments for sales on Amazon.in are subject to 10% Singaporean tax withholding. For non-Singapore publishers, KDP says you may qualify for a reduced rate under a treaty between your country and Singapore, but it also states that authors located in the US and India are unlikely to qualify for a reduced rate.

I'd read that as: if you expect big sales on the Indian store, build the withholding into your maths before you promise yourself a number. KDP's page is the place to check the current wording, and a local accountant can tell you how it sits with your own tax return.

GST on eBooks sold in India

KDP also explains that eBooks sold to customers in India are subject to an 18% Goods and Services Tax. List prices you set for Amazon.in include GST, and KDP deducts GST from the list price before it calculates your royalty. You don't add GST yourself, but you should know the royalty is worked out on the price after it comes off.

US tax forms and the treaty rate for Indian authors

Separately from Singapore, KDP's withholding page says royalty payments for eBook sales on Amazon.com and print book sales on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.com.au and Amazon.ca are subject to 30% US tax withholding for non-US persons. You may be eligible for a reduced rate if your country has an income tax treaty with the United States.

The IRS treaty table lists India at 15 in the Copyrights column under Royalties, citing Article 12. To claim a treaty rate, KDP says you have to provide a tax identification number. If you have a US number you must use it. If you don't, you may enter the income tax number issued by your country's tax authority.

KDP also says your W-8 form expires on the last day of the third calendar year after you sign it, and the rate drops back to 30% if you let it lapse. Put a reminder in your diary. Which Indian number to enter is a question for your accountant, not me.

Publishing in Hindi and other Indian languages

If you write in an Indian language, KDP's help page says you can publish eBooks in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi and Gujarati. It also says paperback publishing for those languages isn't available. It recommends English for book details such as the title and author name, because Indian scripts may not display correctly in every Amazon website, app or email.

What if direct deposit is slow or your bank is difficult?

KDP says PayPal and Amazon Payments aren't offered, so you can't switch to those. If your bank adds fees or delays, the realistic move is to talk to the bank, or open an account that handles foreign payments well. Some authors use a multi-currency account for the rest of their freelance income. My guides on how Wise works for people in India and Payoneer for Indian freelancers explain those options, but KDP itself pays only into a bank account on its list.

Scams that borrow the KDP name

Anyone asking you to pay a fee to "release" KDP royalties isn't Amazon. Log in at the official KDP site, check your Payments Report there, and ignore messages that push you to a different page or a messaging app. KDP will never need your bank password.

So, does KDP work from India?

Yes, it does, in rupees, straight into an Indian bank account. The trade-offs are the longer bank timing, the Singaporean withholding on Amazon.in sales and the US tax forms you must complete. Do the tax questionnaire carefully, keep your numbers handy, and ask an accountant how the withholding fits your own return.
