To delete a post on Instagram, open the post, tap the three-dot Options icon above it, tap Delete and confirm. It moves to Recently Deleted, where you can restore it from the app for 30 days. If you only want it hidden, archive it instead to keep its likes and comments.
We've all posted something on Instagram and winced a minute later: a typo in the caption, the wrong photo, an offer that's ended, or a picture you're simply not keen on any more. Deleting a feed post takes three taps. The more useful question is whether you should delete it at all, or archive it instead, and what happens to it afterwards.
This guide covers deleting a single feed post on your phone and on a computer, clearing out several posts at once, the Recently Deleted safety net, and when archiving is the smarter move for a business or creator account. I've based the steps on Instagram's help articles. Stories have their own process, so this page sticks to posts on your profile grid.
How to delete a post on Instagram from your phone
Instagram's help centre says you can delete posts you've shared at any time. On the iPhone or Android app:
- Go to your profile and open the post you want to remove.
- Tap the three-dot Options icon above the post.
- Tap Delete.
- Tap Delete again to confirm.
That's it. The post disappears from your profile and from your followers' feeds straight away.
How to delete an Instagram post on a computer
You can do the same thing from a web browser. Instagram's help article gives these steps for computers:
- Open the post on your profile.
- Click the Options icon above the post.
- Click Delete.
- Click Delete again to confirm.
Restoring a deleted post is a different story on a computer, though, as you'll see below. If you think you might change your mind, it's safer to delete from the app.
Deleting several Instagram posts at once
Having a clear-out? Instagram lets you select a batch of posts and remove them together. On your phone:
- Go to your profile and tap the Menu icon in the top right.
- Under How you use Instagram, tap Your activity.
- Under Content you shared, tap Posts.
- Tap Select in the top right, then tap the circle on each post you want to remove.
- Tap Delete at the bottom, then tap Delete again to confirm.
Instagram's help notes two handy filters on that screen: you can sort posts from newest to oldest, or tap All dates to narrow things down to a date range. That makes it much easier to find old campaign posts from a particular season.
What happens after you delete a post on Instagram
Here's the reassuring part. According to Instagram's article What happens to content you delete on Instagram, deleted items are removed from your account immediately and moved to Recently Deleted. They stay there for 30 days, and after that they're permanently deleted automatically.
Instagram adds that the full deletion process can take up to 90 days after it starts, and that copies may remain after that in backup storage it uses to recover from things like software errors. Meta may also keep some information for reasons such as legal issues or preventing harm, as set out in its Privacy Policy.
Restoring a deleted Instagram post from Recently Deleted
Changed your mind within 30 days? Instagram's recovery article says you can restore posts from the app, as long as you're using the latest version:
- Go to your profile and tap the menu icon in the top right.
- Under How you use Instagram, tap Your activity.
- Under Removed and archived content, tap Recently deleted.
- Choose Posts at the top, then tap the post.
- Tap Options, then Restore, then Restore again.
Instagram says this feature isn't available on computers, so you'll need the phone app. If you can't see Recently deleted, you may not have deleted anything lately, or the item may be older than the 30-day window.

Archive instead of deleting an Instagram post
Before you delete, ask yourself whether you just want the post out of sight. Instagram's archive feature hides a post from your profile, so your followers and other people on Instagram can't see it, but the post keeps all its likes and comments. You can bring it back whenever you like, with no 30-day deadline.
- Open the post on your profile.
- Tap the Options icon in the top right.
- Tap Archive.
| Delete | Archive | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can see it | Nobody | Only you |
| Likes and comments | Removed with the post | Kept |
| Can you bring it back? | Within 30 days, from the app | Any time |
| Best when | You want it gone for good | You might want it later |
Deleting Instagram posts on a business or creator account
For small businesses, I'd lean towards archiving far more often than deleting. An old post might still carry useful comments from customers, and its insights tell you what your audience responded to. Before you remove anything, check how it performed, and my guide to reading your Instagram dashboard numbers shows you what to look at.
Delete when a post is wrong, out of date in a way that could mislead people, or something you'd never want back. Archive when it's simply off-brand for where your account is heading. And if you're thinking of stepping away from Instagram completely, that's a different job: I've covered it in my guide on deactivating your Instagram account.
If you can't delete a post on Instagram
- It isn't your post. You can only delete posts you shared. If you're tagged in someone else's post, you can remove your tag or hide it from your profile instead.
- You're looking at a Story or a Reel. Those have their own options, and Reels appear under their own tab in Your activity.
- Your app is out of date. Update Instagram, then try again, as menus can vary by app version.
- You're trying to restore on a computer. Recently deleted only works in the phone app.
