How to Remove the Background in CapCut (PC, Online and Phone)

To remove a background in CapCut, put the clip on the timeline, select Remove BG in the right panel and choose Auto removal. For green or blue screens use Chroma key instead. The catch: CapCut says auto removal is limited to human subjects.

A cluttered kitchen behind you, a shop shelf in the shot, a wall that doesn't match your brand: the background often lets a good video down. CapCut can take it out, leaving you or your product on a clean backdrop, a branded colour or a different scene altogether.

There isn't just one tool for it, though. CapCut has three methods, and each one suits a different kind of footage. I've taken the steps from CapCut's own guide, and I'll point out which method to reach for so you don't waste an afternoon on the wrong one.

Three ways to remove a video background in CapCut

According to its guide, CapCut offers three options, and the choice depends on what's in your clip:

  • Auto removal: a one-click cutout, best for quick results when a person is in the shot.
  • Custom removal: brush and eraser tools for when the edges are tricky and you want control.
  • Chroma key: for footage filmed against a solid colour such as green or blue.

Start with Auto removal. If the edges look rough, move to Custom removal. If you filmed against a green or blue sheet, go straight to Chroma key.

Using Auto removal to cut out a background in CapCut on a computer

On desktop, CapCut describes this route:

  1. Import your clip and drag it onto the timeline.
  2. In the right editing panel, select Remove BG.
  3. Choose Auto removal.
  4. Preview the clip to see how clean the cutout is.

CapCut's guide says this works to instantly remove human subjects with a single click, and it also says auto removal is limited to human subjects. If your video is of a product or a pet rather than a person, don't expect the one-click tool to handle it, and use Chroma key or Custom removal instead.

Tidying a CapCut cutout with Custom removal

When Auto removal leaves bits behind, or takes too much away, Custom removal gives you hands-on control. On desktop, CapCut lists three tools:

  • Smart brush: paint over the areas you want to keep.
  • Smart eraser: remove unwanted areas from the selected subject.
  • Simple eraser: erase any part freely.

Click Apply when you've finished. On the phone app, CapCut describes Custom removal as a brush for manual clean-up and detailed edits, which suits complex outlines like hair or fine details.

Using Chroma key to remove a CapCut video background

Chroma key is the method behind film-style green screens. Here's the desktop route from CapCut's guide:

  1. Select the clip on the timeline.
  2. Go to Video, then Remove BG.
  3. Choose Chroma key.
  4. Use the picker to click the background colour in your preview.
  5. Adjust the intensity, shadow, edge and clean-up edge sliders until the outline is clean.

CapCut says this suits solid green or blue backgrounds. Its FAQ adds that you can also remove a black background by selecting black as the key colour. The plainer and more evenly lit the background, the cleaner the result.

Removing a video background in CapCut online and on your phone

The other versions use shorter menus. On CapCut online, select the clip, then open Smart tools and choose Remove background. From there, pick Auto removal for a one-click cutout, or Chroma key if you filmed against a solid colour.

In the phone app, tap Edit and select Remove BG. You then choose Auto removal, where CapCut's AI finds and removes the background, Custom removal for manual clean-up, or Chroma Key, where you pick a solid colour such as green or blue with the colour selector.

Filming your clip so CapCut removes the background cleanly

The best cutouts start before you press record. A few small habits make the editing step far easier:

  • Use a plain, evenly lit background, with no shadows or creases if you're using a green or blue sheet.
  • Keep your clothing a different colour from the background so the key colour doesn't eat into you.
  • Light yourself from the front so the edges are crisp.
  • Sit a little way from the backdrop, so your shadow doesn't land on it.

Using a CapCut cutout for a small business or creator video

Once the background's gone, you've got a lot of options. Put yourself in front of a branded colour for talking-head videos, drop a product in front of a clean backdrop for a shop video, or place yourself over a screen recording to explain a tutorial.

If you're planning to post the finished clip on TikTok, it's worth reading why some TikTok effects won't work on your device. For clips going to YouTube, editing YouTube videos covers what to tidy next.

If the CapCut background remover leaves bits behind

  • Switch from Auto removal to Custom removal and use the Smart brush to paint back what you want to keep.
  • For green or blue footage, nudge the intensity and edge sliders up and down in small steps.
  • Check you're using the right method. Auto removal is limited to human subjects, according to CapCut.
  • Look for Remove BG in the right-hand panel on desktop, or tap Edit on a phone. Menus vary by app version.

If the option still won't show, CapCut's help pages are the best place to check what your version offers.
