TravelUp is a real online travel agent: its FAQ says TravelUp Limited is a UK-registered company owned by TravelUp Group PLC, and it books as an agent with your contract held with the airline or supplier. The catch is the rules: changes carry airline charges plus a TravelUp admin fee, Service Packs can't be refunded, and ATOL protection covers only certain bookings.
When you've never heard of a travel booking site, it's wise to pause before you hand over card details. TravelUp comes up a lot for cheap flights, and plenty of people want to know who is behind it and what happens if plans change. I went through TravelUp's own help FAQ and home page and set out what they say below.
Who is behind TravelUp
According to TravelUp's help FAQ, TravelUp Limited is a UK-registered travel company that is wholly owned by TravelUp Group PLC. The site footer says TravelUp.com is part of Travel Up Group PLC. The FAQ also says TravelUp is an IATA Accredited Agent, which is the body that approves agents to issue airline tickets.
That gives you a named company to look up, which is a good start. It doesn't tell you whether a particular fare suits you, so the rules on changes and refunds matter more.
How booking with TravelUp works
TravelUp's home page describes a flight and hotel booking site that compares flights from hundreds of airlines in one search, and says fares show baggage, seat and refund rules before checkout. So it's an agent, not an airline.
The FAQ spells out what that means. It says TravelUp acts as an agent for the carrier and is not liable for schedule or operational changes, and that contracts for travel services exist between you and the respective supplier. In plain terms, if the airline retimes or cancels your flight, the airline's rules decide what happens, and TravelUp passes things along.
Changes and cancellations through TravelUp
| Situation | What TravelUp's FAQ says |
|---|---|
| Changing a booking | Standard charges apply: the airline fee, plus any fare difference, plus a 75 pound TravelUp admin fee. |
| Cancelling without a Service Pack | Cancellation follows the airline's rules, plus TravelUp admin fees. |
| Refund timing | After airline authorisation, refunds are processed within 7 to 10 business days. |
| Where refunds go | Back to the original payment method. |
The detail to notice is the admin fee on top of what the airline charges. A cheap fare can become less cheap if your plans move, so decide whether you can commit before you pay.
TravelUp Service Packs explained
TravelUp sells optional Service Packs, called Silver, Gold and Platinum, which you choose at checkout. The FAQ describes them as bundles that can give cancellation flexibility and other support. It also says all Service Packs are non-refundable and non-transferable once confirmed.
That last sentence is the one to read twice. If you buy a pack and then your trip is cancelled for another reason, you shouldn't expect the pack itself to be refunded. Compare what the pack gives you with how likely you'd be to change the booking.
ATOL and ABTA: what TravelUp says about safeguards
This is the part people most often misunderstand. It's easy to assume every booking is protected in the same way, and TravelUp's own wording says otherwise. TravelUp's FAQ says ATOL protection applies only to confirmed Flight + Hotel bookings, so a flight-only booking isn't covered by that statement. It also says TravelUp Group PLC is not currently an ABTA member.
I'd read TravelUp's own ATOL and financial protection page for your exact booking, because the wording differs between product types. If protection matters to you, for example for a larger trip, ask TravelUp which scheme covers your booking and keep that reply with your confirmation.

What to check before booking with TravelUp
- Type the website address yourself and avoid links in adverts or unexpected messages.
- Look at the total price and the baggage, seat and refund rules before you pay.
- Decide whether a Service Pack is worth it, bearing in mind it can't be refunded once confirmed.
- Check whether your booking is flight-only or Flight + Hotel, since ATOL protection is described as applying to the second.
- Save your confirmation, the airline's reference and the fare conditions.
- Check the airline's own site for your booking reference a few days before you travel.
A quick habit helps here. Before paying, screenshot the page that shows what you're buying and the rules attached to it. If anything is disputed later, that record is far more useful than memory.
Spotting fake TravelUp messages
Travel brands are copied all the time. If you receive a message saying your TravelUp booking needs urgent payment, or a refund is waiting if you share card details, don't click it. Go to the site yourself, or use the contact details in your original confirmation. Also be careful of anyone asking you to pay outside the checkout.
Heading off on a work trip? Packing well helps as much as booking well, and my notes on choosing a travel backpack and planning a first ski holiday are worth a look once your flight is sorted.
My view on whether TravelUp is legit
From its own pages, TravelUp is a real agent run by a registered company, with published rules for changes, refunds and Service Packs. It isn't the airline, so fare conditions and the airline's decisions still apply, and the protection it describes is narrower than many people assume. Read the fare rules, the pack terms and the protection page before you pay, because they can change.
