PayPal in Kenya: Withdrawing to Equity Bank (2026)

PayPal's Kenya page says you can withdraw funds to your Equity account through the Equity app and Equity Online. Equity says you can use a shilling or dollar account, up to ten thousand US dollars a transfer, though PayPal's own partner article says processing can take up to three days.

Kenya is one of the easier African countries for PayPal, mainly because of one bank partnership. If you've seen "withdraw PayPal to Equity" advice and wondered whether it's current, I've gone through PayPal's Kenya pages and Equity Bank's own PayPal page to see what they say.

Equity is the route PayPal itself points to

The PayPal Kenya home page carries a banner that reads Withdraw Funds Instantly to your Equity Account. It adds that you can access your PayPal balance through the Equity Mobile App and Equity Online. So this isn't a rumour passed around by freelancers: PayPal says it on its own Kenya page.

Equity Bank Kenya has a PayPal page of its own. It describes the steps as logging in, selecting the PayPal option, linking your PayPal account, and withdrawing funds instantly to your linked Equity Bank account, in either Kenyan shillings or US dollars. Your PayPal balance then appears on your Equity dashboard.

That detail about two account currencies is useful. If you're paid in US dollars and have a US dollar account at Equity, you may avoid converting to shillings at all, and if you'd rather have shillings you can choose that. Which suits you depends on when you need to spend the money.

Verifying with an Equity card

Equity says that to verify your PayPal account you link an Equity Bank issued debit, prepaid or credit card. If you link it from inside PayPal, PayPal charges 1.95 US dollars, which is later refunded upon successful verification. A code appears in your transaction details, and Equity says you can read it in an SMS notification, on your statement, or by contacting its customer support.

Limits and speed

Equity says its PayPal service covers transactions up to 10,000 US dollars per transfer with no daily limit. It describes withdrawals as instant. PayPal's own partner service article is more cautious: it says processing takes between 2 hours to 3 calendar days, depending on the amount. When two pages disagree on timing, I'd plan on the longer window for anything urgent and treat instant as a pleasant bonus.

How the partner service works in general

PayPal's third-party partner service article lists Kenya among the regions that offer the service, which links your PayPal account to a local bank account or wallet through a licensed partner. It also says you can withdraw only up to your available US dollar balance, so if you hold another currency you convert it to US dollars first.

What PayPal's fee page lists for Kenya

What I checkedWhat PayPal's fee page says for Kenya
Bank withdrawal above 20,000.00 KESNo fee when no currency conversion is involved
Bank withdrawal below 20,000.00 KES105.00 KES
Converting a balance3.0% in the Middle East and Africa group

The pattern is the same as in other countries: a flat charge for small withdrawals, nothing for larger ones, and a percentage when currency conversion is involved. The practical lesson is to withdraw less often and in larger amounts, and to keep dollars as dollars until you need shillings.

A sensible routine for freelancers

Here's the routine I'd suggest, based on what the pages say. Open the Equity account first, then link PayPal through the Equity app so the balance shows on your dashboard. Verify with your Equity card so your PayPal account is in good standing. Then decide which currency you want the money in before the first withdrawal, because converting twice is the quickest way to lose a slice of your earnings.

When a payment arrives, don't rush to withdraw the same day unless you need to. Waiting until the amount clears the threshold in the fee table can save the small-withdrawal charge. If you ever see a transfer take longer than the instant claim suggests, remember PayPal's own article gives a window of up to three calendar days, so a short delay isn't automatically a problem.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Finally, keep records. Save your withdrawal confirmations and the invoices behind them. If your bank, an accountant or the revenue authority ever asks where the money came from, a tidy folder answers the question in seconds.

How Kenya compares with its neighbours

West Africa looks different. PayPal's pages tell new Nigerian customers to link a partner bank before they can receive money, and I've written that up on the PayPal Nigeria page. Kenya has the named bank partnership that makes withdrawing straightforward. If you work with Nigerian clients or colleagues, it's useful to know the two countries aren't the same.

If a client payment looks stuck

Sometimes the delay is on the sender's side rather than yours. Why an invoice payment can show as pending on PayPal goes through the usual causes, so you can tell a client what to check. For tax on money you earn from abroad, ask a Kenyan accountant, because I can't advise on that.
