How to Turn Off Read Receipts on TikTok (Read Status Setting)

To turn off read receipts on TikTok, go to Profile, tap the Menu button, choose Settings and privacy, then Privacy, then Direct messages, and switch Read status off. The catch: TikTok only shows read status when both people have it on, so turning yours off hides theirs too.

Read receipts are one of those features that feel helpful until they don't. You open a message from a client while you're queuing for coffee, you can't give a full reply yet, and now they know you've seen it. If you use TikTok to chat with customers, collaborators or friends, it's worth knowing you can switch that off.

TikTok doesn't call it read receipts, which is why people struggle to find it. In the app and in TikTok's help centre it's called Read status. Here's where it lives, what turning it off changes, and the one catch that surprises almost everyone.

Turning off TikTok read status in the app

TikTok's help article on managing direct messages gives these steps:

  1. Open the TikTok app and tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap the Menu button at the top, the three lines, then select Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Privacy.
  4. Tap Direct messages.
  5. Turn the Read status setting off.

That's it, and you can flip it back on the same way whenever you like. TikTok says that for people aged 18 and older, Read status is on by default, so if you've never touched it, it's almost certainly on right now.

The two-way rule behind TikTok read status

Here's the catch. According to TikTok's help, the other person will know when you've read their message only when both of you have read status turned on. It works like a swap: if you hide yours, you lose theirs too.

Your setting and theirsWhat TikTok's help says happens
Both switched onYou can each see when the other has read a message
Only theirs switched onThey won't know when you've read theirs, and you won't see when they've read yours
Only yours switched onNeither of you sees read status
Both switched offNeither of you sees read status

That trade-off is worth a moment's thought. If you rely on seeing whether a supplier or collaborator has opened your message, switching yours off means you'll be guessing too.

TikTok read status vs Activity Status

These two settings get mixed up all the time, and they do different jobs. Read status is about whether a message has been read. Activity Status is about whether you're online. TikTok's help article on Activity Status says it lets your mutual followers see when you're active or were last active, but only if both of you have it switched on. You must be 18 or older to use it, and it's turned off by default.

If you'd like to go fully quiet, check both. Activity Status sits under Settings and privacy, then Privacy. TikTok says it shows activity for up to 2 days, and a green dot on someone's profile picture means they're online. Turning off Read status alone won't hide that green dot.

Other TikTok direct message settings worth checking

While you're in the Direct messages menu, there are a few more controls that help you manage your inbox on your own terms:

  • Safe mode, which TikTok says is on by default and can hide messages containing sensitive content.
  • Filtered keywords, which hides messages containing words or phrases you choose.
  • Who can send you message requests, so strangers can't land in your inbox uninvited.

And if one chat is just noisy rather than a problem, you can mute it. TikTok's help says to tap the More options button at the top of the chat and turn on Mute notifications. Muting stops the alerts for that one chat and leaves the rest of your inbox untouched.

TikTok read status for creators and small businesses

If your DMs are part of how you run your business, Read status is a judgement call. Leaving it on can build trust, because people can see you've picked up their message, even if a full reply takes a while. Turning it off gives you breathing room to reply on your own schedule without anyone watching the clock.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

My suggestion: if you turn it off, make up for it with a quick holding reply when you can, something like "Got this, I'll come back to you later today." It keeps people happy without the pressure. If you're sharing a lot of videos with people over DM, my explainer on what Shared With You means on TikTok covers where those shares end up.

If you can't find TikTok's Read status setting

A few things can explain a missing toggle:

  • Age. TikTok's help says direct messaging is for account holders aged 16 and older, and Activity Status is for 18 and over, so younger accounts will see a different set of options.
  • App version. Menus move between updates, so update TikTok from your app store and look again.
  • You're on a computer. TikTok's help describes these steps in the app, so use your phone if the option isn't showing on the web.
  • You're looking in the wrong menu. It's under Privacy, then Direct messages, not under Notifications.

If none of those fix it, TikTok's in-app help is the place to report the problem, since its team can check your account directly.

What turning off TikTok read status doesn't do

It's worth being clear about the limits, so you don't rely on it for more than it offers. Turning off Read status doesn't stop someone messaging you, doesn't hide that you're online if Activity Status is on, and doesn't stop the other person seeing a reply once you send one. If someone is bothering you, blocking or reporting them is the stronger tool. If anyone is harassing or threatening you, report it to TikTok and, if you're in danger, contact the police. And if you'd like a bit of background on how the app grew into a messaging platform as well as a video one, my piece on when TikTok came out has the timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Can you turn off read receipts on TikTok?

Yes. TikTok calls it Read status. Go to Profile, the Menu button, Settings and privacy, Privacy, Direct messages, then turn Read status off.

If I turn off read status, can I still see when others read my messages?

No. TikTok says the other person will know when you've read their message only when both of you have read status turned on, so turning yours off hides theirs too.

Is TikTok read status on by default?

TikTok's help says it's on by default for people aged 18 and older.

Does turning off read status hide when I'm online?

No. That's a separate setting called Activity Status, found under Settings and privacy, then Privacy.

Does the other person get told when I turn off read status?

TikTok's help doesn't mention any notification. They'll simply stop seeing a read status on chats with you.
