To change your background on Google Meet, click Blur or Backgrounds and effects on your self view before joining, or open Video settings during the call. Pick blur, a ready-made scene or your own image. Picking any effect turns your camera on, so be ready to be seen.
We've all seen it: a client joins a call from a kitchen with a pile of washing behind them, or a half-finished spare room, and for the next half hour you're reading their shelves instead of listening. If you work from home, a tidy backdrop is the quickest way to look prepared, and Google Meet lets you swap or blur yours in a couple of clicks.
The steps below come from Google's own Meet help page. It's written for computers, so that's where I'll spend most of the time, with a short note on phones near the end.
Changing your background before you join a Google Meet call
Setting it up in the waiting screen means nobody sees the mess, even for a second. Google's help gives two routes on a computer:
- Open Google Meet and pick your meeting, so you land on the screen with your self view.
- For a quick fix, click Blur at the bottom right of your self view.
- For more choice, click Backgrounds and effects under your video feed.
- Pick from the options that appear: touch-up appearance, a generated AI background, or ready-made backgrounds and effects.
One thing to know straight away: picking any effect turns your camera on. If you wanted to check your look with the camera off, you can't, so be ready to be seen.
Changing your Google Meet background during a call
Forgot to do it before joining? You can swap it live. On a computer, Google's help says to do this:
- At the bottom of the screen, find Video settings next to Microphone.
- Click Blur background for the one-click version.
- Or open the Backgrounds and effects panel for the full set of choices.
- When you're happy, click Close to leave the panel.
The panel has three tabs. Backgrounds is where you blur, choose a picture or add your own. Filters holds the style effects. Appearance has touch-up options such as Portrait touch-up, Studio lighting and Framing.
Using your own picture as a Google Meet background
For small businesses this is the one that matters. A plain branded image, such as your logo on a clean colour, makes every call look consistent. In the Backgrounds tab, look under the blur and personal backgrounds area and use the option to add your own background.
A few habits that keep it looking good:
- Choose a simple, uncluttered image. Busy photos make the edges around your head shimmer.
- Use a picture with a plain area where your head and shoulders will sit.
- Keep text and logos away from the edges. Google warns your video may be cropped, so parts of your background may not be visible to others.
- Stick to your own images or ones you have the right to use, rather than someone else's photography.
If your calls run long enough to become webinars, my notes on finding a webinar recording after a Zoom call are useful too, because a tidy background matters most on the calls that get replayed.
Blur or picture: which Google Meet background to choose
| Option | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Slight blur | Softens the room behind you but leaves shapes visible | A tidy home office you don't mind showing |
| Full blur | Hides detail in your surroundings | A busy room or shared space |
| Ready-made background | Replaces your room with a stock scene | A quick, neutral look |
| Your own image | Shows a picture you choose | Branded client calls |
Google adds a sensible warning here: a changed background can still reveal sensitive information visible behind you, and your self view is mirrored, though others see the correct orientation. So if a whiteboard of client names is behind you, move it, don't rely on blur.
Removing Google Meet background effects
To go back to your real room, click Turn off visual effects at the bottom right of your self view, then choose the effects to remove, or click Remove all. It's worth knowing, because effects can slow down an older laptop and use more battery. Google suggests turning them off if you notice performance problems.

If Google Meet background effects are missing or slow
Google's help lists several reasons for a missing or sluggish effect:
- Your browser needs to support what Meet uses for effects. Google lists recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari on Mac, so update yours if it's old.
- Graphics acceleration must be switched on. In Chrome that's in the System settings, followed by a restart of the browser.
- Some features, such as AI backgrounds and touch-up, are limited to certain editions.
- On a work account, your Workspace admin can control whether users can apply backgrounds and effects.
- Guests who aren't signed in to a Google Account, or who must knock to join, can change their background or effects only once during the meeting.
That last one catches clients out. If you invite someone who joins as a guest, tell them to choose their effect before they knock, because they get one go.
Changing your Google Meet background on a phone
The Google help page I used covers computers, and it notes that availability depends on your client type, account type and Workspace admin settings. Menus vary by app version, so on a phone, open the call, look for an effects or sparkle button on your self view, and choose blur or a background from there. If you can't find it, update the Meet app and check again.
If you've got a call coming up where you'll invite an AI notetaker, it's worth reading my thoughts on what AI notetakers do with your client data before you hit record.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change my background on Google Meet?
On a computer, click Blur or Backgrounds and effects on your self view before you join, or open Video settings during the call. Pick blur, a ready-made background or your own image in the Backgrounds tab.
Can I use my own image as a Google Meet background?
Yes. In the Backgrounds tab, use the option to add your own personal background. Keep the image simple and keep key content away from the edges, as your video may be cropped.
Why is the background option missing in Google Meet?
Check your browser is up to date, that graphics acceleration is on, and whether your account's edition or Workspace admin settings limit effects. Some features are only available in certain editions.
Why can I only change my effect once as a guest?
Google says participants who aren't signed in to a Google Account, or who need to knock to join, can change their background or effects only once during the meeting.
Does a background effect turn my camera on?
Yes. Google says selecting an effect turns your camera on, so be ready to be seen when you pick one.
