Janitor AI Alternatives (2026): 10 Apps Compared

The right Janitor AI alternative depends on whether you want a simple hosted app, one long-term companion or a tool you run yourself. Check the age rules, privacy page and what each app stores before you chat. This page lists ten general-audience options in no particular order, then covers how to choose one and stay safe.

Janitor AI is a website where people chat with AI characters, usually for storytelling, roleplay and fun. Plenty of people enjoy it, but it isn't for everyone. Some want a simpler app, some want something they can run on their own computer, and some want a service with clearer rules about who can use it. If that sounds like you, here are some Janitor AI alternatives to look at.

I've kept this list to general-audience apps and tools. Here are ten options in no particular order, sorted alphabetically. Each description comes from the tool's own website or help pages, so check the current details before you start. If you're also curious about chatbots that work for a business rather than for fun, my guide to what an AI chatbot can do for a business covers that side.

Janitor AI alternatives at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site describes a permanent free option, usually with limits. Trial only means a free trial but no ongoing free plan. Character apps change their rules often, so it's worth reading the current terms before you sign up.

Staying safe with AI character chat apps

Chatting with an AI character can feel surprisingly personal, so a few sensible habits matter whichever app you pick. This isn't medical or legal advice, just the things I'd want any friend or family member to know before they start.

  • Check the age limit. Every app sets a minimum age in its terms, and some are for adults only. Read the terms yourself, and if you're a parent, look at them before a child downloads anything.
  • Keep personal details out of chats. Don't share your full name, address, school, workplace, passwords or photos of yourself.
  • Remember that chats may be stored. What you type can be kept by the company and, depending on the app, used to improve its models. The privacy policy explains how.
  • These apps aren't therapy. A character can be comforting, but it isn't a counsellor or a friend who knows you. If you need real support, speak to a person or a qualified professional.
  • Step away if it starts to affect you. If a chat leaves you anxious, low, or spending far more time online than you'd like, take a break and talk to someone you trust.
  • Treat characters as fiction. They can sound confident and still be wrong, so never rely on one for health, legal or money decisions.

How to choose a Janitor AI alternative

The apps on this page do similar jobs in different ways. A few questions will narrow things down quickly.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Hosted or on your own computer? Hosted apps are quick to start. Local tools give you more control over where your chats live but take more setup.
  • Library or one companion? Some apps are built around browsing many characters, others around a single character that gets to know you.
  • Rules and moderation. Look for clear community guidelines, a way to report characters and straightforward age rules.
  • Memory. Can a character remember earlier chats, or does each one start fresh?
  • Where it runs. Browser, phone app or desktop programme, and whether it works offline.
  • Data controls. Can you delete chats and your account, and does the app explain what it keeps?

Hosted apps, companion apps and open-source front ends

It helps to know which type of Janitor AI alternative you're looking at, because they feel very different to use.

  • Hosted character libraries are the easiest. You sign up, pick a character someone else made and start talking.
  • Companion apps centre on one long-running character with its own personality and memory, more like a diary that answers back.
  • Open-source front ends are free to install, but you usually connect them to an AI model yourself, which means reading that provider's terms too.
  • Multi-bot apps let you try lots of bots and models side by side, which suits people who like to experiment.

If you're weighing up whether AI helpers suit you at all, my comparison of AI assistants and chatbots explains how the two differ.

Switching away from Janitor AI without losing your characters

If you've built characters or saved chats you care about, sort that out before you move. Copy out the descriptions and starting messages of your characters, and note any settings you rely on.

  • Save the text of anything you wrote yourself, such as character descriptions and scenarios.
  • Check whether the new app lets you import character files, and which formats it accepts.
  • Start with one character and see how it behaves before you move the rest.
  • Don't reuse a password from another account.
  • Read the new app's privacy page before you paste in anything personal.

Why a smaller character chat app can be worth a look

Smaller and open-source tools tend to focus on one thing, such as local use or customisation, and they can change quickly. The trade-off is that they're often run by small teams or volunteers, so support can be thin and features can come and go. Check when the project was last updated and read its community rules before you settle in.

A word on privacy: if you want maximum control, a tool that runs on your own computer keeps chats off a company's servers, although you'll still need to look at any outside model it connects to. My piece on AI tools and client privacy shows the sort of questions worth asking.

Do you make an AI character chat app or roleplay tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

A short checklist before you settle on one

Pick two apps that fit how you want to chat, read the age rules and privacy page for each, then try a short, harmless conversation in both. Keep the one that feels comfortable and clear about its rules, and delete anything you're not happy with.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI character chat app?

It's an app where you talk to a fictional or imagined character powered by an AI model. People use them for storytelling, practising conversation, roleplay and fun.

Are AI character apps suitable for children?

That depends on the app and its terms. Every app sets its own minimum age, and some are for adults only, so read the terms and talk to your child before they use one.

Is it safe to share personal information in a character chat?

It's best not to. Chats can be stored by the company, so avoid names, addresses, passwords and anything you'd not want kept.

Can an AI character replace a counsellor or a friend?

No. A character can be a pleasant distraction, but it isn't a trained professional. If you're struggling, speak to someone you trust or a qualified person.

What does open source mean for a chat tool?

The code is public, so anyone can inspect it and often run their own copy. You may still need to connect it to an AI model, which has its own terms.

Do these apps remember what I said earlier?

Some do and some don't. Memory features vary between apps, so check how each one works and whether you can delete what it has stored.
