To delete TikTok messages, open the chat, press and hold the message, tap Delete, then choose Delete for me or Delete for everyone. The catch: Delete for everyone only works within 3 minutes of sending, and after that the other person keeps their copy.
We've all sent a message we'd like back. A typo in a note to a brand you're pitching, a joke in the wrong group, a video shared with the wrong friend. TikTok gives you a short window to fix that for everyone, and a simpler option to tidy things up just for yourself.
The difference between those two options is what most guides skip over, and it matters. Below I'll take you through deleting a single message, deleting a whole chat, and clearing message requests, all following TikTok's own help centre.
Deleting a single TikTok message for everyone
If you've just sent something you regret, move fast. TikTok's help says you can remove a message for both you and the person you sent it to, but only within 3 minutes of sending it.
- Open the chat in your TikTok inbox.
- Press and hold the message you'd like to remove.
- Tap Delete.
- Tap Delete for everyone.
Once those 3 minutes are up, TikTok's help gives no way to use Delete for everyone, and you're left with the option below. Voice messages follow the same timing: TikTok says you can delete a voice message within 3 minutes of sending it.
Deleting a TikTok message just for you
This is the option for tidying up your own view. The steps start the same way:
- Open the chat in your inbox.
- Press and hold the message.
- Tap Delete.
- Tap Delete for me.
Here's the bit to remember. TikTok's help is clear that when you delete a message only for you, the receiver will still see it. So Delete for me is housekeeping, not damage control. If you're hoping to take something back after the 3-minute window, the honest answer is that you can't remove it from their side.
| Option | Who it's removed for | When you can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Delete for everyone | You and the receiver | Within 3 minutes of sending |
| Delete for me | Only you | Any time |
| Delete a chat | Only you, from your inbox list | Any time |
Deleting a whole TikTok chat from your inbox
If you'd rather clear out an entire conversation, the steps differ slightly between iPhone and Android, according to TikTok's help:
On an iPhone or iPad
- Tap Inbox at the bottom of the TikTok app.
- Swipe the chat.
- Tap Delete, then tap Confirm.
On an Android phone
- Tap Inbox at the bottom of the app.
- Press and hold the chat.
- Tap Delete.
Deleting a chat this way removes it from your inbox list. TikTok's help doesn't say it removes anything from the other person's side, so assume they still have their copy of the conversation.
Clearing TikTok message requests you don't want
Message requests are the messages from people who aren't already connected with you. They sit in a separate area and you can clear them without ever replying. TikTok's steps:
- Tap Inbox at the bottom.
- Tap Message requests, then select a chat request. Some may appear in your filtered requests.
- Tap Delete to remove it, Accept to move it into your inbox, or Report if it breaks the rules.
If you accept a request, TikTok says the person is notified in the chat, so only accept the ones you're happy to talk to.
Deleting TikTok messages vs muting, blocking or reporting
Deleting cleans up what you can see, but it doesn't stop the next message arriving. If a particular person or chat is the problem, one of these may suit you better:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Mute: swipe a chat and tap More on iOS, or press and hold it on Android, then tap Mute to stop notifications.
- Block: from the same menu, tap Block, then confirm. TikTok says a blocked person can't send you direct messages or view your videos.
- Report: press and hold a message, tap Report and follow the steps, or report the whole chat from the options at the top.
If someone is harassing or threatening you, report it to TikTok and, if you're in danger, contact the police. Take a screenshot before you delete anything you might need as a record.
Tidying TikTok messages as a creator or business
If your inbox doubles as a customer service desk, a little routine keeps it manageable. I'd clear spam message requests regularly, mute group chats that are busy but useful, and keep important customer threads rather than deleting them, because they're often the only record of what was agreed. If you've accidentally shared the wrong video publicly rather than in a DM, my guide on how to remove a repost on TikTok covers that clean-up. And if you're puzzling over videos that land in your inbox from friends, my explainer on what Shared With You means on TikTok helps.
If you can't delete a TikTok message
- More than 3 minutes have passed, so only Delete for me is showing. That's expected.
- You're on a computer. TikTok's help describes these steps in the app, so try your phone.
- Your app is out of date. Update TikTok from your app store and look again.
- You can't send or receive messages at all. TikTok says this can happen if a message has been flagged or reported or the account is temporarily suspended.
Worth knowing too: if you change your direct message setting to Don't receive, TikTok says you can still access your message history and keep chatting in existing conversations, so switching off messages isn't a way to wipe your inbox.
