To tag a Page on Facebook, type @ followed by the Page's name in a post or comment, then select it from the list that appears. If the Page doesn't show up, its settings may block mentions, and photo tags only work when that Page allows others to tag it.
Tagging a business Page on Facebook is one of the simplest bits of free promotion there is. Thank a supplier, credit a venue, shout out a collaborator, and the tag turns their name into a link people can click. For small businesses it's also how you get noticed by the Pages you'd love to work with.
Facebook's help calls it mentioning when you do it in text, and tagging when you do it on a photo. I'll cover both, following Facebook's own help pages, plus the reason a Page sometimes refuses to show up when you type its name.
Mentioning a Facebook Page in a post or comment
The text version works the same in a post or a comment. Facebook's help says to type @ and then the Page's name, then pick it from the list that appears.
- Start a new post, or click into a comment box under an existing post.
- Type @ followed by the first few letters of the Page's name.
- Wait for the list of suggestions to appear under your cursor.
- Select the right Page from the list. The name turns into a highlighted link.
- Finish your post or comment and share it as normal.
The step people skip is choosing from the list. If you type the whole name and carry on without selecting it, you end up with plain text and no tag. On phones the action is the same typed @, though menus vary by app version.
Tagging a Facebook Page in a photo from your own Page
Photo tags work differently and come with an extra condition. Facebook's help says that to tag another Page in your Page's photos, that Page must have allowed others to tag it. If it hasn't, it won't appear when you search.
Facebook's steps for tagging from a Page on a computer are:
- Switch into your Page so you're acting as the business, not your personal profile.
- Open the photo you want to tag.
- Click Tag photo.
- Click on the person or Page in the photo.
- Start typing the Page's name and select it when it appears.
- Click Done Tagging.
Facebook's help describes these clicks for a computer. On the phone app, menus vary by app version, so if you can't find the tag option there, do photo tags from a browser.
What happens after you tag a Page on Facebook
According to Facebook's help, mentioning a Page creates a link, and who can see that link depends on the privacy settings involved. The Page may get a notification, and your post or comment may appear on its timeline.
Notice the word may. You can't force a tagged Page to see or show your post. That's down to its own settings and how its admins manage notifications. So if you're tagging a brand you'd like to collaborate with, treat the tag as a polite nudge, and follow up with a direct message if it matters.
| Tag type | Where you do it | Main condition |
|---|---|---|
| Mention | In a post or comment, with @ and the name | The Page's settings may stop you mentioning it |
| Photo tag | On a photo, using Tag photo | The Page must allow others to tag it |
Why a Facebook Page won't come up when you tag it
Facebook's help says plainly that, depending on a Page's settings, you may not be able to mention it. Admins can restrict this. If a Page doesn't appear in the list:
- Check the spelling of the first few letters and wait a second for suggestions to load.
- Check you're searching for the Page and not a person or group with a similar name.
- For a photo tag, remember the Page has to have allowed tagging. If it hasn't, you can't add one.
- If it still won't appear, mention the business in plain words and add its web address in the post instead.
Controlling who can tag or mention your own Facebook Page
If you look after a business Page, you're on the other side of this too. Facebook's help says stopping other people or Pages from tagging your Page needs admin access, under the setting called Manage how others can tag or mention your Page.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
I'd leave tagging on for most small businesses, because happy customers tagging you is free word of mouth. Restrict it if you're getting spam tags or tags on content you don't want linked to your brand.
Getting more from Facebook Page tags as a small business
A tag works best when there's a real reason for it. A few that I see working well:
- Credit a venue, photographer or co-host in event posts.
- Thank a supplier publicly when you launch something new.
- Mention a partner business in a joint offer so both audiences see the post.
- Tag the Page of a group you spoke at, with a photo from the day.
Don't tag Pages that have nothing to do with the post just for reach. It looks spammy and admins can remove or restrict it. If you want to share a reel you've been tagged in, my guide on copying the link to a Facebook reel shows how. And if your Page is new, it's worth checking whether your Facebook Page comes with a QR code so people can find it offline as well.
Finding an old post where you tagged a Facebook Page
Tagged a Page months ago and want to find the post again? It may have been archived rather than deleted. My walkthrough on finding archived Facebook posts covers where those end up.
