LM Studio Alternatives (2026): 10 Tools Compared

If you want LM Studio alternatives, decide whether you'd like a plain chat window, a phone app or an open-source project, and check what your device can run. This page lists ten options in no particular order, with each one's free plan status checked.

LM Studio is a desktop app for finding, downloading and chatting with AI models that run on your own computer. Its docs describe a chat window, document chat and a local server that other programs can use, on macOS, Windows and Linux, and a recent post on its site says it's free for use at work as well as at home. If it's not quite right for you, there are plenty of other routes.

These are ten LM Studio alternatives in no particular order, sorted alphabetically. Some are polished chat apps, one is a phone and Mac app, and a couple are tools for tinkerers. Every description comes from each tool's own website or project page, so confirm the details there before you install. If you're still deciding whether local AI is for you, my roundup of AI tools for small business owners covers the hosted side.

LM Studio alternatives at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site or project page says it's free or open source. Trial only means a free trial and nothing ongoing. No means neither is stated. Offers move around, so check the site itself.

Why people look beyond one local AI app

Most people don't leave because something is broken. They want a different feel. Maybe they'd like an app that also connects to online models, one that runs on a phone, or one released under an open-source licence so they can see how it works. Others simply want a lighter tool that stays out of the way.

It helps to name your reason before you compare. If you want fewer menus, you'll look for something plain. If you want to see the source code, you'll filter for open source. If you want your documents in the loop, you'll look for a file feature. Each reason points to a different part of this list.

Open-source or closed: what it means for a local AI app

Open source means the code is public, so other people can read it, check it and often change it. It doesn't automatically make an app better, but it does mean you can see how it handles your data, and the project can carry on if one company steps away. Each tool's project page states its licence.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

A closed app can still be free to use. The difference is that you're trusting the maker's description of what it does. Whichever you pick, read the privacy notes and check what the app sends over the internet, if anything.

Checking the licence of the models you load into any app

The app and the model are two separate things with two separate licences. An open-source app can load a model with limits on commercial use, and the reverse can happen too. Look at the licence on each model's page before you use its answers in client work, on a website or in a product.

Keep a short note of the model, where you got it and what the licence said on the day. This is general guidance, not legal advice, so check your own situation if a project matters.

Questions to settle before leaving LM Studio

  • Can I reuse the model files I've already downloaded, or do I need to fetch them again?
  • Does the new app give me a chat window, a local address for other programs, or both?
  • Will it run on my phone as well as my computer, if I want that?
  • Where are my chats stored, and can I export or delete them?
  • Is the project still being updated, and who looks after it?
  • Does it connect to online models, and can I switch that off?

If you'd like a second pair of eyes on a setup for your business, an AI consultant in the UK can help you decide what's worth running yourself.

Choosing local AI for a phone, a laptop or a desktop

A phone has far less memory than a computer, so apps built for phones use smaller models and feel lighter. A laptop sits in the middle, and a desktop with a graphics card can handle larger models more comfortably. Match the tool to the device you use most, not the one you wish you had.

Battery matters too. Running a model keeps the processor busy, and a laptop away from its charger will notice. If you plan to use local AI on the go, try a short session unplugged before you rely on it.

Keeping a local AI chat app tidy and safe

Install from the maker's own site or project page. Be careful with add-ons and extra model files from unknown sources, and keep the app updated. If a tool can open a local address, switch off network sharing unless you need it.

Treat your chat history like any other business file. Local doesn't mean disposable, so clear out conversations that hold client details you no longer need.

Do you make a desktop or mobile app for running AI models locally? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

A short checklist before you move away from LM Studio

List the three things you used it for. Choose two options from this page that cover them, try each with one small model, and notice how quickly you get an answer. Keep the one that fits your day, and set yourself a reminder to look again in a few months.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use instead of LM Studio?

You can use another desktop chat app, a command line tool, a phone app or a launcher that installs several projects for you. Pick by device, by how much you like menus and by whether you want open-source code.

Is there an open-source alternative to LM Studio?

Yes, several. Many of the tools listed here are open source, and each project page states its licence. Read the licence itself rather than relying on a summary.

Can I run local AI on my phone?

Some apps are built for iPhone, iPad or Android, using smaller models. The experience is lighter than on a computer, and each app's page lists the devices it supports.

Will my existing model files work in a new app?

Often, because many tools read the same common file types. Check which formats the new app supports before you move or delete anything.

Do I need an internet connection?

You need one to download the app and models. After that, many tools work offline, though some can also connect to online services if you choose.
