Payoneer in Australia: AUD Account, Withdrawals and Tax (2026)

Australia is one of the few places where Payoneer's own fees page names a same-country withdrawal route, listing it at 1.50 US dollars to a local bank in local currency. Payoneer also offers an Australian dollar receiving account that works like a local one. The Tax Office still expects residents to report foreign income.

Most guides to Payoneer are written for people in countries where a bank transfer from overseas is a headache. Australia is different, and that changes the questions. You aren't asking whether it works. You're asking whether it beats what your bank already does, and what the Tax Office expects you to report. I've read Payoneer's pages and the ATO's guidance, and here's what they say.

The Australian dollar account Payoneer offers

Payoneer says it offers an Australian dollar local receiving account that works like a local Australian bank account. In its words, anyone with an Australian bank account can pay you by local bank transfer. That's handy if your clients are in Australia and don't want to send an international payment.

It also says international payments to Australian dollar receiving accounts are free. The currency appears on Payoneer's list of 13 local receiving account currencies and in its separate SWIFT wire list too. As with every country, Payoneer notes that receiving accounts aren't actual bank accounts.

The withdrawal route Payoneer names for Australia

Here's the detail that stands out. Payoneer's fees page lists withdrawals to a bank account in the same country, in local currency, in supported countries at 1.50 US dollars, and the example list reads: all EU countries, USA, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada. Australia is named.

That's a flat line rather than the percentage range shown for other destinations. For withdrawals to a recipient's local currency that fall outside that route, the same page lists 1.2% to 4%, with a minimum fee of up to 20.00 US dollars or equivalent in some countries. So the Australian dollar balance going to an Australian bank is the cheapest path on paper. A balance in another currency is a different story.

Licensing and what the word means

Payoneer says it's licensed in major financial jurisdictions, listing the US, EU, UK, HK, JP, AU and SG. AU is Australia. That's Payoneer's own statement, and it doesn't tell you how a particular product is regulated. If that matters to you, ask Payoneer which entity holds your account and read its terms.

What the Tax Office expects you to report

The Australian Taxation Office says that as an Australian resident you're taxed on your worldwide income. It says you must report all income you receive from foreign business activities on your Australian tax return.

It also says you must convert all your foreign income, foreign deductions and foreign tax paid into Australian dollars, and that you may qualify for an Australian foreign income tax offset if you paid foreign tax. So the fact that a client paid you through Payoneer, rather than straight into your bank, doesn't take the income out of your return. I'm not a tax adviser, so ask a registered tax agent about your own position.

Why some people look at Payoneer when Australian banks exist

Payoneer's own article says most Australian banks charge a flat monthly fee of around 20 Australian dollars for business transaction accounts, and international payments can cost anything from 10 to 30 Australian dollars each. Those are Payoneer's figures about banks, so treat them as one side's view, and compare with your bank's published schedule.

The same article says non-residents must first get an ABN or ACN by registering with the Australian tax office and ASIC before opening a business bank account. If you're based abroad but trading with Australia, that's the hurdle Payoneer says its receiving account sidesteps. If you're an Australian resident, you probably have a bank account already.

When the Australian dollar balance isn't the whole story

Many Australians who use Payoneer are paid by overseas clients in US dollars, pounds or euros rather than in Australian dollars. Payoneer's fees page lists receiving through an account in a currency that isn't your local one at 1% with a minimum of 1.00 US dollars or equivalent, while a local-currency receiving account is listed as free.

So the currency your client chooses changes the cost, and it's worth asking before they send anything. Payoneer also says you can link several bank accounts and withdraw in the currency you earned, which avoids an unnecessary conversion. Whether your Australian bank will hold that currency is a question for the bank.

Timing and costs you won't see on the headline page

Payoneer says most withdrawals typically reach your local account within two business days, with a wider range of one to three business days in its FAQ. It also says intermediary banks on wire transfers may take their own fees, typically averaging 20-30 US dollars or equivalent. A local transfer avoids that, which is a good reason to ask clients to use your Australian dollar details.

  1. Ask the client which currency they'll pay in.
  2. If they're in Australia, give them the local Australian dollar details.
  3. Withdraw to an Australian bank in Australian dollars where you can.
  4. Record each payment and convert it as the ATO describes for your return.

If you're weighing this against other tools, my comparison of Wise and Revolut for freelancers covers two names that come up, and Payoneer for people in India shows how different the picture is where local rules bite harder.
