Is G2A Legit? Sellers, Refunds and Dead Keys (2026)

G2A is a real, long-running store for game keys, but it isn't the seller in most cases. According to Wikipedia, individuals sell the keys, and G2A's own Support Hub says the seller you bought from is your first contact and decides refunds. So it works for many buyers, while your protection depends on the seller you pick.

Game keys that cost far less than the big stores are tempting, and I get why people stop and ask who is behind the site. I haven't taken anyone's word for it here. I've read G2A's own Support Hub pages, what its footer says about the companies behind it, and what Wikipedia records about disputes with game studios, so you can see what's solid and what isn't.

Who is behind G2A and what it sells

Wikipedia says G2A began in 2010 as Go2Arena in Rzeszow, Poland, and is now headquartered in the Netherlands, with offices in Poland, Hong Kong and the United States. The site's own footer names G2A.COM Limited and GATE READY Limited in Hong Kong and G2A LLC in Carson City, Nevada as the operators, and says that using the platform means accepting the G2A Terms and Conditions.

What it sells is mostly activation keys. Wikipedia lists Steam, EA app, Ubisoft Connect, PlayStation Network, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, along with gift cards and top-ups. The important point is who sells them. Listings on the site show offers from several sellers, and Wikipedia notes that individuals sell the keys. So G2A is the shop window and the middleman, and the person who supplies your key is a third-party seller.

How buying from a G2A seller works

Because the sellers vary, the offer you choose matters as much as the brand. G2A's Support Hub says that if something goes wrong with a key, the seller you bought from is your first line of contact. Refund eligibility depends on each seller's terms, which you'll find on that seller's store page, and the page is blunt about it: the decision whether to issue a refund is up to the seller.

That is quite different from buying a key straight from a publisher's store or a single big retailer. Before you buy, open the seller's page and read their terms rather than going by the price alone. If you play on a console and your friends are on a phone, my guide to playing Xbox games on your phone with cloud gaming is worth a look as another route to games.

What to do if a G2A key doesn't work

G2A's Support Hub says non-working keys are usually caused by typos or similar issues, and it gives a checklist before you ask for a refund:

  • Check the key for typos and extra spaces.
  • Confirm you're activating it on the platform the listing names.
  • Confirm you're using the correct region.
  • Make sure you bought an activation key and not an account.
  • Follow the activation instructions on the listing carefully.

If it still fails, the Support Hub says to contact the seller again. Region mistakes are the classic trap with cheap keys, so read the region line on the listing before checkout, not after.

How to request a G2A refund step by step

  1. Sign in with the same email you used for the order.
  2. Go to the Your keys tab, or open Order history, choose View details, then Contact seller. The Conversations tab works too.
  3. Explain the problem and include screenshots from the activation process.
  4. Keep the whole discussion inside that conversation.
  5. If you haven't had a response or help after 5 days, contact G2A Support, which the Support Hub says steps in when a seller is unresponsive.

The Support Hub also warns you to beware of anyone offering a refund outside that channel. That's a sensible rule for any shop: a refund that starts in a private chat or a link is how people lose their money twice.

The G2A Shield question

You'll see a lot written about G2A Shield, G2A's optional protection add-on. I couldn't find a current official G2A page that spells out what it covers, and the third-party write-ups disagree with each other, so I won't describe it. If you see it offered at checkout, read G2A's own wording on that screen, and check what it adds beyond the seller refund rules above before you agree to it.

What studios and the press have said about G2A

The criticism of G2A mostly comes from game developers, and it's well documented. According to Wikipedia, tinyBuild's chief executive, Alex Nichiporchik, accused G2A in 2016 of letting resellers sell fraudulently obtained keys, which he said cost his company 450,000 US dollars. Wikipedia also says critics have called G2A a grey market, where keys bought cheaply in one region are resold elsewhere.

There is a settlement on record too. Wikipedia says G2A settled with Wube Software in 2020, paying 39,600 US dollars for 198 improperly purchased keys. I'm reporting those as claims and outcomes recorded by Wikipedia, not as my own findings, and none of it says that every key sold on G2A is a problem. It does explain why some developers say they'd rather you bought from their own store, so decide whether supporting the studio matters to you.

Payments on G2A

Wikipedia says G2A's own payment gateway, G2A PAY, was discontinued in 2022 when it became part of ZEN.com. So older articles that talk about G2A Pay are out of date. Pay only at G2A's checkout, check the final total, and never move a conversation or payment to email or a chat app.

Spotting fake G2A emails and sites

A big name attracts copycats. Type the address yourself, ignore messages claiming your order is on hold, and don't enter your login details on a page you reached through an advert or message. If you're being asked for payment details on a site that only looks like G2A, close it. A seller asking you to buy a gift card elsewhere to settle an order is another red flag. And if someone is pressuring or threatening you, report it to the platform and, if you feel in danger, contact the police.

Is G2A worth using?

G2A is a real, established business with a written process for non-working keys, so it isn't a pure gamble. The catch is that it works as a go-between, and the seller you pick decides whether you get your money back. If you go ahead, choose the offer carefully, check the platform and region, activate the key soon after buying, and keep every message in the conversation. If you only want something to play tonight, my piece on claiming free PC games through gaming subscriptions may save you the risk altogether.

Frequently asked questions

Is G2A legit?

Yes, it's a real company that has been running since 2010, according to Wikipedia. It isn't the seller for most keys, though: third-party sellers list them, and the seller usually decides refunds.

Is G2A safe to buy from?

It can be if you choose sellers carefully, check the platform and region, and keep everything inside G2A's conversation system. Some developers have publicly criticised the way keys are resold, so decide how you feel about that.

Does G2A sell the keys itself?

Per G2A's pages and Wikipedia, listings show offers from several sellers and individuals sell the keys. G2A acts as the platform that connects you with them.

What if my G2A key doesn't work?

Check for typos and extra spaces, the platform, the region and whether you bought a key or an account. Then contact the seller from your order. If there's no help after 5 days, G2A's Support Hub says to contact G2A Support.

Who decides whether I get a refund on G2A?

G2A's Support Hub says refund eligibility depends on each seller's terms and that the decision is up to the seller. Read the seller's terms on their store page before you buy.

Is G2A Pay still used?

No. Wikipedia says G2A PAY was discontinued in 2022 when it became part of ZEN.com.
