Is MetaMask Safe? Recovery Phrase, Fake Support and Privacy (2026)

MetaMask is a real, widely used crypto wallet built by ConsenSys and running since 2016. It's a self-custody wallet, so its safety depends heavily on you: MetaMask can't recover your wallet, anyone with your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase controls your funds, and fake support agents and lookalike apps are the main way people lose money.

If you've ever bought an NFT, used a crypto app in your browser or been told to connect your wallet, you've probably met MetaMask. It's one of the most common ways into crypto, which is exactly why scammers love it. Here's what the official support pages and the public record say, and the habits that keep a wallet safe.

Who makes MetaMask and what it does

According to Wikipedia, MetaMask is a software cryptocurrency wallet developed by ConsenSys. It lets you hold tokens and connect to apps on Ethereum and other compatible networks. It launched in 2016 as open-source software, and its licence changed to a custom proprietary one in 2020.

You can use it as a browser extension or as a mobile app for iOS and Android, and the mobile versions went public in 2020. Wikipedia says MetaMask reports over 100 million users worldwide. That scale is reassuring in one way and worrying in another: it's a big, established product, and it's also the biggest target.

Why MetaMask works differently from an exchange

This is the most important thing to understand. MetaMask is a self-custody wallet. There's no MetaMask account holding your money for you, no password reset and no customer service team that can reverse a transfer. Your access lives in your Secret Recovery Phrase.

If you're used to apps like a bank or a crypto exchange, that's a big shift. My explainer on hot wallets versus cold wallets covers where a browser wallet like MetaMask sits and when people move larger amounts to a hardware device.

What MetaMask says about your Secret Recovery Phrase

MetaMask's support centre is blunt about this. The Secret Recovery Phrase is a unique 12-word phrase created when you set up the wallet. Anyone who can access it can control your funds. MetaMask can't recover your wallet for you, and if you lose access to the phrase, your funds can't be recovered.

Its storage advice is just as clear: don't keep it somewhere easily hacked, such as a cloud-saved document, write it down by hand, and double-check that every word is in the right order.

What I checkedWhat MetaMask's own pages and Wikipedia say
Who builds it?ConsenSys
How long has it run?Since 2016

Should I ever share my phrase? No, not even with someone claiming to be MetaMask Support
Is there a fee for swaps?MetaMask Swaps charges a 0.875% service fee, per Wikipedia

The MetaMask scams to watch for

Most people who lose crypto with MetaMask don't get hacked in a technical sense. They're talked into handing over access. The common patterns:

  • Fake support: someone in a chat, comment or direct message offers to fix a problem and asks for your phrase. MetaMask's support pages say never give it to anyone, even if they say they're from MetaMask Support.
  • Lookalike apps and extensions: copies of MetaMask in app stores or browser stores, or sites advertised above the real one in search results.
  • Phishing sites: pages that ask you to connect your wallet and then approve a transaction that drains it.
  • Airdrop and giveaway bait: free tokens that need you to sign something or visit a strange link.

If a message is urgent, offers something free or asks for your phrase, it's a scam. Close it.

How to set up MetaMask more safely

  1. Install it only from the official MetaMask website or by following its link to the official app and browser stores.
  2. Write your Secret Recovery Phrase on paper and store it somewhere private; never photograph it or save it in the cloud.
  3. Use a separate wallet with small amounts for trying new apps.
  4. Read every transaction request before you approve it, and reject anything you don't understand.
  5. Remove app connections and token permissions you no longer use.

MetaMask, privacy and data

Wikipedia notes that MetaMask has been criticised over default analytics settings that share some user data, which you can turn off. It's also been criticised for relying on Infura, a service ConsenSys bought in 2019, which some see as a central point in a system meant to be decentralised. If privacy matters to you, check the analytics settings after you install.

Fees and costs in MetaMask

Using MetaMask itself doesn't make transfers free. Networks charge their own fees for transactions, and the built-in MetaMask Swaps feature adds a service fee, which Wikipedia puts at 0.875%. Compare that with other ways to swap before you assume the in-wallet button is the right choice. My roundup of crypto apps explains the different routes in.

So, is MetaMask safe?

MetaMask is a legit, long-running wallet from an established company, and it isn't a scam. The risk sits with how it's used: one leaked recovery phrase or one bad approval can empty a wallet, and nobody can undo it. Treat the phrase like the keys to a safe, ignore anyone offering help in your messages and keep larger amounts somewhere more secure. None of this is investment advice, just the basics for keeping control of what you own.
