What Is Agentforce? Salesforce's AI Agents Explained Simply

Agentforce is Salesforce's platform for AI agents that work inside your customer data to handle tasks like qualifying leads, answering service questions and running campaigns. Unlike a basic chatbot, an agent breaks a request into steps and takes actions within guardrails. The catch: it only shines if your Salesforce data is tidy.

If you use Salesforce, or you've been pitched it, you've probably heard the name Agentforce. It's Salesforce's big push into AI agents, and the marketing can make it sound like magic. Underneath the buzzwords there's a clear idea: AI assistants that work inside your customer data and handle real tasks for your sales, service and marketing teams.

Here's what Agentforce is, what its agents do, how they work, and what a small or growing business should think about before diving in. I've based everything on Salesforce's own Agentforce pages.

What Agentforce is

Salesforce describes Agentforce as its AI agent platform, built to deliver round-the-clock autonomous support. Agents can be deployed on the web, by phone or inside apps.

Salesforce defines AI agents as autonomous, proactive applications designed to carry out specialised tasks to help employees and customers. In plain terms, an agent is more than a chatbot that answers questions: it can take steps, like updating a record or following up a lead, within limits you set.

What Agentforce agents can do

Salesforce gives examples across different parts of a business:

How Agentforce works behind the scenes

Salesforce says Agentforce starts with the Atlas Reasoning Engine, which breaks a request down into smaller tasks, then plans and checks each step until the job is done. That's what lets an agent handle a multi-step request rather than giving a single canned answer.

The agents draw on your business data, including your Salesforce CRM records and outside data brought in through Data 360. Salesforce says they work within guardrails you set and can escalate complex issues to a person.

If you're new to the idea of agents in general, my plain guide to AI agents and automation explains how they differ from simple chatbots and automations.

How Agentforce agents are built

Salesforce says businesses build agents with Agent Builder, using tools already in the Salesforce Platform. You configure the agent's instructions, the actions it can take and any smaller sub-agents in a few clicks. For teams who want tighter control, Salesforce also offers Agent Script.

  1. Choose one clear job, such as answering order-status questions.
  2. Write instructions describing how the agent should behave and when to hand over to a person.
  3. Give it the actions it needs, and only those actions.
  4. Connect the data it should use, such as your CRM records or help articles.
  5. Test it with real customer questions before turning it on.
  6. Review conversations regularly and refine the instructions.

Getting started with Agentforce

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you're not on Salesforce yet, Agentforce is one factor among many when choosing a CRM. My comparison of HubSpot and Pipedrive covers two popular alternatives that small businesses often weigh up.

What small businesses should think about first

  • Clean data matters. An agent working from messy or out-of-date CRM records will give messy answers.
  • Start small. One agent doing one job well beats five doing everything badly.
  • Keep the human touch. Make it easy for customers to reach a person.
  • Set guardrails. Decide what an agent may never do, such as promising refunds.
  • Tell customers. Be open that they're talking to an AI agent.

That human touch point is the one I'd stress most. My guide to AI customer service without losing the human touch goes into how to get the balance right.

Questions to ask before you switch on an Agentforce agent

  • Which single task will the agent own, and how will you know it's doing it well?
  • Which records and help articles can it read, and are they up to date?
  • What actions can it take, and which ones should always need a person?
  • How will customers reach a human if they want one?
  • Who on your team reviews its conversations, and how often?

Writing the answers down before you start saves a lot of tidying up later, and it gives your team a shared picture of what the agent is for.

Agentforce compared with other AI agents

Agentforce's strength is that it lives inside Salesforce, right next to your customer data. If your business doesn't use Salesforce, general agent builders and assistants may fit better. If you'd like an independent view on which route suits your business, that's exactly the kind of question I help with as an AI consultant.
