How to Recover Deleted Files From Google Drive (2026 Guide)

To recover deleted files from Google Drive, go to drive.google.com, click Trash, right-click the file and click Restore. Google's help says files stay in Trash for 30 days before they're deleted forever, so act quickly.

That sinking feeling when a file you needed has vanished from Drive is miserable, especially when it's a client document on a deadline. The good news is that a deleted file usually isn't gone straight away. The bad news is that the rescue window is limited, so the sooner you look, the better.

Everything below comes from Google's Drive help pages. I'll start with the quickest rescue, then cover the cases people hit when the file isn't in Trash: files that someone else owns, files that lost their folder, and what a work or school administrator can do.

Restoring a deleted file from the Google Drive Trash

  1. Go to drive.google.com and sign in to the account you used.
  2. Click Trash on the left.
  3. Find the file. Sort by the trashed date if you want to see when things were deleted.
  4. Right-click the file and click Restore.

Restore puts the file back where it came from. If you'd rather open it first to check it's the right version, do that before you restore. On the Drive mobile app the route is similar: open the app, tap the menu beside the file in Trash and tap Restore. Exact labels vary with app version.

How long Google Drive keeps deleted files

According to Google's help, files remain in Trash for 30 days, then they're deleted forever. That's the number to keep in mind. If someone deleted a file six weeks ago, the Trash route won't help, and the sections further down matter more.

The same help also says that clicking Empty trash permanently deletes everything in it. So if you tidy up your Trash regularly, check the contents before you click, rather than after.

When a missing Google Drive file isn't in the Trash

Often the file hasn't been deleted at all. It's just in the wrong place. Google's help for lost files suggests this order:

  1. Use Drive search. Typing part of the file name is the quickest check.
  2. Make sure you're signed in to the right account. Plenty of people have both a work and a personal one.
  3. Search is:unorganized. Google says files you own can lose their folder when that folder is deleted or your access to it ends, and this search finds them. Then move them back into My Drive.
  4. Open My Drive, select Info and then Activity. If you own the item, recent activity can show whether it was moved or deleted.
  5. If the file was shared with you, the owner may have moved it, removed your access to the parent folder or placed it in a limited-access folder. Ask them to check.

Recovering a Google Drive file that someone else deleted

This is common on teams. Google's help says that if you don't own a file, deleting it only removes it from your own Drive, and other people keep access. So when something disappears from a shared folder, the likeliest answer is that the owner deleted it or took your access away.

Ask the owner to look in their Trash. Google's help says people you shared a file with can keep accessing it until it's permanently deleted, so a quick message can save the file before the 30 days are up.

Recovering Google Drive files on a work or school account

If your Drive comes from an organisation, the administrator has an extra route. Google's admin help says an administrator can recover deleted items within 25 days after a user empties their trash. I found that detail in a search summary of Google's Workspace admin page, so ask your administrator to confirm what applies to your account.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Don't wait. If your own recovery attempts fail, tell your administrator quickly, because that window is shorter than the Trash period.

Stopping it happening again to your Google Drive files

  • Keep the important files in a shared folder owned by the business, not by one person's personal account. When someone leaves, ownership problems can wipe out access.
  • Check the Trash before you empty it.
  • Use clear folder names, so a misplaced file is easier to spot.
  • Keep a second copy of the files you can't afford to lose somewhere else, such as a drive you control.

If you build client paperwork in Google Docs, my guide on filling in a Google Docs template correctly shows a set-up worth backing up. And if decks are the thing you lose, my list of other tools for presentations may suit you better.

If your deleted Google Drive file still won't come back

  1. Check the date. Anything in Trash longer than 30 days has gone.
  2. Try Drive search on a different phrase from inside the file.
  3. Ask each person who had access whether they still have a copy or an offline version.
  4. Look for older versions of related files on your computer, if you use Drive for desktop. Google says files you trash there are trashed everywhere.
  5. Contact your administrator, or Google through its help centre, and explain what the file was and when it vanished.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a deleted file back in Google Drive?

Go to drive.google.com, click Trash on the left, right-click the file and click Restore. It goes back to where it was.

How long do deleted files stay in Google Drive?

Google's help says files remain in Trash for 30 days, then they're deleted forever.

Google's help says Empty trash permanently deletes the files in it. On a work or school account, an administrator may be able to recover items within 25 days, so ask them straight away.

Why can't I find my file in the Trash?

It may never have been deleted. Search by name, check you're in the right account, try is:unorganized, and look at Info and Activity in My Drive. If you don't own it, the owner may have deleted it.

Does deleting a shared file remove it for everyone?

Not if you aren't the owner. Google says you can only remove it from your own Drive and other people keep access.
