How to Join a Zoom Meeting: Link, Meeting ID, Browser or Phone

To join a Zoom meeting, click the join link in your invite, open it in the Zoom Workplace app or choose Join from your browser, check your audio and video, then click Join. You don't need an account as a guest, but the browser option only appears if the host has switched it on.

Someone has sent you a Zoom invite for a discovery call, a networking session or a client catch-up, and you want to arrive on time looking like you've done this a hundred times. Good news: you don't need a Zoom account to join as a guest, and there are four or five ways in depending on what's in your invite and which device is closest.

I'll go through each route the way Zoom's own support pages describe it, then cover the waiting room, joining from a browser and what to check if the link won't open.

Joining a Zoom meeting from the invite link

This is the route most people use. According to Zoom's help:

  1. Open the invitation email or calendar entry.
  2. Click the join link under Join Zoom Meeting.
  3. Choose to open the meeting in the Zoom Workplace app, or click Join from your browser.
  4. Check your audio and video settings in the preview.
  5. Click Join.

If you don't have the app installed, your browser may offer to download it. You can also cancel that pop-up and look for the browser option, which I cover below.

Joining a Zoom meeting with a meeting ID

Sometimes all you've got is a number, perhaps read out on a call or printed on an event page. Zoom says the meeting ID is a unique 9, 10 or 11-digit number. To use it:

  1. Go to join.zoom.us in your browser.
  2. Enter the meeting ID the host gave you.
  3. Click Join.
  4. Open the Zoom app when prompted, or choose the browser option.
  5. Enter the passcode if you're asked for one.

Joining a scheduled Zoom meeting from the desktop or mobile app

If you're signed in to Zoom and the meeting is on your calendar, Zoom shows it inside the app.

On a computer

  1. Sign in to the Zoom Workplace desktop app on Windows, macOS or Linux.
  2. Open the Home, Meetings or Calendar tab. If you can't see them, open the More tab first.
  3. Click the meeting.
  4. Click Join on the meeting card.

On a phone or tablet

  1. Sign in to the Zoom Workplace mobile app on Android or iOS.
  2. Tap the Meetings or Calendar tab at the bottom of the screen, or tap More first.
  3. Tap the meeting.
  4. Tap Join.

Hosts see Start instead of Join on the same card, which is a handy way to check which account you're signed into.

Joining a Zoom meeting from your browser without the app

Zoom's help says you can join from a browser without downloading anything, but only if the host has switched on the Show a Join from your browser link setting. If they have, here's how it goes:

  1. Click the invite link.
  2. Click Cancel on the pop-up asking to open the app.
  3. Click Join from your browser at the bottom of the page.
  4. Click Allow so Zoom can use your microphone and camera.
  5. Type the display name you want people to see and click Join.
  6. Enter the passcode if prompted and click Join again.

Zoom is clear that the browser gives you basic meeting features, and that mobile browsers are more limited still. For a quick call that's fine. For a workshop where you'll share your screen or use breakout rooms, the app is the safer choice.

Joining a Zoom meeting by phone

No laptop and patchy data? Dial in. Zoom's steps are:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  1. Dial the number in the invitation.
  2. Enter the meeting ID and passcode when prompted.
  3. If you've already joined on a computer, enter your 6-digit participant ID to link your phone to that session. If not, press # when asked for the participant ID.

Linking the two is useful when your computer microphone is playing up: you keep the video on your laptop and talk through your phone.

What happens after you click Join on Zoom

According to Zoom, depending on the host's settings, you'll either go straight into the meeting or wait in a waiting room until the host lets you in. Sitting in the waiting room is normal, so don't keep leaving and rejoining. The host can see you're there.

A few habits make a good first impression on client calls:

  • Join a couple of minutes early so you can sort audio before the host arrives.
  • Check your name shows the way you want people to address you.
  • Stay muted until you're speaking if you're somewhere noisy.
  • If someone has brought an AI note-taker along, it's fine to ask what happens to the notes.

On that last point, I've written about what to know before an AI note-taker joins your calls, which is worth a skim if you run sales or client meetings.

If you can't join a Zoom meeting

  1. Check the meeting ID and passcode against the invite, digit by digit.
  2. If Zoom asks you to sign in, the host may have restricted the meeting. Zoom says that when authentication profiles are used, all participants must be signed in to a Zoom account.
  3. No browser option showing? The host hasn't enabled it, so open or download the Zoom app instead.
  4. Stuck on a waiting screen? Message the host by email or text to let you in.
  5. Update the Zoom app, restart it and try the link again.
  6. If it still fails, check Zoom's support centre or ask the host to send a fresh link.

Frequently asked questions

How do I join a Zoom meeting?

Click the join link in your invitation, choose to open the Zoom Workplace app or join from your browser, check your audio and video, then click Join. You can also enter the meeting ID at join.zoom.us.

No. Zoom says you don't need an account to join as a participant. The exception is when the host restricts the meeting so that all participants must be signed in.

Yes, if the host has enabled the Join from your browser link. Cancel the app pop-up, click Join from your browser, allow your microphone and camera, enter your name and click Join.

How do I join a Zoom meeting by phone?

Dial the number in the invitation, enter the meeting ID and passcode, then enter your 6-digit participant ID if you're also on a computer, or press # if you're not.

Why am I stuck in the Zoom waiting room?

The host has a waiting room switched on and needs to admit you. Stay put, and message the host if it takes a while.
