To verify your YouTube account, go to youtube.com/verify while signed in, choose text message or voice call, enter your phone number and type in the code Google sends. The detail people miss: YouTube says one phone number can be linked to no more than 2 channels per year.
You've filmed a twenty-minute tutorial, hit upload and YouTube refuses it, or the custom thumbnail button is greyed out. Very often the fix is the same: your channel hasn't been verified with a phone number yet, so YouTube is holding back features it keeps for verified channels.
It takes a couple of minutes and it's one of the first jobs I'd do on any new business or creator channel. Below I'll cover the phone step YouTube's help describes, what it switches on, the extra ID or video check for advanced features, and what to try when the code never turns up.
Verifying a YouTube account with your phone number
YouTube's help page keeps this short. Here's the route:
- Sign in to the Google account that owns your channel.
- Go to youtube.com/verify in your browser.
- Choose whether you want the code by text message or by voice call.
- Enter your phone number and send the request.
- Type the code Google sends you into the box and submit it.
Once it's accepted, YouTube treats the channel as phone verified. If you manage more than one channel, check you're signed into the right one first. My guide on switching between YouTube accounts helps if you're juggling a personal channel and a business one.
What phone verification switches on for your YouTube channel
Without verification you've got what YouTube calls standard features. A verified phone number moves you up to intermediate features, which according to YouTube's help include:
- Uploading videos longer than 15 minutes.
- Adding custom thumbnails.
- Live streaming from a computer.
- Creating a podcast.
- Appealing copyright claims.
For most small businesses, the 15-minute cap and the thumbnail button are the two that bite. A webinar replay or a full product demo will almost always run longer than that, and a custom thumbnail is what makes people click.
Getting advanced YouTube features with ID, video or channel history
Phone verification is step one. YouTube's help says advanced features need that first, and then one of three things:
| Route to advanced features | How it works, per YouTube's help |
|---|---|
| Channel history | Established channels with sufficient history will likely qualify automatically |
| Valid ID | Verify your identity with an ID to get advanced features straight away |
| Video verification | Verify your identity with a short video to get them straight away |
YouTube notes that ID and video verification aren't offered to every creator. Advanced features include Content ID appeals, embedding live streams, clickable links in long-form video descriptions, pinned comments, chapters and A/B testing. You keep them by following the Community Guidelines and keeping a positive channel history.
Checking whether your YouTube account is already verified
You don't have to guess. On a computer:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Click Settings.
- Click Channel.
- Open Feature eligibility.
Anything you can use shows Enabled next to it. YouTube says some features aren't managed here and have separate rules, so if something's still missing, it may have its own requirements.
When the YouTube verification code doesn't arrive
Google says the code should come through straight away. If it doesn't, work through these in order:

- Wait a few minutes. Text delivery can lag in busy areas or on some networks.
- Request a new code.
- Switch method: if you asked for a text, try the voice call, or the other way round.
- Try a number on a different carrier, because not all carriers support messages or calls from Google.
There's one error that no amount of retrying fixes. If you see a message saying the phone number has already created the maximum number of accounts, YouTube's help says a number can be linked to no more than 2 channels per year. You'll need a different number.
Verifying a YouTube account is not the same as age checks or the badge
Three things get mixed up all the time:
- Phone verification, covered on this page, opens up channel features.
- Age verification is about watching age-restricted videos. It's a separate process, and I've covered it in my guide to verifying your age on YouTube.
- The grey check mark next to a channel name is a different programme. Phone verifying won't give you that badge.
Why a verified YouTube account matters for a small business
If your channel is part of how you win clients, the features behind verification are the ones that make videos look finished. Custom thumbnails keep your brand consistent, longer uploads let you post full training sessions, and chapters (an advanced feature) make long videos easy to skim. It's worth doing before you upload your first video to YouTube, so you don't hit a wall halfway through.
Verification also helps when someone else uploads for you. If a freelancer or assistant manages your videos, the channel's features depend on the channel being verified, not on their own account, so sort it once at the start and everyone working on the channel benefits.
One practical tip: use a number your business will keep. If a team member verifies with their personal mobile and later leaves, you'll want to know which number is attached.
If verification still won't work on your YouTube channel
- Check you're signed into the channel's own account, not a different Google account.
- Try another browser or a computer instead of a phone.
- If you hit a daily limit with advanced access, YouTube says you'll need to wait 24 hours.
- Use the Help option inside YouTube Studio if nothing changes, because YouTube can see account details you can't.
